This is obviously great and had I never heard Daryle Singletary I may feel like this is better than I feel like it is. After playing this I went and played a live version of Daryle and now there is no doubt in my mind that there was not a finer version of this than by Singletary. Of course Paycheck was incredible. The studio version of Daryle featuring Paycheck's recitation from the hospital bed is by far the greatest version ever recorded. This was the last song Paycheck sang AND the last song Singletary sang.

The only two people who could ever do that song justice was the late great Johnny Paycheck and the late great Darryl Singletary. George's version is ok but but doesn't have the emotion .

I love George but Johnny Paychecks version has been my favorite since I can remember, you can just hear the pain and he has that longing twang in his voice that is more high pitch than George’s and it just works, can’t explain it but Paychecks version will bring me to tears almost every time.

I have been listening to Strait for over 15 yrs. I can't help but wonder with this song, is this his goodbye song? Is this it for him as far as albums?

No, still has two more on contract with MCA and he has been playing this song on stage for a couple of years. He was a Paycheck fan so he covered it and put it on this album.

Nobody can beat the hurt in Paychecks voice when he sang this but George sure does come close. It’s great to see classics like this brought back to life and able to be enjoyed by another generation. Also love the violin/fiddle in this version.
