Genesis - Paperlate Lyrics

Paperlate paperlate
Paperlate paperlate

Paperlate, oh I'm sorry but there is no one on the line
Paperlate, oh I'm sorry but rest easy no news is good news

Ooh it's too easy to live like clockwork
Tick tock watching the world go by
Any change would take too long
So dry your eyes
Ooh it's too easy to live in a cold sweat
Just sitting dripping in pools below
You can wipe your face
Kill the pain
But the fever won't go, no no

Paperlate
Pull it together now
Put your feet back on the ground
Paperlate
Ooh don't worry now
You're not alone
Look around you
Paperlate
Ooh I'm sorry but there's no one on the line
Paperlate
Ooh I'm sorry but rest easy no news is good news

Ooh it's too easy to compute your future
Taking no risks and playing too safe
Any change would take too long
So dry your eyes
Ooh it's too easy to talk about rocking the boat
Making changes and changing track
But you'd better not lock that door
Cos you'll be coming back

Ah you're breathing faster
Silence the only sound
There's no need to be nice on the way up
Cos you're not coming down

Paperlate paperlate
Paperlate paperlate
Paperlate paperlate
Paperlate paperlate

Paperlate
Ooh I'm sorry but there's no one on the line
Paperlate
Oh I'm sorry but rest easy no news is good news...

  8. C.... O....

I don’t get the Phil Collins backlash these days. Are these just young generation who grew up after Genesis or the older generation trying to be cool hatin on the past?

  9. J.... S....

Lawsuit kickoff started yesterday. Told VEVO 6 years ago my Kimberly Longman channel can be used for court purposes. I do not know when or where they will need me to testify against Del Norte County and Crescent City Ca relay the message now.

Easily as good as Earth Wind & Fire's best. As was Phil's whole career. Sooooo taken for granted. Deserves Hall of Fame as much as any musician.

Corey Levi it’s the same horn players as EW&F

  13. P.... ....

The title came from a line in the 1973 Genesis song "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" ("Paper late, cried a voice in the crowd"), which Genesis rehearsed at a soundcheck, leading to the conception of the song. "Paperlate" is one of two Genesis songs that features the Earth, Wind & Fire horn section, the other being "No Reply at All", also from the Abacab sessions.[1] Collins has often hired the group for other projects, including his debut solo album, Face Value.[2] A music video was also created, utilising the band's 27 May 1982 appearance on Top of the Pops.[3]

Rutherford is so versatile, playing guitar or bass depending on the needs of the song. That's just nuts.

LMAO That look he gives at 2:05-Hey did anyone just see me, almost not get my mouth over to the mic on time during the lyp-sync? LOL

  21. D.... R....

What a classic. When the remastered version of Three Sides Live came out back in the day (two discs!), someone really dropped the ball by omitting "Paperlate". What were they thinking?

  22. J.... S....

Great song for the Del Norte Triplicate. :)) This video just got ruined

  23. G.... A....

    Can’t stop moving.

  24. g.... ....

People below saying its staged etc. Well, that's a pretty good staged performance no? Don't think he would have any problem singing and playing the drums. A real musician. Today's artists are just singers. Back then they were singers who could play instruments and write songs.

  25. t.... ....

    GOD I LOVE THESE GUYS.

  26. J.... R....

Phil Collins is in my opinion is very talented and one of the best musicians ever!

I was born in 1982 and I’ve been listening to Genesis these days and I’m just amazed at the talent. It’s true like others post here. There’s nothing like this anymore coming out these days.

I am an “old-Genesis” fan. But late in the Nineties, in the middle of my divorce, I bought “Three  Sides Live”: half drunk, crying of sadness lying in the carpet, after college, late at night, I would wake up listening to this song and others of the same Genesis' period of time.  These songs gave me new optimism to face my future: thanks a million, Genesis!

Phil should've left You Can't Hurry Love to the Supremes or the Pips or whomever first recorded it. This song is the only good one that Genesis recorded. He also ruined the Live Aid reunion of Led Zeppelin July 13, 1985.

  52. J.... H....

    great song.

    could never fathom that one.

  76. R.... T....

    Great tune.

  77. Z.... R....

Phil should have drummed and sang together more often. Even though this is lip synced, but the presentation is more interesting.

  78. J.... B....

Great song, could have very well been a Chicago song. Great horns.

    J.... B....

Earth, Wind, and Fire provided the horns on this and No Reply At All.

    J.... B....

I thought it was a Chicago! I can't tell the difference between them two!

  79. k.... l....

    GREAT SONG!!

  80. M.... D....

Definitely the studio version over dubbed. There isn't even anyone playing bass guitar...Nonetheless, most excellent song!

  81. C.... G....

This song and "I missed again, and "No Reply at All", killer horns and driving beat.

    C.... G....

You sir are correct like a sumbitch!!

  82. S.... ....

What's up with "Paperlate"? I've never heard that phrase before until this song and Selling England by the Pound.

    S.... ....

Yeah, the term hear is Phil ripping off an idea of Gabriel's. Again.

    S.... ....

    +Rodzilla~~~ OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH?

    S.... ....

    @Emmanuelle Rodriguez
Where do I "get my bs?" Listening to Genesis for 40 years.

But opinions are pointless: they are subjective. The reality is that Phil was playing with Gabriel's "paperlate" line from "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight," a concert staples for years. Collins, after all, followed Gabriel as lead vocalist for Genesis after Gabriel left. The playing with the word "Paperlate" led to a new melody and song. I'd think it would be obvious that the core idea came from the earlier song. "Paperlate" is hardly a common phrase.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paperlate

Don't worry, you don't need to apologize either for being wrong or for acting like an asshole.

    S.... ....

