Genesis - Open Door Lyrics

I see your smiling face, by the open door
There's the morning light
Shining in your hair, and in your eyes

And just a little way behind that smile of yours
I see another one, oh so far away
If only for one second, I could hold you close to me
When the Master calls for me again
There's nothing I can say, or I can do

Goodbye, my love
Time has come to say farewell
I hear the call again
Goodbye to the world
I've sheltered for so long
Oh there's so much my love, that I can never say

And in a little while, in a little while
There's nothing left to see

As the years go by and I have not returned
And the night has come, falling all around
Ooh if you count the stars you'll know
How many have gone out
And when the Master calls for me again
There's nothing that I can say
Or I can do

Stand in the sun
Shut your eyes and feel the world
It's changing every day
Goodbye my love
Each day will seem so long
Ooh there's so much I feel, that I can never say

I can't see you
I can't feel you anymore
I've just a memory of that open door

A little influenced by "Lost time in Cordoba" (Hackett) mirrors "Alone tonite" definitely duke-ish.

Open door has always been a favorite of mine! It's a sad song. Genesis has been my favorite band since I was in high school!!

  8. Mirjan kranenburg

The most beautiful song I ever heard! It comes right into my heart, so tender, fragile.Goosebumps.
About 5 years ago I heard a song of Genesis, Your own special way, since then I'm a huge fan. Can someone tell me something about this song? What does it mean, who wrote it, that sort of things. Excuse me for my English ;)

    Robert Kekuna

Mirjan kranenburg Your English is fine. This song is not on the "regular," studio albums. It is on the album "Three Sides Live," (which included some studio songs not on the other albums). It was written by guitarist/bassist Mike Rutherford. I think it is about a man who is about to die, and he sees a memory of his love at an open door. He sees a smile behind hers, which I take to be an angel. The Master is God, who is calling for him to come to heaven. Before he goes he wishes that, despite his death, she continue to experience life. Then he dies with his last thought of her at the open door. This song is unusual in that there are no drums. To me, in some ways this song reminds me of "Snowbound" from the ". . . And Then There Were Three" album. Rutherford wrote that, too, and it also deals with death.

    Mirjan kranenburg

@Robert Kekuna Thank you so much for your answer, I think you're right with your explanation. Beautiful song also for a funeral, but I hope that is still far away :) I shall listen to Snowbound, never heard of it. Do you also like Genesis?

    Robert Kekuna

@Mirjan kranenburg If I didn't like Genesis I would not have commented lol. I may have mistaken something: the last line of the song is that he will only be a memory once he is gone. I usually know the answer to any Genesis question. Cheers!

    funklover24

    @Robert Kekuna great explanation, thanks.

This song is great and yet I can’t think of a song it could’ve replaced on duke. Maybe man of our times but I could understand keeping that because it’s one of the up songs. Regardless the duke sessions was their strongest under the Phil umbrella. Just greatness

    Robert Kekuna

crashintonickdm Problem is that it belongs at the end of an album, but Duke already has a fantastic finish. Three. Sides Live put it at the end of the album; perfect.

"Stand in the sun, shut your eyes and feel the world, it's changing every day."
I do this far too often, with these lyrics in my head.

  15. Erich Groat

I can imagine this as a (pre-)Trespass piece too.

  16. Randall Genshaw

Loved phil Collins,he was perfect for genesis when Peter Gabriel left the band. Phil Collins was Genesis. Thank you Phil for all the great music. Your music lives on...🎸🎷🎼

  17. Amy Rosenfeld

i totally forgot about this one... i know the words so i must've heard it! where though???

  18. Ricardo Martinez

One of Genesis' delightful introverted moments, from an introverted culture, Great Britain, within a most extraverted, and crazed, world.  Genesis is British as it can be, "Good by my love," what a great nation can produce musicians like these.

  19. George Toth

I think you mean "Rutherford at his heart wrenching indulgent worst". Since he was the guy who wrote the song? Or are you just burping up cliches about how Collins destroyed the band?

