Gerry Rafferty - The Royal Mile Lyrics

I remember the sound of the passing train
As it rolled through the night in the pouring rain
And the touch of a hand and the way she said: 'Goodbye'.

And we walked in the sun down the royal mile
Saw the light in her eye and the way she smiled
And she cried in the night and I heard her say: 'Don't go'.

What can I do, sweet darlin'? I don't want to go away
Looking at you, sweet darlin', I know I want to stay
What can I do, sweet darlin'?

And the light of the day I was rolling home
I was thinking of you waiting on your own
And I wanted to call but they sudden said: 'Oh no'.

Yeah, but now it's a dream, it's a memory
But I'll never forget what you gave to me
I was lost and alone but you made feel OK.

What can I do, sweet darlin'? I don't want to go away
Looking at you, sweet darlin', I know I want to stay
What can I do, sweet darlin'?

I remember the sound of the passing train
As it rolled through the night in the pouring rain
And the touch of a hand and the way she said: 'Goodbye'.

What can I do, sweet darlin'? I don't want to go away
Looking at you, sweet darlin', I know I want to stay
What can I do, sweet darlin'?

I know we all have different taste in music. but I cannot understand how some people say they don't like Gerry Rafferty. What's to not like his voice is sublime and his music pure . sadly missed but never forgotten and still listened to.

I haven’t heard this song in years, hearing it now is like hearing it with fresh ears. Such evocative lyrics, my imagination throws up vivid images to match. Then there’s that very Scottish sound. Brilliant, just brilliant. Sad to have lost this great talent, you just don’t see it in today’s music.

Timeless. leaving you wanting more. One harmonious song after another.

  19. S.... S....

    beautiful

  20. s.... ....

I never remember the title.... because the refrain, 'What can I do Sweet Darlin...' is so evocative of... well, things other than the Royal Mile - Thank all the gods that no-one can pretend to be anything like as magical as Gerry Rafferty - even his name has a song in it.

  21. D.... B....

    I love this bloody song

  22. P.... M....

    a jewel of a song

  23. S.... P....

Gerry Rafferty ebbe un grandissimo successo anche in Italia:questa è una delle sue canzoni che amo ascoltare spesso.Grande Gerry!!!!

  24. N.... I....

I love the sound of Gerry's sweet voice.

  25. L.... ....

There was a cover band in the UK that used to play this .. they performed at Clydebank, I wish I had their version .. so awesome.  At least I think they were awesome.. (vodka night).

  26. N.... ....

This is such an amazing song.

  27. J.... J....

Cant help but wonder, would the late, great Gerry have been a Yes man or a No man.

Personally, I think as much as he was a proud Scot, no more than I'm a proud Irishman (Northern), but do believe the UK is the UK and something worth keeping together.

To those who wanted Independence please, please think long and hard about it. Look at the mess we're in over here Its a SAD SAD joke.. Its a disaster here and believe me if that little egotistical man Salmond had his way, you, my Scottish cousins, would all be in as big a mess as we are here in 5 years or so.

I love Scotland and detest the Westminster elite. As much as I love our wee country, we are better off together!!!

    Sláinte

    J.... J....

    numan yes ?

    J.... J....

John, piss off. No voters are traitors. Not just to Scotland, but to decency, to morality, to ethics. Cowards the lot of them.

    J.... J....

He would have been VERY much a Yes man.

    J.... J....

You mean like his mate Billy Connolly and other catholic Glaswegians George Galloway &Alan Brazil ?

    J.... J....

Agree with that Alan, but just look at the person below who professes to be SCOTTISH, MR Telstar who is not Scottish but A BRIT NAT who would like to be independent from the rest of Europe ....bring on the british empire ...or what is left of it

  28. j.... o....

    Better than being there..thanks!!

  29. I.... B....

Scotland - the brave / Scotland - home, sweet home!

  30. D.... M....

SaWeet.  Some folks have the gift.....

    D.... M....

  31. J.... C....

Thanks for the video. I love the slideshow of Edinburgh. I got to visit several years. I've always loved Gerry Rafferty's music and singing, and was saddened, to be putting it mildly, when he passed away a few years ago.

  32. T.... S....

This man was one hell of an artist. Respect Gerry Rip top man.

  37. T.... ....

Hav'nt listened to this for a wee while, just wonderful Gerry Rafferty. Missing you still xx

  38. w.... ....

so effortless, in the vocals, yet so effective

  39. C.... ....

Yes he topped the US charts with "City to city"! Amazing that a Scottish folk singer could get to the top of the US charts back then!! I still do not understand how that could happen!

  40. D.... G....

    Touch of class.

  41. c.... ....

There are those few of us who remember songs such as this with great affection. These songs take us back to highschool or a time thereabouts. It is a crying shame that I have not heard this on Atlanta area radio in over thirty years. What has happened to this great music? Thanks to youtube and its posters, I can find everything in my (seemingly) unbounded memory.

  42. P.... W....

This song needs to be played while watching a Deltic taking the Flying Scotsman

  43. r.... ....

Fair point. I should really keep my gob shut sometimes. You're right, it's a great song.

  44. T.... ....

What does your comment have to do with the brilliance that is Gerry Rafferty? He just sang a wonderful song, what's your issue? XX

  45. b.... c....

    @TheBettyboo62
by gerry's own admission, although born in paisley, all his family and get togethers etc, were irish orientated, could be described as, scots/irish

    b.... c....

bob change all these cultural influences together with his special gentle personality has made Gerry Rafferty one of the greatest musician / song writers ...

    b.... c....

Despite what you say, he was 100% Scottish. I also have some Irish ancestors but am totally Scots.

  46. T.... ....

He was a Paisley Man, but still able to "laud" Edinburgh. An well done him!

  47. S.... N....

    @Saxonsilver BOLLOCKS

  48. r.... ....

@scotsexile1 The Scottish troops in the British Army are no more mercenary than their English, Welsh, other Commonwealth and Irish (from North & South) counterparts.

  49. J.... H....

Gerry Rafferty was a TOTAL ! Original, and one of the greatest artist that ever came out of
    Scotland.

  50. S.... S....

@Seattlecarnut it cant be easy with all the pressures involved in a musicians life so people deal with things their way...maybe not to our liking

  51. G.... D....

I'm a divorced father. When I got divorced, I managed to obtain whole custody of my son. When I played this song on the stereo, I remember my little 3-year-old boy sitting on the stairs and singing "The Royal Mile" along with me... What a nice memory! Now the boy is a great musician..!

  52. P.... W....

Lived in Edinburgh for 20 years, and this song reminds me so much of the city.
Met Gerry and Billy Connolly (humblebums) at the Burnside Hotel Rutherglen in 1969 (poss 1970) - what a night. First saw Billy at the Rockfield hotel Paisley 1967 ish. Happy Days.
    Best Wishes Robin Topping

  70. Z.... H....

Gerry apparently wasn't fond of playing live, just like Steely Dan(although they did finally reunite in the 90s to do their first live shows since 1973 or so)

  71. f.... g....

My favorite walk is the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. This song takes me there. It's the best!

  72. i.... ....