Rodzilla you mean that a band recycled an idea that they probably came up with together and made it better.well fuck me dead what a bunch of dickheads.

  83. c.... ....

Reminds me of my junior high year at high school in 1982 in Dr. Patnode's American Literature class. Needless to say my paper was late. RIP Dr. Patnode. One great teacher but one bad boxer. He had his nose broken 11 times.

    c.... ....

+cmtmj2006 omg....you are the same age as me. this song is so cool. god bless your teacher. everyone is good at something....boxing wasn't your teacher's area of expertise. i woulda quit after my nose being broken after the fifth time. i salute him for forging forward. always remember this japanese proverb..."fall seven times, stand eight"

  84. G.... M....

I never knew there was an album called 3x3. I always thought it was only from the Three Sides Live album.

    G.... M....

Yeah, you know what Side 4 of the UK version of "Three Sides Live" by now is, don't you?

  85. D.... W....

Our newspaper comes 'late' on Fri. mornin's.

  86. K.... H....

Phil Collins is gorgeous in this vid

    K.... H....

Critics had always made fun of his looks.

    K.... H....

I think he is so very handsome and his voice and multiple talents make him even more so! Critics don’t speak for most of us! So he’s not the typical “tall, dark, and handsome” he is handsome! Phil Collins used his God-given talents to best of his ability and we were the beneficiaries! Thank you Phil!

    K.... H....

Deca Cards52 I can definitely see why. I'm not quite sure what anyone else sees, but he's quite possibly uglier than Woody Allen.

  87. L.... V....

Una de mis favoritas en mi epoca del colegio 80's

  88. J.... B....

Paper Sun - Paperlate is a UK term for an afternoon edition of a daily newspaper.  The equivalent of an "Extra" edition in the U.S.  The use of the word in the Dance with the Moonlit Knight lyric is exactly that, a paperboy yelling "Paperlate" instead of "Extra, Extra"  Not sure how the newspaper reference fits into the lyric of this song...

    J.... B....

@James Bernheimer I had read years ago that this song started out as a sound check before a show when Collins sang the word "paperlate" from "dancing with the moonlit knight" repeatedly into the mike and started to change it around... that having been said, the word "paperlate" in the context of the song probably has little meaning.

  89. P.... S....

Does the title come from the earlier song, Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, I wonder? "Paper late! Cried a voice in the crowd" or something?

    P.... S....

    Yes it does

    P.... S....

Yes. Phil borrowing throwaway ideas of Peter's again.

    P.... S....

    Paper Sun Yes.

    P.... S....

Rodzilla phil wrote neither song, dick

    P.... S....

    It seems that Tony, during a recording session, was very fed up with Phil who was saying that word, "Paperlate" again and again, trying to record or just proving "Dance with the Moonlit Knights";
So Tony decide to create a simple melody and a simple text based on that word, and this song came out :)

  90. J.... P....

There's a mash up of this vocal track and Rick Astley's "Together Forever" instrumental here on YT! Awesome combo there! What does "paperlate" mean anyway?

    J.... P....

It is a UK term for a special, late edition of a daily newspaper.  The UK equivalent of an "Extra" in the U.S.

    J.... P....

    Thanks!

    J.... P....

@Jennifer Pruitt Hi jean. nice to see you round here..! Im a Johnny Crawford s friend... I ll search for the Rick astley s mash-up...

  92. l.... m....

good song  it brings back memories  - but odd tittle  very odd

  93. W.... ....

Back when good music still existed.

    W.... ....

@Bruce K Evans We could go on with that one forever. At 57 years old, I've had to live through a lot of it. I think it's mostly not being made. To some degree, rock is "written out." So I was in my early 20's when this was out, entirely different means of accessing music then,i

    W.... ....

Good music is still being made, by the same ones who made good music back then!

    W.... ....

Eh, there was plenty of crap in the Good Old Days, too. We just don't listen to it anymore.

    W.... ....

@TheSanityInspector exactly. Like Brian Adams was just pure cheese

    W.... ....

    @Walter Pewenim57

  94. B.... ....

How the hell do you sing like that , and keep the beat , and then give 'rolls' all simultaneousy !?!

    B.... ....

Everything Larry Coffin said is spot-on...I would add from my experience that rhythm guitar is easiest to play while singing, then drums, while bass is the most difficult.

    B.... ....

@Joey Reyes I would say the drums are harder simply because it involves more moving around while trying to keep your head directly at the mike. You aren't reaching and straining physically with a stringed instrument as much as you do with percussions.

    B.... ....

woogie88888 I play all three so I know from experience...for me, bass is the hardest to do if the song is more than just whole notes.

    B.... ....

@Joey Reyes Sounds like you are a musician and I'm not so I will take your word for it. I just thought that trying to keep your voice even while moving around to different drums and still keep your head at the mike would be a hard trick. Oh and Geddy Lee is the greatest bass player ever. Be fun to see the reply to that one. lol

    B.... ....

@BuddyAckerman1 - Top of the Pops was a weekly TV show than ran on the BBC network in England, from 1964 until 2006. They would play a few promotional videos on the show, but the majority of the music was performed by the bands themselves in front of a live studio audience. However, the show was known for its lip syncing during those 'Live' performances. The Genesis performance here is typical of the show - where it had probably been rehearsed several times beforehand.

  95. c.... ....

    uplifting

  96. B.... G....

Paper Plate, Paper Plate... I'm sorry but, there's no one on the line. LOL - Just messin'.  Love this Genesis tune. Thanks for sharing it, TheRipples70.  :-)

I thought it was/is "Labor Day, Labor Dayee. I'm sorry, Bud. There's no one at work, tonight." I read that, somewhere, else. No copyright infringement, intended.