  38. flinx &pip

Genesis made a lot of their hits by accident. They also dropped a lot of their accidents. This song Open Door, was a dropped accident. Mama was also a song they didn't want to have on their album, as well as tonight tonight tonight

    ALEJANDRO DE LA CRUZ

+flinx &pip Maybe you born by accident

    flinx &pip

+ALEJANDRO DE LA CRUZ  I was paying Genesis respect. It's hard to have a hit song and it just seemed so easy for them, that it could be perceived as accidental...I love genesis

    Sonny Nicks

To me this song is a memory of 1981. A Friend recorded a tape with different kind of music back than and gave it to me like a little gift. Now I just have seen a picture somebody posted (Fb) witch remind me on this old Genesis song here. This one and some more songs of "Three Sides Out" made me baying the album and turned me to a big Genesis Fan (1981). The reason why I´m writing this is, once before after watching some old music videos of Genesis and seen how Phil turned to Collins, I start wondering a bit. The question I asked myself is, how was it possible for Collins to still make that much money with Genesis after Gabriel and Hackett left the band? I figured like, who knows, maybe he made a pact with the devil back than.... And in light of this it make sins what you are saying about those hits by accident. Or Collins, Banks and Rutherford were born in mind to be overwhelmed with big ass luck in there lives. That means, all three of them are" Goldmary´s!" I´mma share this little song now in a comment below the pic. Mit freundlichen Grüßen from Germany

Amo questa canzone legata a uno dei momenti più tristi della mia vita. Io mi voltai per non veder uscire dalla porta aperta C.N. insieme alla mia prima giovinezza. Per fortuna ne ho avuta una seconda.

  41. TRKillShot

Sounds very similar to Alone Tonight imo

    progtoeternity

+TRKillShot True ! but the sound mix is not as "80's" here.... Less commercial... Better !

    Geoffrey Jonathan Wilson

Yes,it does sound like Alone Tonight.'Duke' was recorded
    in Autumn '79.

    Geoffrey Jonathan Wilson

And I think Tony's first solo album was recorded in '79 ?

  42. MrAlbertrock

Hablemos claro, si Genesis siguió adelante gracias a Collins, Banks, Rutherford y Hackett. Gabriel se hizo del rogar hasta ahora ya basta¡¡¡

  43. Lilly Doye

I would happily buy an album made up of all the B sides that didn't quite make the cut. Someone make it happen!

    FekLeyrTarg's Videos

+Samuel Doye Both Archive Boxsets and the Album boxsets' bonus discs feature B-Sides. However, many B-Sides haven't been re-released since their first released, most notably CAS B-Sides like "Phret" or "7/8".
So an album featuring all the B-Sides would be nice indeed.

    Toolpusher

+FekLeyrTarg's Videos I'd happily buy that.

    Steve Smith

As well as the Archive sets you can buy quality FLAC downloads of individual tracks at Qobuz

    Leandro Jorge Zarlenga

I've already done it for myself!

    Michael Anthony

@Leandro Jorge Zarlenga selling copies? hehe

  44. John Desmond

Sorry, TSL's UK pressing had three extra live tracks on Side Four.

  45. John Desmond

That's essentially what Bsides are, throwaways, and sometimes they end up being better than the album tracks. As for Three Sides Live, the UK copies of that had three live tracks and were the only nationality of pressing to do so at its time of release. I don't know if that's changed though.

  46. Rezz Atrana

This song should've been on Duke instead of Alone Tonight.
Just as much Evidence of Autumn should've been on Duke instead of Misunderstanding.
The thing is I think the members of Genesis knew this all too well. But they wanted something different, like they continued to do on Abacab even more.

Now there's nothing against trying something different, but could'nt they've waited one more album...?
Duke would've been so much better, complete in sound. While it's already a very good album.

I guess we will never know.

    Joey Zozo

@Brandon LaRocque i agree. i understand this song is as much in the Duke aesthetic as the official album tracks, but im shocked to see that people dislike Alone Tonight, Please Dont Ask, Misunderstanding.. those are the HIGHLIGHTS of the album to me. The rest sounds more like this song: sweet, ambient filler...

    Pete S.

Yeah, we got "Whodunnit?" instead of "You Might Recall". Wd was novel in 1981 but the novelty very quickly wore off. YMR had a much more solid foundation.

