Genesis - Stagnation Lyrics

To Thomas S. Eiselberg, a very rich man, who was wise enough
to spend all his fortunes in burying himself many miles beneath
the ground. As the only surviving member of the human race, he inherited the whole world.

Here today the red sky tells his tale,
but the only listening eyes are mine
There is peace amongst the hills,
and the night will cover all my pride.
Blest are they who smile from bodies free,
seems to me like any other crowd
who are waiting to be saved.

Wait, there still is time for washing in the pool,
wash away the past.
Moon, my long-lost friend is smiling from above,
smiling at my tears.
Come we'll walk the path to take us to my home,
keep outside the night.
The ice-cold knife has come to decorate the dead,
somehow.

And each will find a home,
And there will still be time,
for loving my friend
- You are there -

And I will wait for ever, beside the silent mirror
And fish for bitter minnows amongst the weeds and slimy water.

I, I...said I want to sit down
I, I...said I want to sit down.
I want a drink - I want a drink,
To take all the dust and the dirt from my throat,
I want a drink - I want a drink,
To wash out the filth that is deep in my guts,
I want a drink.

THEN LET US DRINK - THEN LET US SMILE
- THEN LET US GO.

Genesis Stagnation Comments
  1. Harold Thebarrel

One of my favorite songs from Genesis, the REAL Genesis original sound, lyrics and moody music. From Genesis To The Lamb you can't go wrong!

  2. Christine Robinson

I had an apartment on the third floor of a Victorian with a sun porch. I fixed myself a JD and Coke, rolled a joint and went out to catch some sun listening to this. What an experience. What a summer.

  3. Kenneth Marshall

Shades of Morricone in early Genesis

  4. Andrew williams

It's amazing to me how much better and stronger the drums sounds in this new mix. Kudos to John Mayhew (RIP) for some solid work on all tracks, and glad to know that in his last years he got to know how beloved he was by Genesis fans.

  5. BandfromtheBand

I still think that it's the most beautiful song on "Trespass." The last 4 minutes choke me up!

  6. Mr. GTO

    Genesis

Peter Gabriel – lead vocals, flute, accordion, tambourine, bass drum
Anthony Phillips – acoustic 12-string guitar, lead electric guitar, dulcimer, vocals
Anthony Banks – organ, piano, Mellotron, acoustic 12-string guitar, vocals
Michael Rutherford – acoustic 12-string guitar, electric bass guitar, nylon guitar, cello, vocals
John Mayhew – drums, percussion, vocals

  7. imconno

I think this is my favourite Genesis song 😍

    Stephen Dix

Hear it live by going to see The Musical Box - best Genesis tribute band - touring now

  8. Eric Ferguson

Probably my favorite song of all. Apropos how this always turns up in nearly all their medleys

  9. brad pertner

    Perfection

  10. Mr Spock

This song even made a Vulcan cry ! So beautiful !

  11. Todd Ehrman

Guitargasms.....imagine Steve Hackett teaming up with Phillips...awesome track

    Stephen Dix

I suggest seeing The Musical Box - they are touring now. Best Genesis Tribute band and they do this song

  12. DynaCentral

genesis is fantastic on their whole run. including duke and beyond! GREAT group! GREAT artists

  13. cafe 115

Hola...nunca sabré esa raya negra que sale o entra del arco y entra en la habitación en su portada del álbum, todo eso y más hace a Genesis, en su periodo con Peter y Steve, el grupo más grande en la historia de la música. Saludos

I will never know that black stripe that comes out or enters the arch and enters the room on its album cover, all that and more makes Genesis, in his period with Peter and Steve, the bigger group in the history of music. Cheers

  14. Donald Tramp

Here today the red sky tells his tale

    Then let us drink
    Then let us smile
    Then let us go

    Joe Ramos

This is quite simply one of my favorite songs ever, period.

  15. Buntspecht

    ONE OFTHE VERRY BEST

  16. Stephen Lisson

Phil's drumming, absolutely Brilliant!!! on this song.

    Harry Baran

    It`s John Mayhew.

  17. JBFC DIGITAL PRINT

    Macet kabeh wis

  18. S. Rathgeber

What a range of styles in one song.

