Genesis - Undertow Lyrics

The curtains are drawn
Now the fire warms the room.
Meanwhile outside
Wind from the north-east chills the air.
It will soon be snowing out there.

And some there are
Cold, they prepare for a sleepless night.
Maybe this will be their last fight.

But we're safe in each other's embrace.
All fears go as I look on your face.

Better think awhile
Or I may never think again.
If this were the last day of your life, my friend
Tell me, what do you think you would do then?

Stand up to the blow that fate has struck upon you
Make the most of all you still have coming to you.
Lay down on the ground and let the tears run from you
Crying to the grass and trees and heaven finally on your knees

Let me live again, let life come find me wanting.
Spring must strike again against the shield of winter.
Let me feel once more the arms of love surround me
Telling me the danger's past. I need not fear the icy blast again

Laughter and music and perfume linger here
and there, and there.
Wine flows from flask to glass and mouth,
As it sooths confusing our doubts.

And soon we feel,
Why do a single thing today.
There's tomorrow sure as I'm here.

So the days they turn into years
And still no tomorrow appears.

Better think awhile, etc.

Walking in ice cold winds. No one in this century should have to endure such. Millionaires should be ashamed!!

  2. S.... G....

I played this on the piano at my old school. I had been a pupil the year before, and had this crazy idea that I wanted to go back and introduce them to prog rock, and specifically Genesis, and basically got permission from the headmaster to be a guest for a couple of days in my old music class to enlighten the kids on the wonders of Banks and Co ! I played a load of Genesis on the piano and then talked about the style of music followed by questions about it etc. Great fun. No idea how I had the courage to do that at 17 years old ! They must have wondered what on earth I was doing ! Was a great feeling driving into my old school after recently passing my test, in my denim jacket and check shirt and not school uniform. Happy memories indeed. That was 33 years ago. Time passes far too quickly.

  3. 1.... ....

    I love Calling All Stations.

  4. C.... M....

This was the last of the storytelling albums to my ears which is why I love it so much. The end of an era of Genesis

  5. U.... M....

... this one, burning rope, lady lies ... seems like Tony went through some serious existentialist (and yet positive) meditation and awareness

  6. c.... r....

¡Genesis¡ ¡Oh, Genesis! I like this great song of Genesis.

  7. P.... K....

I dare to differ with most here.
This album contains some the most well played junk I know of. This song here s still one of the better, but no comparison. I give them by 77 -78 prog-rock was over, and it probably was quite difficult finding a "new home".

  8. E.... L....

Stunning guitar playing. This was supposed to be the album where he lacked a guitar voice. Wrong on that count.

  9. P.... W....

Still one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Gives me chills all these years later as it did when I first heard it decades ago.

  10. M.... M....

Who are the 68 idiots that gave it thumbs down?

  11. R.... H....

I must have heard this song a hundred times before but today those lyrics were like an Exocet missile penetrating my radar right into my soul.

  12. a.... ....

The David Hentschel era is so underrated.

  13. d.... g....

I understand these lyrics are about the fears of life, and that one can fight against them only through real love. How wise and deep feelings!

  14. a.... ....

This album marked the supergroup commercial era opening, following the exit of Peter and Steve. Therefore many of us who prefer the old stuff tend to undermine. Nevertheless, it includes some of the finest Genesis pieces; simply check the lyrics; more touchy and "human" than ever before

  15. z.... s....

Why is this song not better known? The chorus is one of the catchiest they ever wrote. Surely it must be in a soundtrack. Anyone?

  16. 7.... S....

When will tube copy right you out

  17. B.... ....

Pretty Damn Powerful!! It was 1978. I saw their 1978 Tour both in Dayton, Oh. and in Cincinnati! It was early Spring, in Dayton, early Fall in Cincinnati. I've wanted the see Genesis in 1977, SO BADLY, but they only came as close as Cleveland (at least a 4.5 hour Drive up.) I wanted to see the band with Steve Hackett! "Dammit Janet!"

  18. G.... T....

    LP splendido!!!!

  19. D.... S....

They, the Genesii, just keep getting better to listen to! Every nuance, rhythm, counter point, harmony, discord , et al. Not to mention, lyrics to rival the elite of English literature! Absolute inspired brilliance, and a little crafty graft!