    Keith F

I agree with you. I've been a huge Genesis fan for 45 years, but m ashamed to say that only recently have I become aware of the B-sides 'Evidence of Autumn' and 'Open Door'. Both are stunningly beautiful pieces of music that would gave graced the Duke album, which in my view is the finest post-Hackett album the band released. Thankyou to whoever uploaded these two great songs

    Steven Haywood

Brandon LaRocque , how about a CD edition of Duke as it is with the edition of this song and Evidence of Autumn?

  50. beka gogsadze

genesis golden era was from 1970 to 1974

    Bruno Cisi

@Matt Ledonne Yes! I love each album, all of them. But Calling All The Stations is not good for me, I think Banks and Rutherford were not well focus on Genesis due to theirs solo carriers and the voice of the man singing (I don't know his name) doesnt fit in Genesis. Not a good album if you ask me. The rest is pure gold as you said.

    mozzevel

+beka gogsadze О вкусах не спорят, на мой взгляд - весь Genesis хорош, кроме 1992г. Tastes differ... For me, all the Genesis is splendid except 1992-LP...

    durban

Except I'd include '71. "Nursery Cryme" certainly deserves a place in the inner circle of the best Genesis albums. Yes, the new fivesome was just coming into its stride as a unit at that point, but NC is no less a great prog, a great rock album. It's my fourth favorite G. album.

    progtoeternity

beka gogsadze This is then silver era

    Starblaster77

You're missing out on some beautiful music.

  51. Scroblene

This such a beautiful song, and like Vancouver, has some of the original magic of the very early Genesis songs.

The chords before the middle eights(?), are so reminiscent of the Banks/Hackett style. Dear old Phil Collins, his live acts were all so well presented and exciting!

  52. Dave Moishe

This is a fantastic song. I think it is as good as any track on Duke. I can only think it was not included, as it is similar to 'Alone Tonight'. The album is also very ballad heavy (a good thing!!) However, I think it is superior to 'please don't ask'.

  53. trfesok

I agree it's better than some of the songs on the album, but it's very simple arrangement doesn't really fit in with the rest. But I like this one a lot, too.

  54. progtoeternity

Dance on Evidence of Autumn ! Wow, what an odd wya of celebrating Genesis music. I would normally turn the ligt off, lay back and fly away to the sound of the melody and out of this world lyrics ! Oh well... why not !!

  55. progtoeternity

It's ok. That way, the songs don't get [email protected] by radios and end up living long.

  56. progtoeternity

so true... Despite being one of the best prog band in the world, Genesis always had a not-always-accepetd-by-all talent of uplifting our souls with beauty in their music... Very few bands managed to do this over such a long period. Plus, their songs are gems that new generations discover years after.

    funklover24

    Well said, thank you.

  57. Survivor2002

THEY may have felt that some of these songs were mere "throwaways", but too many fans - me among them - felt that the fourth side of THREE SIDES LIVE contained what was some of their best work. I hear this now, and I feel like you could drop this right into GAME OF THRONES as part of the soundtrack, and it wouldn't sound at all out of place...

    Eric Veritas Blair

Totally with you on that bro. I totally panicked when they switched to 4 sides live and the three sides went out of print. I even like "Me and Virgil" ;)

  58. bruciebonus68

me to,luv this song....makes me think of my old dog.miss him.god bless you bruce.x

  59. Chi -Iv

A wonderful song. I've got no words to describe its lyrics *____*

  60. kamwrites

Definitely a terrific song. Phil, Mike and Tony were equally good at putting emotion into their songs. Mike - Open Door, Tony - Afterglow, Phil - Please Don't Ask....and there are so many more.

  61. paulindigo

Utterly beautiful, it's a pity it didn't make it to the album and was confined to a B-side...

  62. Captain Neckbeard

I understand completely. Phil has that same trembling voice he uses on Please Don't Ask. It's so pitiful, which makes me both sad and horny at the same time.

  63. popomatic1970

This could have been used in a film soundtrack it's so epic...

    Kermit the Prog

It's perfect soundtrack music, yes! The atmosphericness of Tony's banks of keyboards (see what I did there?) are reminiscent almost of a '60's string sound too.

  64. Aggromerchant

Contemplating a song about Vancouver make me want to fall...a..slee..p...

