Genesis - The Lady Lies Lyrics

The man steps out in the moonlight
At the sound of a scream from below.
He thinks he is a warrior
So he picks up his sword and goes.

From the mouth of the monster
He rescues the maiden fair.
But we know she's a demon
Come to lure him to demon's lair.

Through restless foliage and tall trees he leads
To a house in a clearing, a place in her fear she calls home.

"Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I'll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like."

And though his body bids him
To enter in with her,
There was something in her manner
That his mind could not ignore.

Also it is whispered
In the kingdom far and wide,
To beware a little cottage
In the forest in a glade.

For who knows what magic takes place in his world?
So he just thanks her kindly preparing to go on his way.

"Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I'll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like.

Come to my garden,
Taste the fruits and the spices of love.
You can't resist me,
I'm the kind that your dreams tell you of."

"So glad you could make it
We had everything arranged.
So glad you saw fit to pay a call."

Some men never listen,
And others never learn,
But why this man did as he did
Only he will ever know.

He knew he was walking
Into a waiting trap,
Neatly set up for him
With a bait so richly wrapped.

So he went inside there to take on what he found
But he never escaped them, for who can escape what he desires?

"Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I'll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like."

Genesis The Lady Lies Comments
  1. t.... ....

The drums and bass playing on this track is epic. Listen from 4:58

  2. C.... V....

“ You can't resist me, I'm the kind that your dreams tell you of."

  3. S.... G....

Dislikes from Take That fans or something.

  4. m.... ....

My fave. Sounds like an outtake from Wind & Wuthering.

  5. J.... ....

Recited that the first part of the song to a girl I fell in love with for was into poetry about a year ago, since then we've spent a year together and its been great, we've done so much together and this song will always have special place in my heart as will her

  6. U.... M....

... for who can escape what he desires?

  7. F.... J....

    Sorry bassline

  8. F.... J....

    That baseline

  9. S.... R....

Did they put this song before "Follow me …" because of the very different stories the Songs tell?

  10. L.... R....

This was one of Genesis best album. Especially after Steve Hackett left the group Genesis did not skip a beat. Tony Banks play the keyboards as if Steve Hackett was still there. That goes to show you what talent these three musicians have. A very classical and vintage sound

  11. Z.... G....

magic in the background voices 05:25

  12. r.... s....

One of their greatest tracks...to me that is.

  13. R.... M....

This is a song about things that anyone ever remotely involved with intelligence stuff knows is absolutely real; the kind of set-ups that have killed people for centuries.

  14. T.... T....

And then there were three men Phillip Collins Anthony banks and Michael Rutherford

  15. S.... D....

Thank you, Mr Banks. Proper Genesis.

  16. J.... R....

    A Genesis ecstasy portal.

  17. C.... A....

Best song of the album, Tony Banks tales

  18. P.... ....

Phil should have listened to this song before getting married three times

  19. h.... g....

I love everything about this epic masterpiece, the bass , piano, keyboard, drums and wonderful storytelling !

  20. M.... P....

Tony Banks really carries this song.

  21. D.... I....

This track is a masterpiece in my opinion.

  22. D.... ....

    I am drenched in memories.

  23. I.... A....

A place in her fear she calls home.... And something special after if you like... For who can escape what he desires.

  24. l.... m....

This is musically at the top level....Talent is still present....

  25. t.... ....

an amazing ending to this song, maybe their best "ending".

  26. G.... C....

Great memories of a Great band, always loved this track👌🏼❤️🎶

  27. R.... g....

I've been listening to this song for around 40 years now - what the hell is it that Phil 'sings' in the play-out (at 5:26)!!

    R.... g....

I think it's 'ooooh or yoooou can't resist me'.

  28. r.... m....

One of their best songs for sure

  29. A.... C....

I bought this album in cassete when I was 13 years of age, when listened to it I couldn't understand it and now I'm 51 years of age and this album is one of favorites, especially this beautiful song. The piano at end of the song is amazing.

  30. s.... ....

I know he didn't write this, but I'm wondering if this was the song that got Phil in trouble?

  31. J.... V....

    Maravilloso

  32. J.... ....

Great song just don’t like the modern pumped up drums and the keyboards don’t have that open midrange that wraps that song like a warm blanket.
Get the 91 remasters, best.,especially The Lamb.

    J.... ....

Jellybeantiger yeah I was comparing this to an old CD and definitely mixed a little different

  33. T.... A....

This song took a while to sink in but when it did boy!!! This is a brilliant song talking about the general temptations of life. Great lyrics and of course Tony Banks and Phil Collins are on fire especially in the last minute or so

  34. D.... Y....

I remember when I was playing this one in my car and my (now) ex said "ugghhh, Genesis!" and flipped the CD off without asking me... did I mention that he's my EX? LOL! ;)

  35. D.... ....

For the longest time, I was resistant to listening to anything post Wind and Wuthering. Then one day, my friend’s Dad played Deep in the Motherlode. I have since given ...And Then There Were Three a chance. Anything released under the Genesis name by this point would obviously suffer by comparison to their past work. Steve Hackett’s presence is noticeably missing here, as well, but the creative powers of Banks, Collins and Rutherford are more than sufficient.