  19. A Sammler

I saw a '90s interview with Tony Banks, where he defended this (and "Looking for Someone") but threw the rest of _Trespass_ under the bus

he was almost visibly praying not to be asked about "White Mountain"

    Dumpy Goodness

I feel MANY of these bands put out a lOT OF FILLER, b/c they kinda had to. (Super-pressure to Make New Album Then Tour Then Repeat... even if they had no good material, they HAD to put something down, under severe deadlines.)

IMO, this album stinks EXCEPT for Stagnation (9/10) and Looking For Someone, so evidently the band agrees. (that usuallyhappens. EX: as a boy, I thought "Paranoid" by Sabbath sounded like Garbage Filler. Today, you can go online and see the band says it was... Garbage Filler!)

I was just listening to some 1970s RUSH... and holy shit it's 90% FILLER. In their entire career they've only had like 7 Great Songs. YIKES.

ALL my fave bands have FILLER, from Zep to Beatles to Floyd to Sabbath to YES to ALL OF THEM. It's more the fault of the MACHINE than the bands. They did NOT want to put out filler.

    Dumpy Goodness

AND DON'T FORGET ALL THESE BANDS WERE IN THEIR EARLY 20s, SO THEY HAD TO BUCKLE TO THE INTENSE PRESSURE FROM THE RECORD COMPANY AND MANAGEMENT.

    cat jrg

    why dude?

    Kenneth Marshall

Not wise to throw The Knife under the bus. Might get a flat tyre

  20. John Wallen

What a massive step they made from the first album to this.

    Dumpy Goodness

funny: that's probably almost entirely due to their AGE.

Right? The difference between someone at 18 and someone at 20 can be ginormous, vs 28 to 20.

Some bands make a huge leap for other reasons (YES Drama, 1980, to YES 90215, 1983, is insane, for instance) but some it's just cuz they were KIDS the first album and MEN by the second (also due to the TOURING after the first album).

Like Rush, when Neil Peart joins, creates massive shift in their ENTIRE sound.

  21. geffel

    Incredible tune (s)

  22. Steve Bradley

    Beautiful.

  23. Christine Robinson

Love this album. White Mountain is my favorite. And the rest of the album is my second favorite!
I have to remind myself it's not Phil on the drums.

  24. Tom Burns

Someone said this, Trespass was the only real Genesis. This sounds more like a beginning to something special (like someone said)

  25. Peter Moriarty

My favourite Genesis song wonderfull song Gabriel at his best

  26. gol keeper

masterpiece.and they were in their early twenties....

  27. jonathan1972

3:08 really sets my mind to times gone by and all the things I truly miss

  29. Antanas Mokus

4:00 - 5:51 in the lowest volume you are able to hear it, knowing this song by heart.

  30. 2003Cpayne

Possibly the lost Genesis classic. It certainly paved the way for The Musical Box and Supper’s Ready.

    Deku Scrub

I heard Supper's Ready before Stagnation, loved it, but now I've come to find this song and album are my favourite I've heard so far

    Dumpy Goodness

@Deku Scrub I'd put Stagnation in TOP FIVE Genesis songs. (Watcher / Firth Of Fifth fight for 1st Place. Lamb is in there too. Misunderstanding is too!) (Cinema Show is maybe in there too!)

And I'd argue the "I WANT A DRINK!" section here is Peter's FINEST moment in all Genesis history.

I AGREE with the band that Peter's lyrics could get very very clunky and forced (as even Peter admits now). The words and his vocals here are a PERFECT match. (By contrast, I LOVE Watcher but some of the lyrics ruin the moment. Ironically, it was Tony or Mike who wrote the words in that I think!)

I think every Genesis lp has some real FILLER on it, however.

    Deku Scrub

Dumpy Goodness Agreed, though as for filler I don’t think it’s wise to trim the fat off in prog, it’s better there than not at all in my opinion

I’ve come to really like The Cinema Show’s first half, dancing with the moonlit knight is a great one on that album too

    Stephen Lisson

They had so many great tunes, even after Peter left. One for the Vine and Mad Mad Moon are just a couple of those songs. I can't pick my favourite because they had so many.

  31. josé augusto de oliveira amorim

    6:56 I know what I like chords

  32. Maynard G. Krebs

I know this is a "NO shit !!" moment for you but Tony Banks is a genius....his keyboard work is off the scale brilliant...

