Genesis - Visions Of Angels Lyrics

Standing in a forest gazing at the sun
looking at the trees but there's not even one
See a rippling stream that smiles and then goes by
run to feel its comfort but the water's dry.

I see her face and run to take her hand
Whey she's never there I don't understand
The trumpets sound my whole world crumbles down

Visions of angels all around
dance in the sky
Leaving me here
forever goodbye.

As the leaves will crumble so will fall my love
for the fragile beauty of our lives must fade
Though I once remember echoes of my youth
now I sense no past, no love that ends in love

Take this dream the stars have filled with light
As the blossom glides like snowflakes from the trees
In vengeance to a god no-one can reach.

Visions of angels all around
dance in the sky
Leaving me here
forever goodbye.

Ice is moving and world's begun to freeze
see the sunlight stopped and deadened by the breeze
Minds are empty bodies move insensitive
some believe that when they die they really live

I believe there never is an end
God gave up this world its people long ago
Why she's never there I still don't understand

Visions of angels all around
dance in the sky
Leaving me here
forever goodbye.

Visions of angels all around
dance in the sky
Leaving me here
forever goodbye.

Wow what can I say bout this masterpiece nothing speaks volumes. Mr. Gabriel is definitely my musical hero as I once again his sublime lyrics and musical talents. Mr. Philips adds a who dimension to the grandness.

    M.... T....

I'm glad of what you wrote.
The best thing about Genesis is that I still discover songs, literally and in the meanings of the lyrics (I'm french so it's maybe why).
I'm not the kind to listen an album from start to end, but with the Lamb I learned I should do it more often.
Anyway, just that "some thinks when they die they really live" is really strong.

  11. s.... b....

Last single with Peter singing it... what a band setup they had. One of top 10 prog bands of all times.

It wasn't the last... For one, there's I Know What I Like from 1973's Selling England

I like the organ on this song. Especially on the music breaks.

Some of the songs on the Archive set show the evolution from the debut to Trespass: "Shepherd", "Pacidy", "Let Us Now Make Love" (which was almost released as a single) - also, I believe, "Visions of Angels" is indeed a bit older than the other Trespass songs. It was composed mainly by Anthony Phillips, whose 12-string guitar playing was influential to the early folksy Genesis sound. The girl the lyric refers to is actually Peter Gabriel's later wife Jill; Ant was in love with her, and Peter, it is said, didn't know about Ant's feelings, so he didn't have a clue about the true meaning of the lyric when he sang it.

Jason Barbush ..... the other day while in my car I heard this song played on college radio and I flashed back to when I was 15 and in love with a young man in 1991 so I looked up this song on YouTube and I saw your name .. Wow remember when you used to sing this to me ... I hope i didnt cross any boundaries by posting nor do i want to rehash anything that would cause trouble... just a message to say. ... hi and I am ok ... 40. d.... g....

  42. l.... t....

I liked all of Genesis, Phil and Peter, in fact I may prefer the Phil stuff. That said, this song, and the album it comes from (Trespass), are just great. I particularly like "Looking For Someone," this one and of course "The Knife." And yes, as much as I love Phil Collins' drumming, I thought John Mayhew did very well here, especially in "Looking for Someone" and "The Knife." I think you mainly can tell a difference in the closing section of "Stagnation," here vs the same section in their 1992 "Old Medley" performance, Chester Thompson brings more adventure to it.

  43. a.... ....

So much beauty in only one song

  44. J.... L....

    Disco fantástico...

  45. K.... P....

    This is before Collins.

  46. E.... M....

    superb.........

  47. P.... C....

When I hear their first album I think of Bee Gees, another "pastoral" group at this time.

  48. J.... M....

Genesis just IS, they are, will always be, the centre of the Universe for me.

Since 1970 I have traveled with them on a musical journey that still continues today 43 years later, I have their Albums on Vinyl , Tape, CD and now mp3 I will take them with me when I die.

  50. D.... S....

This song was going through my head, yesterday. Brought a sense of calm that I needed. Love early Genesis.

  51. L.... I....

    WOW!!!!

  52. y.... ....

