Genesis - Burning Rope Lyrics

The warming sun, the cooling rain,
The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze,
The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you
Yet only eagles seem to pass on through.
The words of love, the cries of hate,
And the man in the moon who seduced you
Then finally loosed you.

You climbed upon a burning rope to escape the mob below,
But you had put the flaming out so that others could not follow,
To be out of the bounds and the barks of those who do not wish you well.

You must blaze a trail of your own, unknown, alone,
But keep in mind
Don't live to-day for tomorrow like you were immortal.
The only survivors on this world of ours are

The warming sun, the cooling rain,
The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze,
The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you
Yet only eagles seem to pass on through.
The words of love, the cries of hate,
And the man in the moon who seduced you
Then finally loosed you.

You're old and disillusioned now as you realise at last,
That all all you have accomplished here will have soon all turned to dust.
You dream of a future after life, well that's as maybe, I don't know.
But you can't take what you left behind, you're all alone.
So keep in mind
Don't live to-day for tomorrow like you were immortal.
The only survivors on this world of ours are

The warming sun, the cooling rain,
The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze,
The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you
Yet only eagles seem to pass on through.
The words of love, the cries of hate,
And the man in the moon...

  1. A.... M....

    BELLISSIMO BRANO !!!

  2. N.... ....

So glad i saw the last Tour they made. Legendary.

  3. J.... O....

Una de las mejores canciones de este Lp junto a Undertow.. Genesis geniales. Nunca más se hará música como esta. Música que llena que satisface. No como ahora que la buena música no existe.

  4. f.... ....

A true hymn and Phil Collins so damned groovy on the drums.

  5. R.... M....

God gaves us Genesis, end of story. Thank You So Much Phil, Lot of great memories.

  6. C.... C....

I played this album every night when I was just 16 yrs old in 1978 when it was released. It made me a better person listening to the lyrics especially on this song, which is so endearing.

  7. J.... B....

    there is Genesis after Hackett.

  8. K.... M....

This song, a stormy night and cup of hot cocoa.

  9. C.... M....

    so much love

  10. U.... M....

The last prog album ever ...

  11. U.... M....

there are few songs from the post peter & steve era, i would be amazed to hear with them two in the lineup, and this is definitely one of them

  12. J.... A....

Their best ever album - and there have been some great ones over the years

  13. C.... R....

Gotta tell ya, I don't miss Hackett at all.

  14. R.... S....

cant believe this one is not on the Platinum Collection CD

  15. S.... R....

Honestly - would that song have been released on one of the Albums before it would have gotten more credit from me. Crazy how we Judge sometimes.

  16. z.... s....

I love this period of Genesis, Tony would just churn out mini-masterpiece after mini-masterpiece, this and 'One for the Vine' being right at the top of the list. Not to forget 'Undertow', criminally overlooked pop gem.

  17. m.... e....

He sounds just like peter gabriel. How come

  18. M.... B....

    Steve Hackett- I'm leaving
    Tony Banks- Hold my synth..

  19. f.... d....

Como me gusta esta musica la puta madre . Como extraño estos tiempos.

  20. P.... ....

    Masterpiece!!!

  21. C.... R....

Banks, Rutherford and Collins shining as always... Colosal track!!!

  22. Z.... ....

Tremendous song!! The only time that something burning has ever brought me out in goose bumps.

  23. M.... M....

    Outstanding jam!

  24. J.... B....

After Hackett Genesis is just beginning for a new and evolved era of thaumaturgy

  25. U.... M....

3:53 Peter and Steve had already left, but Tony is bringing them back with that (mellotron) flute followed by that enchanted guitar solo.

  26. P.... H....

Great album. This was the first one from Genesis I listened to properly.
Down and out, Undertow, Snowbound, Burning Rope, Deep in the Motherlode, the Lady lies, so many great songs!

  27. B.... S....

That guitar solo sends chills up my spine.People who know Genesis from Invisible touch and We can't dance (which I don't even consider Genesis)have no idea the music they used to make nor know what this great group is all about

  28. M.... N....

What non-musicians do not realize is that Banks probably uses more different chord patterns on this one song then today's so called musicians, who do make it big (God only knows why, dumbing down of the people I guess who do not listen to things like this) then 99 percent of these so called musicians use their entire careers. I encourage my kids to listen to this to better understand what music is really about. Not one to three chord songs made today.

  29. J.... H....

is it ok to say Genesis helped me get through enormous struggles? yeah

  30. B.... ....

Oh yes! The "BIGGEST" song on ATTW3!!! Brilliant Tony, again, but there are a few more songs to dive into. However, seeing them perform this, twice in 1978 when I was 17 remains with me, to this day.

