Genesis - The Carpet Crawlers Lyrics

There is lambswool under my naked feet.
The wool is soft and warm,
-gives off some kind of heat.
A salamander scurries into flame to be destroyed.
Imaginary creatures are trapped in birth on celluloid.
The fleas cling to the golden fleece,
Hoping they'll find peace.
Each thought and gesture are caught in celluloid.
There's no hiding in my memory.
There's no room to void.

The crawlers cover the floor in the red ochre corridor.
For my second sight of people, they've more lifeblood than before.
They're moving in time to a heavy wooden door,
Where the needle's eye is winking, closing in on the poor.

The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in, to get out."

There's only one direction in the faces that I see;
It's upward to the ceiling, where the chambers said to be.
Like the forest fight for sunlight, that takes root in every tree.
They are pulled up by the magnet, believing that they're free.

The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in, to get out."

Mild mannered supermen are held in kryptonite,
And the wise and foolish virgins giggle with their bodies glowing bright.
Through a door a harvest feast is lit by candlelight;
It's the bottom of a staircase that spirals out of sight.

The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in, to get out."

The porcelain mannikin with shattered skin fears attack.
And the eager pack lift up their pitchers- they carry all they lack.
The liquid has congealed, which has seeped out through the crack,
And the tickler takes his stickleback.

The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in, to get out."

I Love this Song so much since I've heard it for the first time !!! MAGIC - FEELING - GREAT - EMOTIONS. Peter Gabriel was 26 years old when he wrote this song. What was going on in his head and what kind of emotions did he have to write such a great song. One of the best songs ever !!! WOW - LOVE !!!

What happens when for no reason at all the headlights are expanding out to some areas that can't help but open alot arms whose only sights we're on the last people you thought in the world could take into thier arms and show what happens when you throw them a beam to which can only love the choices that our feet have in front of them . I know what has glory written all over it , and it doesn't stand for an eye that one day will beg borrow and steal for it , it , fully understands the need and leaves little doubt that you don't , what might get in the way of the obvious are a likely hood that it will serve a nagging chronic pain any justice with it's very lazy counterpart . I don't have nose , one im going to stick out or in the path of what should easily be dismissed and only take to the watering hole what an ocean has little difficulty in rationalizing , I want my results to uncover s distinct taste that will order up and lay down the last thing I ever wanted to happen ! My ass burning helplessly away in what could possibly be a misguided food for thought that is some really deep shit you know perfectly well only has two options !

They say you have to have a short memory to make sure it doesn't get you caught up in what life can sometimes dish out like it was free spoiled ice cream that somehow left you blindsided while scooping down a little to good to be true . When I want to be reminded of a past , one I should of been driving home , it's not really an issue that has to have extra , extra nuts bolting or slowing to some music , it just needs keep hum drum and tweedle dumb in some place that reminds me of how a privilege I never took lightly served some miles so completely lit , it's a wonder im still alive . I long for the day that has it's eye on a prize I couldn't recognize and a night foolish enough to pop it open like it was just a question of time . Your on the road to nowhere and especially when sucks all the life out of you in a heartbeat , the one road I leave well enough alone has got a special place in my heart that is always going to need a good looksee by what everybody claims to be insanity !

like Pink Floyd The Wall you need to hear the album from beginning to end. shuffling won't do.

  15. Ronald Russell

In 1973 in HS met a guitarist. Asked him what he listened to “Genesis”. Who else? I asked. “Genesis”. I thought that was ridiculous to be so obsessed with one group. 1974-1975 I mostly listed to Genesis, 2 hours everyday! I still adore this music. I wish I could thank that guitarist

We are in a process that along the way we are suppose to recognize a vision that someday will make quick business of anyone's claim to fame to which all who wanted a good look at prosperity were never going to be accused of having a special interest in what will undoubtedly last forever
To see what is invisible or what thinks clearly when pushed in front of a wheel has got to acknowledge the road less taken with a grain of salt that alot of cold indifferent food for thought is ready to serve up and splash down what lands on it's feet , not just because it's well balanced , but also in how it plays to some music that will keep everybody alive and kicking . Let's not begin in the last place anybody ever expected to die and end where the first and foremost called out to a particular reason , one love has in it's most passionate way hits a remarkable hole with astonishing resolve , leaving us all with some very questionable made in the shade . I got some sense that our instincts are not what separates but more what keeps us together during what can outshine some work we don't see as pertinent until it's under another brilliant light that will thank it's lucky stars they aren't going to play any role in providing where cold as steel motherfuckers get to the business of making a few repairs are beautiful heavenly bodies just couldn't seem to get out of the way of ! A Stock Market Crash , really ?

    ALWAYS ALWAYS UTTERLY ORGASMIC !!

  41. Teresa Fonseca

    Belíssimo, não há palavras....

  42. Peter Lawson

An incredible song; later versions don’t come anywhere close to the original’s perfection. The lamb lies down was the last great Genesis album in my opinion and the band took a nose dive into the 80’s....

    Tony England

A Trick of the Tail has some good songs (Ripples, Entangled, Los Endos) but ugh, some of the 80s stuff they did in later albums.

    Peter Lawson

Tony England yep, they went from an excellent prog band to pop mush. Mind you, I expect they followed the money...

  46. Igal Flint

Melody , voice and arrangements are delirious but the lyrics are full of nonsense.

    Tony England

I totally agree with you there, Igal Flint. Such a beautiful song with lyrics about fleas. I wish they'd re-recorded this with more fitting lyrics.

  47. Ulf Quast

    Peter Gabriel is the Best

  48. Sandra Serbiano

    Superb.

  49. Stephanie White

In the seventies, my high school friends were listening to disco, and I was listening to carpet crawlers...it's a very beautiful song!

  54. Rea Watters

    Brilliant ✌

  55. S. Rathgeber

How can a song with such weird lyrics get so Deep in our hearts? We are all carpet crawlers who got to get in to get out? I Always get goosebumbs and Tears in my eyes when listening to this song. I never Mention it as my favourite Genesis song. But it was the first that I knew - without knowing it was Genesis - the same Group that sang "That´s all" and "Mama" etc. Then when I got into the old (real) Genesis it was like an old companion that I discovered new. And if you could follow that lines you´re Ready to understand the lyrics here.

    Corrado Penna

I love Genesis and I loved U2 too. Now I can't stand Bono hypocrisy: he's a friend of USA war-presidents, a mascotte of Al Gore's global warming swindle (and still the use lots of energy for their public performances producing tons of CO2)