  65. owenbb505

@RomaniXanadu can't argue that point. Everyone sees Phil and Peter as the "stars" of the band and I think die-hards focus on Tony as the real core and bearer of the "Genesis" mantle, but sometimes I don't think Mike gets enough credit (I think Steve does, but I digress.) This track and "Snowbound" are some of my favorite compostions from him for the band. The ending of this song is the most poignant for me, with Phil singing of the open door still as the song simply stops, sad & beautiful

  66. bkbeban

Only in North America was side four B side studio tracks. The rest of the world got a "4th Side Live" with One For The Vine, Fountain of the Salmacis, It and Watcher of the Skies. The 1994 remaster re-release uses this European track listing. The tracks on the US version were not released worldwide until the second 1992 box set, featuring the Phil era, came out. Here we also saw Vancouver, Nanaimo, It's Yourself etc. for the first time.

    ymmv99

Not true. Only the UK got "Three Sides Live" without the studio tracks. The rest of the world got what the album title promised: three sides with live tracks and one with studio songs.

  67. ksjoyjespeace

@FenderBender2112 Amen! well said ! This song is SO emotionally inspiring:chills, tears.and smiles because of God's wondrous LOVE thru his gifts of Music, boy Rutherford really hit a Home-run here,eh?!!

  68. arcturusvmoon

    Love this song so much

  69. Fajri Jusran

it reminds me 20 years ago ... thanks a lot for sharing this ...

  70. Andrea Mitchell

Tony Banks might have been the brains of Genesis, but Mike Rutherford (who wrote this extraordinarily beautiful track) was definitely the heart. There's such emotion in his writing.

    plasticweapon

tony had heart too. listen to "evidence of autumn" or "me and sarah jane".

  73. fabio bussotti

    A masterpiece.

  74. progtoeternity

@SPeacock Actually, that song was original on the "Three-sides Live" album when it was released in North America back in 1982. Four sides because back then, CDs did not exist !! It was strickly vinyl record (LP) or 4-track cassettes ! The album had 3 sides of (excellent) live recordings. The fourth side had 5 studio tracks: 1.Paperlate 2.You Might Recall 3.Me and Virgil 4.Evidence of Autumn 5.Open Door. A very touching track I was pleased to hear again ! Thanks for posting it

  75. SuperGrayeagle

sheer beauty, awesomely perfect! Thank you so much for sharing

  76. SDG All Day

of ANYBODY could upload or email "Evidence of Autumn" I'd be most appreciative! Miss these days when bonus cuts were the reward for supporting a single ; )

Fantastic song. Makes me smile and cry at the same time, if that's possible.

  78. aalwaps2

"Stand in the sun, shut your eyes and feel the World, it's changing every day.. Goodbye my love... " this, for me, is about knowing that you have to leave someone, someone you love, and who loves you, because you both know it has come to an end.. and you must let each other go in order to move on, and start again.. it reminds me so much of my ex wife..

@Indigite99 I'm surprised it didn't make it onto the album.

  82. Thomas Becker

  83. Stefano Pavone

@TheFilthyRags I always interpreted this song as someone dying and going to Heaven, hence the "Open Door".

  84. Ciro Di Luzio

    amazing sad song......Genesis.....for ever !!!

  85. angie gaga

  87. ksjoyjespeace

@LonesomeTroubadour it might just be!!! some other youtube song /post had one of Tony's solo songs as being Dr. Who influence, so....

  88. albertoclipper

    simply fantastic.

  89. jhillst

Lovely song, reminds me a bit of "Blood On The Rooftops" in places. Should have been on Duke in place of "Alone Tonight."

  90. hackett brian

the more you listen the more you like , superb

  91. Gerardo Coluccini

@jennmooney It talks about life (better, "lives", in the vision of oriental religions. The open door represents our lifetime, only a moment in the limitless time and space of the infinite universes (there are so many...), in which we fall in love and make experience of many things that appear to us so real...but when The Master calls for us again...we have to go, another time, another life. Still Love remains inside of us, just the memory of that open door...Excuse me because of my poor English.

  92. Robert Clary

This song reminds me of Dr.Who, there's a character called The Master in that story, but I don't think the song has any connection to the Dr.Who series.

  93. Maryanne Locke

great song from a great era.

  94. jennmooney