  36. r.... m....

    One of their best songs

  37. S.... H....

This song started it all for me. 1979. I was nine years old and my sister had this album. I can't remember how or why I played this song, but the second that fanfare like riff happened after the first verse appeared I was instantly a Genesis fan. I just remember how it grabbed me so. I had a pretty sophisticated ear for a little kid at that time. I was a huge Queen fan and this Genesis music fit right in with the kind of stuff I enjoyed. One by one I later become exposed by other classic albums from Genesis. Become a life-long fan.

  38. D.... ....

That little triangle of fur gets us men into all sorts of trouble..........resistance is futile lol!!!

  39. L.... M....

❤ For who can escape what he desires ❤.

  40. I.... C....

    Excellent ending

  41. J.... M....

    Great song

  42. A.... C....

    wonderful

  43. p.... ....

With the years, I realize that ATTWT is no so much if a miss. The Lady Lies was certainly underrated, an intense and uplifting progressive track.

  44. M.... 1....

Wahnsinns Song, ach hätten Sie doch in diesem Musikstil weiter gemacht...

  45. C.... H....

    Get out Paulinha P.A !
    For Godsaken !

  46. P.... ....

    5:25
    "Can't resist me, I know"

  47. J.... T....

    very underrated song

  48. M.... 1....

  50. Z.... D....

    5:25 "We'll miss you Steve"

    Z.... D....

Someone else thinks Phil sings that, but I think he says ' Can't resist me'.

  51. h.... ....

Top ten Genesis song for sure.

  52. M.... M....

love it, love it so much...

  53. l.... m....

this one and All in a mouse's night...

  54. S.... N....

I love the bass line in this song!!

    S.... N....

Rutherford had to be using a Pick. 32nd notes come off too quick for using i.e., Geddy Lee style.

  55. J.... Z....

Absolutely LOVE this song! I actually enjoy the live versions I have heard even better.

  56. B.... S....

One of the best albums Genesis did.Underrated to this day I feel. There's people who like Genesis who never heard any of this.As well as other stuff

  57. r.... ....

"...for who can escape what he desires..."

  58. E.... F....

I bought this album in 1980 because of Follow You, follow Me song, great song but the lesser of the songs of this album. You may disagree but I believe it is Genisis's best.

    E.... F....

Elmer Fudd wind & withering is my fav but after listening to this for 39 years I’ve finally fallen in love with this album

    E.... F....

I’ve always put this album as my favourite,my cousin got me into Genesis many years ago & would probably disagree as he prefers the really early stuff, but ATTW3 brings back great memories to me & the musicianship on this album is outstanding.. LOVE IT👌🏼🎶

  59. W.... D....

One of my favorites. It has all of the creative and musical elements that make Genesis so great. The fadeout is manic brilliance.

  60. A.... E....

    Fav Genesis tune ever

  61. L.... L....

and to think, this ALL started with a piano lesson in the 60's

  62. J.... W....

I saw Genesis live for the first time when they toured this album. I have never since heard so pure and big a sound as that since. The sound man was playing Happy The Man before the show. I had never heard them before. Bonus!

  63. a.... f....

4:38. sounds like Mike hit bum note , but the following progression finally made it so brillant.

    a.... f....

    Are you sure it's at 4:38 ?

  64. F.... ....

    Genesis never disappoints me

  65. F.... M....

Those synth chords at the chorus are friggin thick. So purple lol

    F.... M....

you're right, if I would to associate this song with any color it would be purple
    synesthesia much?

    F.... M....

    nice doom face lol

  66. L.... L....

Best song Phil made in his life

    L.... L....

    Tony wrote it

    L.... L....

I think you'll find that Tony wrote it

  67. g.... ....

    Love this song. Simply amazing.

  68. J.... C....

anyone know if lyrics is really "I fear the dark and I live all alone." I always hear: "I fear the dark and I live in for moonlight"? But whatever it is all in this song is fantastic! And the drums of Genesis is the most creative i ever heard.

    J.... C....

It is:"I fear the dark, and I live all alone. I'll give you wine and food too and something special after if you like".
I misheard the lyrics to a few other songs on the 'And then there were three' album, and on this song, I misheard part of it as: "I'll give you one photo (photograph)( instead of wine and food too) and something special laughter
(instead of after) if you like".

  69. M.... ....

    Wonderful performance...

  70. C.... ....

    +Johnny C's Music Emporium
Thanks for the lyrics man-you are awesome!

  71. C.... ....

Mad respect to Genesis for creating the lyrics and the music which so eloquently tell this story. IMHO, _and then there were three_ was the peak for Genesis and progressive rock in general. What other band than Genesis tells stories this well with such great music?
The crescendo after "for who can escape what he desires?" is epic!

