There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what this song is about (I see a lot of crude comments). But basically there is a very strong bond
between an injured man and a comforting nurse (this goes back thousands of years). The nurse brings the damaged man back to health and, as his only contact, he falls in love with her. She is his saviour. This song, however is about hospice care. This is a dying man flirting with the nurse taking care of him, but she is much too young, and is quite off-put and afraid of him. Ultimately, he becomes terrified himself, of dying, and in his last gasps of breath, begs her to hold his hand as he passes. But she is scared of him, and stands back in fear and disgust while he dies. He passes away alone.

This song gets better and more epic with each listening

To all the negatives ..clearly music isn't your forte. Its a track of not only great mystical lyrics but great music with great imagination and in today's world a great escape.

in my opinion this song is Genesis' s masterpiece. Every single note is perfect. There is this strange feeling in the initial lullaby. Like a horror, like a deranged mind....awesome.

Heard it first in 71..at college...on"underground"hour on Wgrd fm.grand rapids at night alone in a dark... high as a mug...

There are some Genesis Spngs that when you listen to them you think well this is the best song ever recorded. And then you listen to another Genesis Song of the same category … In my early 20ties this has been my favourite. I am sure because of the power that contrasts the soft beginning.

I loved this era of music and these guys were right up there with the best. Yes, King Crimson, Camel, Renaissance, The Moody Blues, Genesis....what more can you say. However, to me anyway, ELP were the most magnificent of them all. They didn't need the guitar to make such wonderful music. Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer....3 count them 3, wonderful musicians making the masterpieces that they did. Keith's keyboards were out of this world. Greg's bass playing and that wonderful voice cemented the band. Carl Palmer....what can i say....to me the greatest rock drummer of all time, or at least the top 3. BRILLIANT!!!!!!

You stand there with your fixed expression casting doubt on all I have to say but I will say there are some other great songs on the album. The crescendo in Fountain of Salmacis is epic. Gotta love Seven Stones and Harold The Barrel can chop his toes off and serve them all for tea anytime

In 1977, I was 22 and Genesis came to some gigs in Brazil. At that time, Brazil was not route to rock bands and Peter Gabriel was not long the singer, but Phil Collins did very super in all sold concerts. I went at Rio. The finish of the concert was the last part of Musical Box. Amazing!!! Great memories!

From 3:00 min until 3:20, it is as if a fifth station was born and everything was widely unknown: the colors, the cold, the heat; the virgin perception towards everything that is presented new, and the reason for existence or the reason for death no longer matters. Everything, absolutely everything, rides clean, disjointed and the straight line falls, giving way to the immortality of true ineffable sensations. I love those 20 seconds.