    Dumpy Goodness

TONY deserves to be in 2nd Place for "Greatest Rock keyboardist" AFTER Keith Emerson. Rick Wakemen of YES always gets 2nd place, but 99% of his output is junk, even he says that, and even Bruford said RW was very limited musicially. Fast and showy, but mostly meh. TONY BANKS has created zillions of devastating chord changes or melodies! And some killer chops at times.

    Stephen Lisson

@Dumpy Goodness Keith gets my vote as well. Tony is a close second. Michael Pinder would be the other one......Moody Blues.

  33. Tony Maika

To my mind the first "Genesis song."

  34. tw_ games

    perfeição !!!

  35. Raoni Mauro Peres

    The best song ever.

  36. Age Groot

One of the best of the great Genesis catalogue. Not a single moment boring.

  37. Tim

6:55 Kakrioko Village from Zelda? Another prog song that Koji Kondo was inspired by?

  38. MyNameisBritannia

Pure beauty, magical melodies, arresting instrumentation, heavenly voice... true progressive song...

  39. Joey Zozo

    children made this.. unbelievable talents

  40. F. Hieronymus

This theme reminds me of my beautiful Lucia, whom I will love forever.

  41. kr wilson

    stagnation. gabriels best vocal

  42. Pika InParis

I always feel like this song is forshadowing Supper's Ready (also first time I realize how the part after the first verse sounds a bit like Entangled)

  43. Trespasser

Anthony's gentle touch in this song is sublime. As it is throughout the record.

  44. Kelvyn De Araujo

6:55 The iconic section of live versions of I Know What I Like.....badass

  46. Juan Jose Viadero Rivas

    Qué belleza de música!!!

  47. jay 67

    2018 still lov this song

  48. Space Bender

I love this song and this whole album, the artwork is also fantastic. Love that knife drug across the cover.

    kr wilson

seems if you search, the names of all the songs are incorporated into the artwork. the angel lower left the couple on right; looking for someone etc
the time of day; dusk. white mountain in backround

    Miyuki Shijisha

This and Dusk....so much better than anything our Pop hero Collin's attempted, only destroying the band.

    cat jrg

    @Miyuki Shijisha 4real,dude!!

  49. JP P

I used to have those Tibetan bells on 1:39... how I missed them and regret to have given them away... for good? perhaps.

  50. Bernard Knight

Still my favourite genesis track. Takes me back to Cape Town.

  51. oldjack1754

After repeated listens I wonder: is that Ant Phillips on the vocal at 5:10? The tone and enunciation sound very close to his speaking voice.

    MyNameisBritannia

    No, it's Peter.

    gary vevang

    Sounds exactly like Peter

  52. Alex Haynes

From 6:55 - 8:47, the absolute BEST section of the song!

    Tim

    Kakrioko Village from Zelda

  53. Dennis Benzle

the world died and gave birth to childish gangster rap and meth long live Genesis

  54. José López

El único monstruo y maestro es Peter Gabriel...el pelao Collins solo en la bateria está bien

    Anki Hansen

    José López No

    Jony Juarez

José López Los 2 son buenos. Pero el genesis de Gabriel es mejor

  55. Emily songs

This record improves with the years,
every time I appreciate more and more the Anthony Phillips guitar :)

  56. Daniella Valadez

This song's about Gollum from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings!

    Anki Hansen

Daniella Valadez How? This song is about the last survivor of a nuclear war, don't believe everything the Rolling Stone magazine throws at you.

    Anki Hansen

@Matthew Capobianco So? That doesn't mean it's about Gollum

  57. Mr Basil

Quite simply a great track. And they were so young!

  58. barefoot191

    a fucking masterpiece!

  59. Thomas Taylor

one of my favorites from the Peter era

  60. genesis0932

5:55 is what Banks and Gabriel and Rutherford all are about.

    Trespasser

Ant is sublime on this record. And Peter also. Tony is not overpowering which for this
one, is a good thing. Makes for such a cohesive sound and gentle atmosphere.