  20. C.... S....

This song makes me sob my heart out...

  21. S.... C....

    Un'altra splendida canzone

  22. B.... B....

    What a tune.. timeless...

  23. M.... A....

    A superb song!! :o) :o)

  24. I.... C....

I cannot express in words what this song does to me. I feel like that about many Genesis songs but this one in particular is just so perfect in every way. It's clever, different, melodic and full of feeling and drama. I'm so happy others feel the same way because there are so many who write Genesis off as either pretentious prog rock or 'Phil Collins inspired pop'. They clearly either have not listened to this or just don't get it.

    I.... C....

    I concur Ian....

  25. C.... H....

This is ultimate Genesis genius! I feel with this album the band reached a plateau that they never eclipsed, but they went to another level which they were able to maintain up until the end!

  26. P.... S....

People seem to pan this album and particularly this song. I just don't get why. Every song on this album gives me a visual image when I close my eyes. Isn't that what it's about? Both Peter and Phil were always like a dad telling a story.

  27. D.... S....

Such a fantastic blend of music and lyrics thank you.
In memory of my darling angel Daffodil who is now a spirit in the sky.

    D.... S....

    Bless you mate.

  28. M.... P....

Beautiful music especially Tony Banks keyboard etc. playing, and Phil’s amazing vocals.

  29. p.... 2....

    Stand up to the blow.....
    Goosebumps every time!

  30. p.... 2....

    Greatest album ever.

  31. G.... M....

Was blown away by this album when I first heard it 1978 and pleased to say I still am. Whatever happened to Punk by the way?

  32. v.... h....

    Still listening, 14/02/2019

  33. S.... M....

Amazing...love this song since I first listened to it

  34. B.... L....

one of the best songs ever

  35. P.... D....

The original mix as well...Tony Banks at his best, along with One For The Vine...Thanks for a great post

  36. K.... K....

One of their best songs....."let me live again" ........

  37. r.... i....

I have, at the age of 61, found love of my life. The sun in my sky and my moon at night. When a bird flys, she is what it’s flying to. Yet I’m not what she’s flying to. Trying hard to not lay down on the ground and let the tears fall from me. I have been crying to the earth and trees and heaven finally on my knees. Such a true bloody song...damn it!

  41. N.... A....

    Tony Banks, Supreme English Romantic

  42. 1.... ....

Superlative music of the genre; masterful, compelling, enduring; a miracle, really, I think. For that matter, the entire album is.

  43. J.... P....

The album is a true work of art, full of spectacular nuances that deeply touch the soul, I can not understand those who give a I do not like it, they do not really know what they miss to enjoy ... fortunately I'm not in that group. .

    J.... P....

    Agree Jorge. .

  44. B.... G....

Everybody talks about Peter, Steve, whatever. I like them. But I tell you, almost all Genesis albums have something musically speaking, and even lyrically, that, as a musician, touches me. They are not at all usual. Even in the "pop field"

  45. J.... M....

Very similar to Tony Banks first solo album.

  46. O.... A....

pure and powerful... the chorus is one of Tony Bank's very best strokes of inspiration

  47. E.... S....

One of the few tracks that makes me cry through joy !

  48. B.... E....

The more I listen to ATTWT, I realise that there are a few outstanding tracks, of which is the best.

  49. G.... ....

I just found this today. I have listened to it about 10 times already

  50. L.... B....

This track should have been at least 7 minutes long ...

  51. W.... ....

    That chorus is mindblowing.

  52. J.... M....

Moves me to tears every time

  53. R.... D....

This is an astonishing song and so moving. Beautifully written chord-wise and emotionally sung, it is an underrated Genesis track for me. And I like lots and lots of their music! Thanks for this.

  54. A.... B....

The end of Genesis with no Hackett,, but Collins is now taking the music in his direction of pop ,,it’s good however

  55. M.... M....

My sister brought me to this concert when this album first came out I was 14 or 15 . I absolutely loved it ! They told a story before each song - I have been a fan ever since! It was a great concert just magical!

  56. A.... H....

    Pure beauty......

  57. C.... G....

    48 people are insane.

  58. P.... P....

C'mon... Why aren't you talking about Phil's voice!? This song is so hard to sing and phil made a huge work with it.

