Gentry, Bobbie - Apartment 21 Lyrics

Rain on my Sunday shoes
Pick up the daily news
Looks like tomorrows blues
But its better than none

Call on the telephone
Knowin' that he's not home
I'll put on the Rollin' Stones
And I can have me some fun

Start up a flight of stairs
Stand up and comb your hair
Try not to change things
More than you can withstand

Get into something new
That's made for a year or two
Pick up the pieces
Where you think they might land

Everyday goes
Another days gone
Hate to say so but I'm getting older
Day by day

Take off all your clothes
Stand up and wipe your nose
Cry for your daddy
Who died so long ago

Jump on another plane
Today it's all the same
You can catch me in Boston
'Cause that's how it goes

I'm here in apartment 21
Stop by and have some fun
Say how ya doin', ya old son of a gun

Look at a photograph
Lord, don't it make you laugh
For all these changes
What have you done?

La la la...

Sit down and write a song
Wait till the days grow long
And wait fir the autumn wind
To blow me away

La la la...

Quite possibly the absolute very best pop confection ever recorded in the history of music....

    Um, ..Mariah? Ha.

The description could not have been better written..... I bet u & I are thinking of the exact same person u are describing. It still makes me furious that Capitol Records was so greedy that they refused to properly promote certain ppl b/c basically if THEY couldn’t have almost all the $$$ then the artist’s work wouldn’t get promoted. Those artists who were smart enough to make sure their contract(s) were lucrative enough to make them a decent dollar, simply were “punished” by basically getting no/very little press. How sad.

Anita Carter! Same year! Fortunately, she started at three and by twenty-five, already had a large body of work, on RCA and Columbia and Cadence.

You might find this interesting: a 24/7 station of many "turntable hits." In fact, there, it's always "Fifty-Three Years Ago Today" and Number One this week is Nancy Ames' "Friends and Lovers Forever." The URL is

    mms://73.171.208.145:1640

and it's in HQ and first gen from vinyl where possible. On a Windows machine, just paste it into your address line or WMPlayer. For others, use VLC.

Her brother was Buddy Holly. He was Michael Rockefellar. He disappeared in a plane crash.
    They played the poor narrative.
    So what?!
She was taken out by hippies on May 5 1969. They celebrated the day Cinco de Mayo in Aug at her daughters farm in Bethel NY.
She IS the one they say "bought the farm".

    This woman is bad !
    I dont like country...but I love her...
is she considered one of very best ?

    K.... K....

She SHOULD be considered one of the best as she was a trendsetter in her field.

  9. S.... M....

    so in love with bobbie.

  10. R.... L....

Love this song and Bobbie Gentry....she is from my home state of Mississippi.

  11. D.... ....

I remember this song playing on the radio at about 9:00AM Sept. 19, 1970. It is the only song I remember that day. It is the only song whose date I can remember hearing on given date. I got married that day to a woman that somewhat resembled Bobby Gentry. After 45 years I am still married to that same lovely lady. The song and the marriage are still great after all these years

    D.... ....

+DrinkingStar  What a great story! I'm from Mississippi and love Bobbie Gentry. Wishing you and your wife many move years of Happy Marriage!

    D.... ....

    Beautiful story! Blessings!!

    D.... ....

Another gem of a song I don't remember from back then. But, wow, the beginning of this song and Bobbie's voice pull me in right away. And your story is wonderful -- great things last and last!

    D.... ....

+ u call yourself 'Drinking Star'. She must be some lady. Cheers.

  12. V.... S....

sexiest overbite in history. what a gorgeous woman and incredibly talented.

  13. e.... ....

Any Wonder why I love this   song??

  14. P.... P....

I love this song. I bought this in 69/70? Rarely ever hear it played on the radio. Lovely memories, thanx.

  15. B.... K....

I can't remember when I bought this record. It has long been a favourite of mine. In the mid 80s Nick Booth played it on 2SER in Sydney. I wrote to him saying it was the first and only time I had heard it on radio. He then played the original John Wilkin version. Does anyone have this to upload?

  16. M.... G....

I remember listening to this song on the way to summer school in 1970.Hudson & Herrigan (KILT in Houston) played it just about every morning and I loved it. It is still a good song.

    M.... G....

I remember Hudson and Harrigan. KILT had some of the greatest jocks ever

  17. j.... ....

Great singer, lovely lady, talented songwriter. In many ways, she was ahead of her time. The term "crossover" had not been used yet, and country artists stayed country artists. If she had debuted in the 70s, I bet she would have been up there with Carole King and Dolly Parton.

    j.... ....

I’ve pointed out in several posts similar thoughts. Back then only Patsy Cline and Elvis basically were crossovers. Bobby Gentry was a pioneer in that type genre. Making crossover acceptable to the every day artists. Sadly back then, as you pointed out in your combat, people tended to either Lake country, or like pop, or whatever. Rather than help her career, for lack of better words it kind of hurt her career, And that her music could not find a home on the radio

  18. D.... S....

    Beautiful story, great record.