I doubt anyone will care if you give up mattydigs. Doesn't mean you have bad taste - or that Genesis fans do. Just means it isn't your cup of tea. Personally, I think maybe it helped quite a bit if you were around when this came out. Then you could better appreciate the creativity and the difference between this and all the other things that were being done by other bands.(a lot of it was CRAP.)

  53. A.... S....

    so young but so inspired...

  54. M.... ....

@thuleproject I did listen to both of those. I found them to be way too 'dainty' for my tastes. Not incredibly adventurous either, kinda boring for me. I mean it's good but nothing I heard was something I hadn't already heard done better. I'll place my prog money on Yes or King Crimson.

    M.... ....

Camel and dream theater are better then yes and king crimson. Genesis is a class of it's own

  55. J.... S....

    @EuchridEucrow1 Agreed.

  56. M.... ....

I just went through the entire early Yes catalog and while I didn't like half of it , the other half was pretty awesome to me. I'm doing the same thing now with Genesis and I must say I am just unimpressed and bored with them. I started with trick of the tail and I'm listening to Wind & Wuthering now. If this album doesn't impress me I give up.

    M.... ....

Yeah I didn't like them too much either at first listen, like you I found them kind of dull...Rush were my introduction to prog rock and I guess I was expecting something more hard-rock-ish along those lines...the thing that really changed my opinion of them was seeing the Musical Box tribute band do a recreation of early 70s Genesis live shows. Now Genesis is one of my favorites.

  57. B.... A....

Another beautiful song from the original Genesis.:) I believe this was composed by Phillips.

    B.... A....

    Yes, it was.

  58. T.... ....

@icardimax Yes I knew it... But I just noticed and checked the most important members. Anyway, John Mayhew, with all the respect I give to him, did not bring anything, as Collins brought so much for the band ...
    Yes, Timeless music !

  59. M.... I....

@DuketheFish73 You are right, for everything, except for the drums: in Trespass the drummer was John Mayhew, not Phil Collins. Phil Has come later before Nursery crime album. Just a point out from a Genesis fan... for the rest you are right, is Timeless music.

  60. E.... E....

I always thought John Mayhew's drumming on this album was very underrated.

    E.... E....

    Me too.

    E.... E....

    Agreed!

    E.... E....

It's not bad but all his fills sound pretty much the same. He was sort of the Genesis equivalent of John Rutsey.

  61. b.... ....

this album gets so overlooked its a fucking shame!!!!! a lot of tribute bands and fans only seem to know the knife and stagnation (maybe). this whole lp rules so much for 41 years and its still a fucking masterpiece in every way shape and form!!!!!!! the music is genius and its still timeless after 41 years!!!

  62. T.... ....

Peter Gabriel brought the theatrical effect and the class
Phil Collins brought the rhythmic complexity
    Tony Banks brought the virtuosity
Steve Hackett brought the progressive world...
    Mike Rutherford brought the band
and Anthony Phillips brought the English charm and the pastoral universe that typifies Genesis
Indeed, he brought some of the most important thing that made Genesis look so unique

    T.... ....

    dead on right about ant.

    T.... ....

Great definition! You well deserve the nickname TheDukeSound!

    T.... ....

your words are still worthy to be quoted today, some half a century after this song...

    T.... ....

Phil Collins isn't on this album

    T.... ....

    John Mayhew on drums!

  63. K.... M....

Wonderful and mysterious, tragic and religious voices by Peter, and tremendous old-flavoured keyboard solo by Tony ... splendid work indeed!

  64. A.... C....

    Grandiosi

  65. N.... K....

the 1st Genesis album was called "from Genesis to Revelation". This is from their 2nd album.

  66. M.... ....

@deanosky Right. Mayhew is the one.

  71. J.... F....

Gorgeous. Especially since my turntable's broken.

  72. M.... ....

early genesis was sooo much better than the pop-culture monster PC evolved it into. PG > PC

  73. B.... C....

Love this. I've been an early Genesis fan for awhile now but for some reason have always skipped over this song until now. I think it's awesome....a lot like "Looking For Someone" but maybe better. This song hits so many different moods and atmospheres. Genesis is the best at that and that's why I love 'em.

  74. P.... D....

Excellent (but probably underrated) song. Amazing finale beginning around 5:51.