  59. M.... A....

Wow!! This song still blows me away, after all these 38 years, after first hearing it.

  60. f.... &....

this song captured me and is best song Collins ever sang. greatest element of music and emotion and mood!!!!!

  61. T.... B....

    Orcheatral

  62. C.... C....

I was reading that Genesis did not care for this album, from You Tube viewers, I find that really difficult to understand. But hey you know, it demonstrates that we all have opinions and our views, it's a matter of which one do you really believe in and stand by. I love this album, I played it many times to the point it was worn out. I was just 15 when this album came out, and listening to the lyrics all I wanted to do was go to the States and feel what it was like.....to see the huge skies and big mountains, the dusty trails..........and one day I lived next to it all for 2 years...my dream had come true!! Genesis obviously was inspired by the States in making this album, like thousands of other bands too. God bless USA and thank you for everything, and making my life VERY happy!!!!!

  63. S.... M....

    Classic album ...flawless

  64. A.... L....

    Beautifulllllll !!!!!!

  65. J.... O....

Think about the words of this song my friends.

  66. d.... o....

This is whats right in life

  67. R.... K....

This is up there with Entangled & Firth of Fifth as my favorite Genesis tunes.

  68. M.... s....

    Brano stupendo

  69. A.... ....

Did they make you change your mixes to the remastered versions? They sound kind of off now.

  70. g.... c....

    love now,,,,dont wait,,,,

  71. s.... ....

    Always come back to Genesis

  75. T.... F....

    Excellent Sonic quality

  76. J.... B....

spring will strike again against the shield of winter

  77. b.... ....

I know why this album was underrated, because people are simps with no attention span.. in a word or 2, people suck ... and only the few know how to feel something from music

  78. A.... C....

Uno dei tanti capolavori firmati da Banks!

  79. B.... F....

    One word description: EPIC.......

  80. S.... J....

Un disco maravilloso y poco valorado.

  81. b.... ....

Even the slower songs are challenging to play, really have to focus. Amazing piece of music!

  82. M.... P....

    Tear jerker

  83. b.... ....

    Tony Banks masterpiece!

  84. c.... ....

"Crying to the grass and trees and heaven finally on my knees." Makes me cry every time! So beautiful!

  85. S.... B....

I wore out the grooves on this album and loved this ballad......

  86. v.... h....

Tell me what do you think then? Awesome statement.

  87. J.... S....

This song, to me, is about the thoughts of a German citizen who lost a Jewish friend to the holocaust. The lyrics fit it perfectly.

  88. H.... C....

Lyrics just make more and more sense to me, the older I get!!

    H.... C....

The older I get, the more I fart.

  89. 1.... ....

If this were the last day of your life, my friend,
Tell me, what do you think you would do then?

  90. M.... M....

What a track, what a band. They were so sophisticated musically, and lyrically I personally think this is one of Phil's best. When you think of all this band have given us, as a whole and as solo acts, it's incredible. From Trespass all the way to We can't dance, the variety, quantity, originality and the sheer quality of the music, it really is mind boggling. Phil and Peter's epic solo careers, Tony's great orchestral work, Mike and the Mechanics, Steve's solo career, it goes on and on. There was a special thread running through this band. They all contributed to and benefited from it. There have been many, many great bands out there, but there's nothing like Genesis.

    M.... M....

Totally with you on almost everything! Just to clarify though... this was a Tony composition.... Perhaps you mean that this is one of Phil's best vocal performances - in which case I'm spot-on with you!

    M.... M....

Lyrically the best and the build ups to Tony's magical touch on keyboards is an orgasm in heaven

  91. A.... S....

    this song is fucking amazing

  92. A.... A....

The last good album of Genesis

    A.... A....

    No it's not

  93. c.... ....

    instant classic.

  94. J.... S....

They really hit the spot with Undertow. I'm a bit of an early bird purist when it comes to Genesis, but this is definitely in my top five all time favourite Genesis songs. Such power and beauty. Wonderful.

  95. A.... D....

Reminds me to Curious Feeling of Banks, it is undeniable, that this song could be fit in that album of Tony, with other vocalist but the same melody and magic. 100% Banks

  96. P.... G....

    wonderfull song and album

  97. C.... B....

i dedicate this to some of the patients i have worked with-past and present for those no longer here r.i.pxxx