  19. j.... ....

Bobbie had it all..Jim Stafford & Glen Campbell were lucky dudes

  20. r.... ....

Loved Bobbie. Loved This Song. Ran out and bought the single the first time I heard it. Still have the single. I covet it. Wish I'd had the money as a kid to buy the LP. She did some awesome work.

  21. L.... C....

You gentleman speak with great wisdom and first hand knowledge...Enjoy reading your comments. How accurate you are. This lady is a most gifted and tallented performer. With her direct hands on contribution to these songs makes her quite unique in itself. What a string of hits to show for it. .What a beautiful woman as well..Any quality female singer would do well to cover this tune!!

  22. D.... M....

maybe the money made them happy

  23. m.... ....

Actually, it was Rick Hall...and no one produced Rick Hall sessions except Rick Hall. That's one very good reason why we paid special attention to this album. There were three Southern legends who fell into the "anything they do is worth checking out" category...Rick Hall, Chips Moman and Bill Lowery. Each has placed several records in my all time Top 100...records which, no matter how hard we pushed, never became huge hits. Each also scored many huge hits with more-mainstream product.

    m.... ....

mugwump790 very very true, indeed. They were a special trio. It was a special time to be coming of age in America as well.

  24. m.... ....

    Albeit involuntary...

  25. s.... ....

    The best existentialist single ever.

    s.... ....

sigh57 Great record but WHY do you say existentialist?

  26. s.... ....

@mugwump790 Isn't it amazing that someone can make such a difference in someone's life. I wish I had her talent. Cut another record Girl.

  27. D.... M....

The reason this song was never huge as you say, is because Bobby was a country girl with morals and talent. America doesn't want that, they want tit's and ass, to be blunt. Just read the comments on some of these videos. Not just Bobby's, try other women of this era and you learn just how much people didn't get it. That's the way the bankers set the system up.

    D.... M....

Excellent comment. Very direct, but true! Well said. Hats off to u. 😃

  28. m.... ....

Excellent comment, thank you! My first (very vivid) memory of Apartment 21 was driving home from a radio transmitter just as the sun came up one Sunday about that same time of 1970. I'd been working all night, including a 150 mile drive to a fire-gutted transmitter across the state for an emergency parts scavenge to fix my transmitter. That station played the record and I listened. When I punched to another of my stations 50 miles away, they also played it. Got my first copy that day.

    m.... ....

I find that very amazing. Apartment 21 was not that big of a hit. If you would’ve said oh to Billy Joe or fancy, I would not find that odd. But what a wild coincidence. No wonder you remember it

  29. N.... P....

she is perfect, country music is not sung this way anymore....but she completely disappeared...she won't come out and sing her old songs....one of the most beautiful women of all time...where is she? did she fall to drugs? get fat?...who knows.....she needs to reach out to her fans, she is a recluse now....why?

  30. w.... ....

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

  31. B.... B....

I've got all Bobbies albums! I fell in love with her when I was 13, the first time heard Ode. My favorite was when I saw her perform tiny weeny yellow poka dot bikini on Tv and she wore one! Boy was that a sight for a kid!

  32. e.... ....

I still have the 45 of this single Bobbie sent me in the mail. I was a member of her fan club then. Brings back such golden memories.

  33. U.... ....

The more of Bobbie's music I hear the more I love her! I never knew she was so successful but she should have been bigger.

  34. i.... ....

Bobbie Gentry will always be one of the most gifted and beautiful female artist of my generation.

  35. c.... ....

Wow! I have loved this song ever since it was first released on the radio more than 40 years ago. I finally found it a few years ago on CD. Too bad it has been overlooked and forgotten for all these years. Bobbie's work was so good!

  36. u.... ....

Thanks! I wish "Fancy" was in print. The first time I heard Lily Allen's "Who'd Have Known" it totally reminded me of this song.

  37. w.... ....

Dwayne, I agree with everything you say here. Just one thing(I imagine you know what I'm about to say). Joni Mitchell really had a golden voice- it never was squeaky, though I can can appreciate that it could be very, very high. But check her out again. Court and Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns and middle period work has less of the high, high vocals.
    Anyway, thanks for mentioning Melanie.

  38. d.... ....

Bobbie has been overlooked for decades - it is nice to see her getting the acclaim and respect taht she deserves. I never really liked Joni Mitchell and her high high squeaky voice - but she did write some good music. The greatest singer songwriter (female) of all time is Melanie - and at 62 she is still going strong with a world tour and has never stopped sharing her craft with the world. One thing that bonds all of these "greats" together is the pure love of their craft, chart toppers or not

  39. a.... r....

    awesome.

  40. m.... ....

My pleasure! Every now and then I come across one of these true lost classics that no one has honored yet.

Bobbie, as always, is breathtaking. Lyrics, music, looks, talent and choice of producers.

  41. B.... ....

a great tribute to Bobbie! Thanks for posting it.

  42. w.... ....

They just don't make women this good anymore!