    Phil's drumming is spectacular!

I hadn't heard this song in _decades_ and for reasons I will never know fragments of these lyrics appeared in my head. The best I could come with was "genesis don't leave me i fear the dark and I'm all alone", and wouldn't you know, in about a quarter of a second frickin' Google came up with a link for this video! Yet more proof that not only does Google know all, but can figure out what you're asking from fragmentary babble!

    C.... ....

Tough to beat. July 25 1978 Merriwether post. Never forget, never

  72. p.... ....

    A song for MGTOW.

  73. c.... ....

just finished my uncut ultimate genesis music guide and it was a great blast.

  74. E.... G....

    great musician

  75. a.... ....

    Stunning, to say the least.

  76. e.... ....

This song and The Trees by Rush sound very similar. In a very good way

    e.... ....

I may have to listen to that song by Rush. I love them, but I don't believe I know that song.

    e.... ....

I'm a huge fan of The Trees as well as The Lady Lies, but I would have never considered comparing the two.

  77. D.... ....

Amazing album. Never get tired of it. 💜💜💜💜

  78. F.... A....

    love this song

    F.... A....

    My favourite from the album

  79. P.... ....

A masterpiece and my favourite Genesis album.

    P.... ....

So glad you saw fit to pay a call

  80. J.... F....

Does anyone know what Phil sings at 5.24?

    J.... F....

I think he sings "you can't resist me".

  81. f.... ....

"For who can escape what he desires..."
Epic lyrics, astounding bass, vocals, keys, a very moving song with elements of jazz, classical, prog, rock, and when those guys in Genesis were young and still in love with their music, they made true art!

    f.... ....

all their songs have such substance and depth everything is top shelf ..excellence

  82. G.... G....

    I love this album

  83. O.... U....

Und jetzt ha da sind "SIE" is das nich geil, aufdrehen Leute aufdrehen...... yea...

  84. m.... ....

"come with me, I need you..."

  85. b.... ....

    Best outro EVER!

  86. b.... l....

Does anyone know what is so silently sung in the outro?

    b.... l....

When I first got the album on cassette and played it , I misheard some of the lyrics to a few of the songs . As for what Phil is singing in the outro , it sounds to me as : " you can't resist me " or " you can't escape me ".

I think he was just repeating part of one of the previous lines of the song with " you can't resist me, for effect; I don't think Tony Banks would have a message to Steve Hackett on one of his songs. Although they were two different songs, it may have been a similar situation to the fade-out of 'Los Endos' and Phil singing"there's an angel standing in the sun ".from 'Supper's ready'.

I agree with The Ban Man it sounds like "always the same" which connects with the story of repeating mistakes as The Lady Lies

  87. M.... S....

seen them at least 5 times the most on the money band besides rush

    M.... S....

Damn, that's 5 times more than I ever did and I am the world's biggest Genesis fan...... :(

  88. J.... J....

    Brilliant writing and musical timing.

  89. J.... R....

This reminds me of a simpler, more radio-friendly Fountain of Salmacis. If nothing else, it demonstrates how pre-Gabriel and post-Gabriel Genesis tackle what's essentially the same subject.

    J.... R....

    ... in the 70's !...

  90. D.... S....

    Oh, and Tony.. Die Dreigroschenoper?

  91. D.... S....

Oh, Phil (sorry had to edit last post 'cause I didn't capitalise) I listen to your drumming every day but i still think the bloke who fell out of the window was more fabulous in those snare rumbles. Stuff happens. Ta very much for this nice tune. I'll listen to it forever.

  92. D.... S....

Real emotion about love lost. It's all Phil. Tim Smith must have heard this as a child.

  93. R.... K....

The last minute with the fade out gives me goosebumps, so magical. Beautiful song

    R.... K....

yea, that fade out really locks into your memory banks and makes you smile thinking about it years later

  94. .... ....

Stumbled upon this song and now I've been listening to it for couple of hours unable to stop.

  95. S.... O....

Another good one from Genesis. The instrumental part makes me think, our hero is humming and harring as to whether to go into THE COTTAGE! He follows her in (Banks high pitched synth, the joyess bit), but then the very last bit of instrumental sinks to a dourness of finding the trap.

  96. D.... ....

Rutherfords bass playing is out of this world on this track. Its one of my favorite Genesis songs. Then again arent they all.

    D.... ....

I feel that the bass playing on this whole album is so great, making your blood flow a little faster.

    D.... ....

I've always loved this particular bass and Mike is such an underrated Bass and Electric Guitarist IMHO :)

    D.... ....

I really agree with you. Mike's bass is simply fantastic, not only on this song but on most of his work. He's also a great guitarist.

  97. p.... a....

The best theatrical song of Genesis. Many section of play.Great, great Genesis, i love this piece!

  98. m.... ....

    And true
