Genesis - Fireside Song Lyrics

As daybreak breaks the mist upon the earth
It came to pass that beauty settled there forever more
And as the steam clings close to things to come
It came to pass that solid rock did part for humble life

Once upon a time there was confusion
Disappointment, fear and disillusion
Now there's hope reborn with every morning
See the future clearly at its dawning
Forever drifting slowly towards a hazy emptiness
Whilst water slips into the sea
The father's sad to see it's free

As shadows creep towards their master night
It came to pass that trees defied the wind who shook their leaves
And as the peace descended all around
It came to pass that nature's creatures came to face the world

Once upon a time there was confusion
Disappointment, fear and disillusion
Now there's hope reborn with every morning
See the future clearly at its dawning
Forever drifting slowly towards a hazy emptiness
Whilst water slips into the sea
The father's sad to see it's free

Once upon a time there was confusion
Disappointment, fear and disillusion
Now there's hope reborn with every morning
See the future clearly at its dawning

Once upon a time there was confusion
Disappointment, fear and disillusion

00:00 to 00:50 is 'Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling' by Herbert Howells, which they used to sing at Charterhouse school. I also learned there actually is a historical connection between Howells and Charterhouse.

No me parecía Génesis pero lo es. Raro y liviano como de Iglesia.

  3. J.... J....

this is a very beautiful song, wonderfully written

  4. D.... J....

This album just sets the stage for the Peter Gabriel and Genesis so perfectly. Their whole catalogue just forms such a beautiful and truly epic unified piece of art.

  5. D.... B....

nicr little songfellas young and innocent

  6. S.... S....

Io credo che a suo modo il tanto apprezzato sound dei Genesis si sia fatto distinguere fin da questo album e che sia riuscito in un modo o nell'altro a farsi sentire per almeno undici anni (Duke compreso).

Absolutely gorgeous. The band dislike this album.....WHY ?

    h.... ....

@Possum Ridge Entertainment This is true however in my opinion it was the right thing to do, the mono version of the album seems bland but the stereo version with the brass and strings sounds wonderful. Check out the French horn on the right channel of "Am I Very Wrong".

@Nic Adair I agree. I found a version without the brass and strings on YouTube. I don't know if it was an alternate release or an edit (with some work you can isolate and remove entire instruments without having access to the source recordings). I couldn't even listen to my favorite songs from the album on that version. I had to track down the version I had on CD (which was scratchy when I bought it second hand and lost altogether years ago) just to hear them done the right way.

I never did get into the whole "prog Genesis" vs. "pop Genesis" thing. I like nearly all of their albums, prog or pop, and the only two albums of theirs I don't like as a whole still managed to contain two of my all time favorite songs. If I would have been around in the 60s and heard the version that upset the band they would have had a loyal fan from day one. If my first exposure had been the recording with just the boys I doubt I would have even given Trespass a chance when it came out.

They don't dislike the album. By that time they were kind of pissed with Jonathan King and his efforts to make they sound like Bee Gees or whatever and it actually dropped their debut because they didn't agree with its final mix.

    h.... ....

@Ricardo Vaz Ribeiro Well, in a documentary I had on video Tony Banks said they wrote the album in kind of a Bee Gees pastiche since they wanted to catch King's attention and that's who he was into at the time.

I think their only real problem with the album was with King bringing in other musicians to "fill things out." They wanted their instruments to be the only ones on the album.

    h.... ....

@Possum Ridge Entertainment só true. They were hard work musicians and really loved to play their pieces themselves.

  10. T.... S....

  11. m.... ....

  15. G.... ....

Such a beautiful song as well as a shade of things to come.  This could almost be on Trespass.

    G.... ....

Yeah, I can see that, just take a bit of its classic rock sound away and add some vintage synth and a strong beat.

  16. G.... H....