    Anki Hansen

@umpy Goodness Keith Emerson goes more keyboard wankery. Tony Banks actually has a lot of sensibility. Please don't compare a robot with a human with emotions.

    umpy Goodness

@Anki Hansen Sounds to me like you have NOT YET listened to all of ELP's first 5 albums, or THE NICE either.

Meanwhile... YES, sometimes KE is a wanker (but you could say that about every musician on earth, except me)..... but he's got zillions of great things that are NOT showing off.

And he's very very DIVERSE, unlike Wakeman's limited palatte of colors and sounds and rhythms, which was my point.

    Doug Drazga

@Trespasser For sure. They never did anything else that sounds quite like this. By the way, did they use a different vocal take for the remaster? It sounds different than I remember.

    Stephen Lisson

@umpy Goodness Rick wasn't even the third or fourth best. Michael Pinder from Moody Blues was better than Rick. So you're right with your comment

  61. genesis0932

If Peter plays this on this tour in 2016 there will be a maelstrom for weeks in the streets.

  73. rubens gonzales

  74. Mick Lomax

I heard the remastered version of this, but the original is far better... Sometimes remasters can be hit or miss depending on how it's done. Great song from a cracking album. And I still like the debut album FGTR, as we see the beginnings of what was to come... As for Phil Collins not bringing anything to prog rock, then some need their ears testing... Phil's amazing drumming brought plenty of prog atmosphere on pieces such as Watcher Of The Skies and the epic Supper's Ready.... Times changed and the 80s came along, but there were still great musical pieces from the band. I can actualyl picture Peter Gabriel singing Mama, as that is fairly up his street :-)

    genesis0932

Phil is a monster. Couldn't agree more on hearing Peter sing Mama. That would be mindblowing. Earthquakes would happen.

    genesis0932

This is a thread for Trespass. Phil didn't play on Trespass.

    onsese joo

I know this was three years ago..But as you mention Phil Collins, then I think it is rather fair to say that Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill is on the same waters as Follow You Follow Me. :)

    julio barboza

Phil Collins rules... don't forget Brand X

    David Papitto

The drums are spot-on though. Genesis had a surfeit of drums.

  75. Miyuki Shijisha

A great band spoilt finally by a certain Mr.Collins...who somehow changed them from a progessive band to a POP band...

    Lenny Giardino

This topic has been covered a thousand times. Go back under your rock and enjoy your prog

    Bobby Willis

Miyuki Shijisha no he didn’t, he only took Peters place. Mike and Tony changed the band. Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett left on their own, phil Collins didn’t ruin anything.

    indy_go_blue60

As much as I like early Genesis, prog rock was dying in the late 70s- early 80s, unfortunately. If Genesis had stayed with this kind of music, they might have had one, maybe two more albums and died. Though I don't like a whole lot of the Collins-Banks-Rutherford era, there're still some gems out there worth listening to. But Gabriel left on his own, Phil sure as hell didn't push him out.

    Stephen Lisson

@Miyuki Shijisha Yes you are right there. Carl Palmer was heavily influenced by Gene and as far as I am concerned, Carl was the greatest rock drummer of all time.

  76. Chi-Ya_Ni _._

Who is singing at the end?

    Black Cap Baron

I think it is all of them singing. Or a least Peter, Tony, and Mike. Maybe Ant too. I hear a lot of Tony in the end though. His voice seems to come through on songs like this and Dusk as well.

  77. gresach

what a great song - title is weak though. call it something like "bitter minnows".

    ghostship85

gresach would never waste a second trying to achieve a better title to this surreal song. Bitter Minnows is pretty darn funny though!

  78. Andre Alcantara

    Sublime!

    Mavaffanculo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Will B

@ghostship85 You don't get to write complex music by getting stoned. Especially smoking weed. Much like people thought Zappa could only write his material via drugs of some kind. But it's way to difficult to play!~ They were artists from the get go it's called talent. All of them.

    cat jrg

even musically;kids were diff back then!!'such accomplishment...

    Louise X

Couldn't agree more, their skill and precision as songwriters and musicians, even here, were astonishing for a bunch of 19-20-year olds. And Peter Gabriel's vocals are addictive even here, so early.

    BandfromtheBand

I know! They were so young but were composing music this complex, intense, dynamic and beautiful. How does this kind of thing "just happen?"
