I am an “old-Genesis” fan. But late in the Nineties, in the middle of my divorce, I bought “Three  Sides Live”: half drunk, crying of sadness lying in the carpet, after college, late at night, I would wake up listening to this song and others of the same Genesis' period of time.  These songs gave me new optimism to face my future: thanks a million, Genesis!

Phil should've left You Can't Hurry Love to the Supremes or the Pips or whomever first recorded it. This song is the only good one that Genesis recorded. He also ruined the Live Aid reunion of Led Zeppelin July 13, 1985.

There’s plenty of good music! Big Big Train, Frost*, Glass Hammer, Devin Townsend, any of John Mitchell’s projects, and so on. It takes some looking to find good stuff but it’s worth it!

Where do I "get my bs?" Listening to Genesis for 40 years.

But opinions are pointless: they are subjective. The reality is that Phil was playing with Gabriel's "paperlate" line from "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight," a concert staples for years. Collins, after all, followed Gabriel as lead vocalist for Genesis after Gabriel left. The playing with the word "Paperlate" led to a new melody and song. I'd think it would be obvious that the core idea came from the earlier song. "Paperlate" is hardly a common phrase.

Paper Sun - Paperlate is a UK term for an afternoon edition of a daily newspaper.  The equivalent of an "Extra" edition in the U.S.  The use of the word in the Dance with the Moonlit Knight lyric is exactly that, a paperboy yelling "Paperlate" instead of "Extra, Extra"  Not sure how the newspaper reference fits into the lyric of this song...

@James Bernheimer I had read years ago that this song started out as a sound check before a show when Collins sang the word "paperlate" from "dancing with the moonlit knight" repeatedly into the mike and started to change it around... that having been said, the word "paperlate" in the context of the song probably has little meaning.

It seems that Tony, during a recording session, was very fed up with Phil who was saying that word, "Paperlate" again and again, trying to record or just proving "Dance with the Moonlit Knights";
So Tony decide to create a simple melody and a simple text based on that word, and this song came out :)

It is a UK term for a special, late edition of a daily newspaper.  The UK equivalent of an "Extra" in the U.S.

Everything Larry Coffin said is spot-on...I would add from my experience that rhythm guitar is easiest to play while singing, then drums, while bass is the most difficult.

@Joey Reyes I would say the drums are harder simply because it involves more moving around while trying to keep your head directly at the mike. You aren't reaching and straining physically with a stringed instrument as much as you do with percussions.

woogie88888 I play all three so I know from experience...for me, bass is the hardest to do if the song is more than just whole notes.

@Joey Reyes Sounds like you are a musician and I'm not so I will take your word for it. I just thought that trying to keep your voice even while moving around to different drums and still keep your head at the mike would be a hard trick. Oh and Geddy Lee is the greatest bass player ever. Be fun to see the reply to that one. lol

@BuddyAckerman1 - Top of the Pops was a weekly TV show than ran on the BBC network in England, from 1964 until 2006. They would play a few promotional videos on the show, but the majority of the music was performed by the bands themselves in front of a live studio audience. However, the show was known for its lip syncing during those 'Live' performances. The Genesis performance here is typical of the show - where it had probably been rehearsed several times beforehand.
