George Strait - Old Violin Lyrics

I can't recall one time in my life
I've felt as lonely as I do tonight
I feel like I could lay down and get up no more
It's the damndest feeling, I never felt it before

Tonight I feel like an old violin
Soon to be put away and never played again

Don't ask me why I feel like this, hell, I can't say
I only wish this feeling would just go away
I guess it's 'cause the truth is the hardest thing I've ever faced
'Cause you can't change the truth in the slightest way
I've tried

So I asked myself, I said "George, where in the hell do you go from here?"
Then like a fool, I turned around and I looked in the mirror

And there I was seeing an old violin
Soon to be put away and never played again

So one more time, just to be sure
I said "George, where you gonna go from here?"
And you know, there wasn't a nickel's worth of difference
When I looked into the mirror

'Cause there I was seeing an old violin
Soon to be put away and never played again

And just like that, it hit me why that old violin and I were just alike
We give our all to music, and soon we'll give our life
Precious memories, how they linger

A great rendition of Johnny Paychecks song. My deceased brother loved this song. So, of course it's special to me. Keep blessing us with real country music. Thanks for all the great entertaining Troubador.

  10. E.... T....

George Strait=Pure Country Music. Keep it going George so the young "sangers" (as Porter Wagoner would say) know which path to take when they come to the fork in the road and choose Pure Country as opposed to the watered down pop version. God bless you George.

  11. M.... N....

  21. P.... C....

I love the old style of country music with George and rest of them..George is the king of county music of any age.

  22. P.... L....

Boy you ain't done yet. Get them thoughts outta your head; we got work to do, now let's go!

    P.... L....

Amen to that George is still young 67 yr old man look at Willie Nelson 86 and still making Beautiful music

  23. j.... ....

This is obviously great and had I never heard Daryle Singletary I may feel like this is better than I feel like it is. After playing this I went and played a live version of Daryle and now there is no doubt in my mind that there was not a finer version of this than by Singletary. Of course Paycheck was incredible. The studio version of Daryle featuring Paycheck's recitation from the hospital bed is by far the greatest version ever recorded. This was the last song Paycheck sang AND the last song Singletary sang.

    j.... ....

jdmyerscountry, yes Daryle did this song extreme justice...👍

  24. C.... M....

This man is a real Texan

  25. C.... R....

Don't worry, George. I'll be playing your music long after you're gone. I'll raise my kids right and teach them to respect the King's music.

  29. W.... Y....

Ty you Will love this CD ❤️

  30. K.... B....

Aye bring that "old violin" my way 😉 I'll play it anytime

  31. A.... W....

The only two people who could ever do that song justice was the late great Johnny Paycheck and the late great Darryl Singletary. George's version is ok but but doesn't have the emotion .

  32. G.... h....

Sorry George, but Paycheck takes this one hands down.

    G.... h....

...and Singletary is right there too. Both of those men died with Old Violin being the last song they sang.

    G.... h....

@jdmyerscountry Old Violin is definitely Johnny Paycheck's song, but Daryle Singletary did an awesome as well. Not much to say about George Strait except everything he sings is pure country.

  33. A.... L....

This is what country is. This is it. When the words tell a story and the instruments just somehow magically supports the message.

  34. J.... E....

I love George. He's the best ever. I'd also recommend you check out Daryle Singletary's cover of this!

  35. N.... N....

love this song, but i like johnny paycheck singing this better....

  36. v.... E....

  65. F.... ....

I’ve been waiting a while for this album to drop and then I see this song that he put on there. It’s so amazing and sad at the same time. It’s like he’s using it as a farewell song. I don’t want to think of a world without King George.

  66. D.... F....

    Hellz yeah

  67. b.... ....

    Johnny Paycheck..would be Proud..

  70. B.... B....

The king of country music George Strait you did a great job on old violin! Johnny Paycheck has got to be smiling in Heaven!!!!!!!

  71. P.... ....

The guitar sounds like who'll stop the rain by ccr

  72. K.... G....

I love George but Johnny Paychecks version has been my favorite since I can remember, you can just hear the pain and he has that longing twang in his voice that is more high pitch than George’s and it just works, can’t explain it but Paychecks version will bring me to tears almost every time.

    K.... G....

Krista Garner go listen the Singletary do it

  73. H.... i....

I am 13, and love all this old school classical country, and hate the new shitty stuff. Thanks from Straya.

    H.... i....

aint no school, like old school kid.

  74. J.... F....

Is it just me or does this new album have some autotune? His voice just doesn't sound the same.

    J.... F....

    J Fisch just you

  75. M.... M....

No one sings this song better than daryle singletary. RIP

    M.... M....

    I totally agree

  76. N.... t....

    Some damn good country music.

  77. M.... R....

Such a classic version of a classic song. Very tasteful. Nice touch in adding "Precious Memories" to the outro. Hats off to you, Mr. Strait. Well done. God bless!

  78. J.... D....

That is a horrible version. He needs to just let Paycheck's version be left alone.

  79. E.... W....

Thank You George! There is a reason why your the King, and once again you have proven it. Thank you for real country music.

  80. r.... h....

My copy's in the mail, can't wait to hear it all. You're great, Mr. Strait!

  81. R.... B....

I have been listening to Strait for over 15 yrs. I can't help but wonder with this song, is this his goodbye song? Is this it for him as far as albums?

    R.... B....

No, still has two more on contract with MCA and he has been playing this song on stage for a couple of years. He was a Paycheck fan so he covered it and put it on this album.

    R.... B....

This was the great Johnny Paycheck’s swan song. King George did the song right.

  82. M.... H....

It's a shame no one even knows what real country music is now I'm only 17 and hate this new stuff. I wish George strait could keep playing my whole life he is by far my favorite country singer and wish I could meet him someday.

    M.... H....

Dirty Brown don’t worry, they’re everywhere on every video, just your casual troll

    M.... H....

Hey I'm 17 and i love old country music my favorite is Keith Whitley he is the best

    M.... H....

I agree I think this new music is not good not even country it's good to see young people liking old country music ism 49 my self I love George strait and George Jones

    M.... H....

@countrygirl countrymusiclover I know this is an old comment, but I don't care. If you think new country is the same or just as good as old country, you don't deserve to listen to old country. That's all there is to it. Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Sr and Jr, etc. There's no new artists nearly as good as them

    M.... H....

    Micheal Henderson. 22 here

  83. J.... D....

George, congratulations on your Brand New album out today. My buddy Tim told me about it. I was so surprised.

  84. K.... N....

Thank ya, sir. Hope ya ain't feelin' like an old violin. We are, and we can't change the truth. LOVE ya 🎼💙🎼 I didn't recognize this, but it doesn't matter cause you made it yours, Troubadour. You made me cry. 💞

  85. D.... A....

    This is just beautiful.....real country.

  86. d.... c....

It’s nice that the king of country music brings back someone of the ole school country greats

  87. D.... W....

Nobody can beat the hurt in Paychecks voice when he sang this but George sure does come close. It’s great to see classics like this brought back to life and able to be enjoyed by another generation. Also love the violin/fiddle in this version.

    D.... W....

    Daryl Singletary did it best

    D.... W....

pissed me off. i cant even listen to this one it sucks

    D.... W....

Ian Hernandez I think u need hearing aids. this version sucks

    D.... W....

    Tracy Burt Sr. thank u

    D.... W....

Chris Stitt more balls than you'll ever have
