I played this album every night when I was just 16 yrs old in 1978 when it was released. It made me a better person listening to the lyrics especially on this song, which is so endearing.

Honestly - would that song have been released on one of the Albums before it would have gotten more credit from me. Crazy how we Judge sometimes.

I love this period of Genesis, Tony would just churn out mini-masterpiece after mini-masterpiece, this and 'One for the Vine' being right at the top of the list. Not to forget 'Undertow', criminally overlooked pop gem.

3:53 Peter and Steve had already left, but Tony is bringing them back with that (mellotron) flute followed by that enchanted guitar solo.

Great album. This was the first one from Genesis I listened to properly.
Down and out, Undertow, Snowbound, Burning Rope, Deep in the Motherlode, the Lady lies, so many great songs!

That guitar solo sends chills up my spine.People who know Genesis from Invisible touch and We can't dance (which I don't even consider Genesis)have no idea the music they used to make nor know what this great group is all about

What non-musicians do not realize is that Banks probably uses more different chord patterns on this one song then today's so called musicians, who do make it big (God only knows why, dumbing down of the people I guess who do not listen to things like this) then 99 percent of these so called musicians use their entire careers. I encourage my kids to listen to this to better understand what music is really about. Not one to three chord songs made today.

Oh yes! The "BIGGEST" song on ATTW3!!! Brilliant Tony, again, but there are a few more songs to dive into. However, seeing them perform this, twice in 1978 when I was 17 remains with me, to this day.

The part from 0:45 to about 1:20 gives me chills every time I hear it. Pure Genesis brilliance. This is a great song from one of Genesis' best albums. I can listen to it over and over.

Said many times before, (even by band members) folks consider this to be a weak album. That may well be, given their other works. God though, I'll take this any day of the week up against the crop of modern music. Genesis' work from Trespass through their self titled album is just great. I like some later stuff like Domino & Driving the Last Spike, but later albums were weak in comparison, IMO....

ATTW3 is one of my favourites, I remember when I first heard it I didn't like it except of a few songs (about Snowman and opener), so I went listening to Gabriel albums and W&W instead. Came back a few years later to give it another chance and loved it, never would have thought it's that good

bloody awesome album!

There's so much going on here, but the bass line gets quite interesting in parts too. It would be even better with a Moog Taurus. Everything would be, really. They used it in some demo versions of various songs but it rarely seemed to make the final cut (at least that I can tell).

For me, its not a collection of songs - but more a novel of magnificent journeys and I love to go on these travels within the stories 😊

The soundscape during the guitar solo is possibly not matched by any other Genesis output - or the output of many other bands tbh. Still stunning after 40 years listening....

OK: I admittedly have zero clue as to where this band were emotionally, philosophically or creatively at this time, since Peter moved on, but this is simply magnificent. It encapsulated the pronounced, majestic and exultant quality that Tony Banks brings to bear to so many Genesis songs. It imparts a powerful message of transcendence, and it builds to a monumental crescendo.

I bought this record in 1977 when I was 12 thanks for letting me hear it again great memories !

The 2007 remaster destroyed the dynamics in the guitar solo / bridge. This post - closer to the original mix - is so much better. The use of dynamics here rivals classical music and really drives that middle section home in a way you just can’t with a constant volume level. So excellent.

Beautiful song, love how it starts out where Phil cranks it up immediately by singing in low and high tenor,both in unison!! Classic genesis who carried on successfully all the way up to the We can't dance album. Peter and Phil, both dynamic lead singers for this magnificent group!!!

One of the first Genesis albums I ever heard and I never looked back. The sound of the album coupled with the cover art which perfectly complements the music makes for one of my (still) favourite albums. The last great Genesis album IMO (even if later albums sold better - did they?)

Led Zeppelin 4 had a similarly random sleeve design.
Yet with the inclusion of "Stairway" the Old Man carrying the burden of firewood is raised to the nth power of relevance and transcendental beauty.

I like Gabriel and Collins era Genesis. Collins definitely had more beautiful songs like this one. Tony Banks is the best keyboard/synth player.

Ive maintained for many, many years that this is probably the finest most musically perfect album of ever.  Its simply a master piece.  With Burning Rope as the Tony Banks flag ship track.

Magnificent song. Love being whisked away to a far away land on this one. This whole album, and Wind and Wuthering, are my two favorite albums from Genesis. Both contain should excellent prog rocks pieces, fairy tales of magic and adventure. If I make it to 80, I'll still be listening to both.

this band just had so many good members Each of them a talent alone let alone add all 5 of them..as we had then each left to spread wings ..it is very normal to grow..amazing collection of such talented artist even the worse of these guys is the BEST you'll hear compared to today's garbage

My times coming to an end. Cest la vie. Nobody left to appreciates the grandure the straight ahead simplicity of great "music." I respected Sinatra but couldn't appreciate mom and dads appreciation. Guess you had to be there. I was. It was a great time.

When I was pretending to be Tony Banks in a Genesis tribute band years ago, this was always one of the most challenging songs to play because there's just so much going on!

This song has a lot of deep meaning to it. The lyrics are very thought provoking. Our lives are uncertain and limited, so why should anyone try to live their life as if they are immortal? Only the elements have permanence. Perhaps if some sane world leaders would listen to this song maybe they would see world governance from a different perspective.

This is a Genesis classic. It's actually made of 'spare parts' from "One for the Vine"; parts eventually excised from the finished version. And I like this song better.

I fell asleep listening to Burning Rope on a Pendolino from Glasgow to Carlisle a few years back. I got yelled at by the guard for singing along at the top of my lungs in my sleep. Also ended up in Lancaster instead of Carlisle.

Phil never did easy timings or drum patterns.  It was his tympanic signature.   Stewart Copeland of the Police from a similar blood line.

Genesis were good here. However they fucked around with Duke and Abacab by removing some great progressive songs and replacing them with songs which should have been on Phil's solo career.

Less so on Duke, more so on Abacab.

Yep. No Reply At All and Paperlate should have been Phil's solo work, not Genesis. Way too far removed from Genesis' style.

I appreciate all Genesis music, I love both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins Genesis, I even love We Can't Dance, so shut up all you Phil Collins haters...

Don't forget.....Banks & Rutherford pushed out Gabriel. Collins had a bash at vocals and what a damn fine job he did.

@Mick Betts Mainly Tony. He's so much of a perfectionist, his brainwaves move so quickly that he's hard to understand when he speaks. And while he's my favorite member of Genesis and best keyboardist of all time - he does seem like a prick. He was fed up with Pete's escalating visuals, and didn't sound like he was supportive of Gabriel spending time with his family. When you look at Genesis in '74 though - Gabriel was in full freak mode, as if Bowie and Alice Cooper had a love child

I love the Gabriel years, but the Gabriel purists are annoying. He left on his own. The band moved on and Phil became a superstar. Deal with it and enjoy the music.

Yes, it's a great song BUT they overused the mellotron. The intro for example has great melodic line, but little instrumental variety, something early Genesis was known for.

I can't agree with your comment about the mellotron being overused. It gives it an epic feel and is used effectively. Maybe you should have a word with Tony Banks about that...
