I had the honor of working with Genesis & Pink Floyd as a free-lance photographer for almost 30 years. I would never exchange the experience that I was allowed by either band for any amount of money! They were (and are) the best!!!!!!

After Gabriel left, Genesis auditioned many singers. Phil sang the songs for the 'auditioners', but few could grasp the feel. After a while they all realized... Phil, YOU are the singer to fill the void! Or so the tale is told. Good choice.

What a creepy piece. I listen to it today after some time, and it still causes me goose bumps. Sublime artists. Music that seems to have fallen from the sky, in a psychedelic and Medieval mix. It makes me so beautiful.

My sister and her husband recently lost a baby preterm. I don't know why but this reminded me of the event. I just shut down in a pool of tears. It really struck a nerve. What an incredible song.

Happy to see this song enjoyed so. When I put this album to the needle in the mid-70's, all my friends would simply roll their eyes. I've been right all these decades. haha

The 70's were the best !!

There was a one off show when Peter returned. I believe in New York. 80-81? And I've often wondered what it would sound like if Peter sang this song live. Just saying....there is a bootleg audio of them doing all the songs from their early albums together.

And I saw them at the cowshed in 1976!

I've been listening to Genesis since the early seventies and always loved this song, just incomparable.

Phil Collins, one of the most talented artists to ever live! Can play killer drums and sing simultaneously. As a musician, I know how hard this is. Phil lives on!

The music is great; not so great on the lyrics for the chorus, but the rest of them are wonderful.

genesis lost their strorytelling when peter left.

A Trick of the Tail was a superb album, Entangled and Ripples were, for me, two of the finest works the band ever produced. And the older I get, the more I think Peter's input wasn't so great after all. Listen to Carpet Crawl, it's too beautiful a song to have lyrics about fleas. That's one song I wish Phil had written the lyrics to.

What an aural delight this is.

One of their Songs with the best crescendo. And it´s pure Poetry.

Steve does make his guitar sing during the solo part.

This was my sisters favorite song she confided in me before she lost her battle with non Hodgkin lymphoma...diagnosed at age 28 she won the first battle...came back again at age 42 with a vengeance..to much for her to handle..as I listen to the lyrics my eyes always fill with tears..the last time she’ll look like today meaning meaning her face would be swollen one day from chemo and a couple days later it would be back to normal...hair fell out in clumps..always changing...she has gone to the other side.....

I lost my grandparents and my parents to cancer. My brother n sister have both battled cancer. I'm so grateful to have been apart of their lives. Listening to music brings me closer to them. Keep listening.

Still got this brilliant album hidden away somewhere in my 70’s collection an era never to be repeated.Fabulous bands and even better times growing up in Louth Lincolnshire.

I'm such a sap. I'm 63 years old and I have tears listening to this great song. I cry over sad movies and TV shows, but most of all, over great songs and great bands I grew up with. This song and Genesis brings back so many fond memories of my teen days.

Alors je ne peux dire quelle chanson de GENESIS je préfère je les aime toutes depuis l'époque de peter gabriel puis phil collins ainsi que l'unique album auquel ray wilson a participé

The album that started Phil on the path to superstardom. At the time his vocals were a revelation, and opened the door for many women to start liking
Genesis. In fact I remember my then girlfriend, who wasn't too impressed with the PG Genesis. "Too weird" she said. Then I put this on, and it was like "wow, who is this?". Marriage and three kids later, old Phil sure has a lot to answer for......lol!

This was before the "oversinging" Phil. Just perfect for these songs.

Very sad but very true to life

Picked this beautiful song to be played at my sons funeral two years ago. Just no words because it hits your soul.

If it sounds good, I can reallly like it. Nobody choses what I like, I do and although this song is seven years older than me, I love it.

I cant imagine Peter Gabriel singing this......and I bet he would agree ...

I don’t know about that. He may agree that Collins has a more melodic tone but Gabriel’s style of story telling would definitely pull it off. Just my opinion but listen to both versions of Carpet Crawlers from Peter and Phil and I would prefer that of Peter’s. Both have great harmonies together though.

70's Mozarts end of!!

Are there any younger people out there who have stumbled upon this and thought "WOW!"? Just the curiosity of an old-timer.

Sadly not.... I'm English & have loved music for probably 57 of my 57 years but even with my 18 year old son.... I just haven't introduced him to bands like this & *Genesis* in particular. I really don't know why? Although I was all over the band from the age of 14 or 15, they were different times & this was the music of my time. Maybe the possible rejection by him would be too much, maybe I'm just tired of trying to get people to listen to (What I consider) the good stuff...

He get s a lot of the good stuff from back in the day & came with me & greatly enjoyed a 10cc concert but this is just too close to my heart & runs through my soul, it *IS* me!....

For me the instrumental section is the crowning glory of 70s progressive rock.

I lived in some projects here in Quebec when I was a kid. Grew up in a disgusting home: Sexually molested at 4 then 9 to 11. Beaten repeatedly, choked, hit strangled, my sister murdered at 19 shot in the face. I learned to bike at 11 at 15 I was cycling about 40-60 kms a day, got out of my neighbourhood, listened to kick ass music that transported me, this was one of the cassettes I wore out. Might be responsible in part for keeping me alive. Going through tough times now at 48, painful to hear this melody. Maybe I will close the book and gracefully decline.

*Bro!* as long as we have this & music like it running through our souls our time on this mortal coil will not be wasted! For everyone who loves this, but doesn't know a lot of other 70s Genesis, try "Entangled" from the same LP. Click on that video. "Entangled" might actually be even more beautiful than "Ripples", I can't decide.

This is album that started it for me. Never heard of them before. Decided to go to the this concert in 1976 and a couple of days later bought the album and never looked back since. Just love it and many many more. Never get tired of this. Never. Thank you Genesis. 👍
