Gentry, Bobbie - Parchman Farm Lyrics

My man's over there on Parchman farm
Sittin' there on Parchman farm
My man's sittin' there on Parchman farm
He ain't never done nobody no harm

Puttin' that cotton in eleven foot sack
Puttin' that cotton in eleven foot sack
Puttin' that cotton in eleven foot sack
With a twelve gauge shotgun at his back

He's sittin' over there on number nine
Sittin' over there on number nine
Sittin' over there on number nine
And all he ever did was drink his wine

Well, he's gonna be there for the rest of his life
He's gonna be there for the rest of his life
Well, he's gonna be there for the rest of his life
And all he ever did was shoot his wife

Don't confuse Bukka White's 1940 "Parchman Farm Blues" with this one, which is based on Mose Allison's 1957 original. At best this version was inspired by White's, but really they don't share much other than the title subject.

Parchman Farm is a song that was recorded by the famous Lomax father son duo who traveled the nation recording folk music before it was gone- The actual recording was performed by a chain gang using shovels and pick axes. Of course, Bobbie's version killed it, but my fave is the Johnny Winter version -

I totally agree with you about Johnny's version, but you're right, Bobbie's is killer!

I like Mose Allison's version also. From Tippo, Mississippi. RIP.