  31. D.... G....

The part from 0:45 to about 1:20 gives me chills every time I hear it. Pure Genesis brilliance. This is a great song from one of Genesis' best albums. I can listen to it over and over.

  32. B.... S....

  33. m.... ....

Said many times before, (even by band members) folks consider this to be a weak album. That may well be, given their other works. God though, I'll take this any day of the week up against the crop of modern music. Genesis' work from Trespass through their self titled album is just great. I like some later stuff like Domino & Driving the Last Spike, but later albums were weak in comparison, IMO....

    m.... ....

ATTW3 is one of my favourites, I remember when I first heard it I didn't like it except of a few songs (about Snowman and opener), so I went listening to Gabriel albums and W&W instead. Came back a few years later to give it another chance and loved it, never would have thought it's that good

  34. P.... J....

    bloody awesome album!

  35. P.... S....

There's so much going on here, but the bass line gets quite interesting in parts too. It would be even better with a Moog Taurus. Everything would be, really. They used it in some demo versions of various songs but it rarely seemed to make the final cut (at least that I can tell).

  36. K.... M....

For me, its not a collection of songs - but more a novel of magnificent journeys and I love to go on these travels within the stories 😊

  37. K.... M....

Never tired of this album after 41 years. 😀😀😀

  38. R.... g....

The soundscape during the guitar solo is possibly not matched by any other Genesis output - or the output of many other bands tbh. Still stunning after 40 years listening....

  39. b.... w....

My favourite album after seconds out.!

  40. P.... 7....

OK: I admittedly have zero clue as to where this band were emotionally, philosophically or creatively at this time, since Peter moved on, but this is simply magnificent. It encapsulated the pronounced, majestic and exultant quality that Tony Banks brings to bear to so many Genesis songs. It imparts a powerful message of transcendence, and it builds to a monumental crescendo.
    Or in other words:
    I fucking LOVE this!

  41. R.... V....

I bought this record in 1977 when I was 12 thanks for letting me hear it again great memories !

  42. G.... T....

The 2007 remaster destroyed the dynamics in the guitar solo / bridge. This post - closer to the original mix - is so much better. The use of dynamics here rivals classical music and really drives that middle section home in a way you just can’t with a constant volume level. So excellent.

  43. W.... G....

Magnifica sublime...esto llega a las venas, un sentido que atravieza la misma razon ...te transporta la verdadera magia del tiempo...Grande Genesis...Grande Phill Colins!

  44. Y.... J....

Beautiful song, love how it starts out where Phil cranks it up immediately by singing in low and high tenor, both in unison!! Classic genesis who carried on successfully all the way up to the We can't dance album. Peter and Phil, both dynamic lead singers for this magnificent group!!!

  45. w.... ....

    unbelievable-40 years ago-my schooltime.The best album ever-music from another world.Genesis forever.

  46. G.... M....

One of the first Genesis albums I ever heard and I never looked back. The sound of the album coupled with the cover art which perfectly complements the music makes for one of my (still) favourite albums. The last great Genesis album IMO (even if later albums sold better - did they?)

  47. M.... T....

Musicalmente uno dei più grandi album del secolo........

  48. P.... 7....

Such an innocuous album sleeve design for something so immortally magnificent and transcendent.

    P.... 7....

OK, replying to myself. Not cool:
Led Zeppelin 4 had a similarly random sleeve design.
Yet with the inclusion of "Stairway" the Old Man carrying the burden of firewood is raised to the nth power of relevance and transcendental beauty.
    Just Saying...

    P.... 7....

@Primus 777 Ha ha! Just discovered (and appreciated) your posts. I always HATED this album cover...but am gaining a new appreciation for the music itself after all these years. Genesis (both Gabriel and Collins) rules!

BTW...Zep4 could have been packaged in manure and it would still be among my Top 5 albums of all-time. Cheers!

  49. J.... M....

My favorite album of all time. Every song tells a story.

  50. M.... P....

I like Gabriel and Collins era Genesis. Collins definitely had more beautiful songs like this one. Tony Banks is the best keyboard/synth player.

  51. D.... S....

My favorite Genesis song. This song is epic!

  52. D.... ....

One of my favourite guitar solos. No matter how many times I hear it, I just go to another plane of bliss as those bars kick in. Just fantastic!

    D.... ....

There are few songs of the post peter & steve era I would be amazed to hear with them in the band and this is definitely one of them.

    D.... ....

There are few songs of the post peter & steve era I would be amazed to hear with them in the band and this is definitely one of them.

  53. S.... J....

    Good album, perfect song.

  54. R.... ....

the change at 3:38 to 3:54 and 4:02 it's something outstanding.

  55. d.... o....

Genesis grazie per esserci stati grazie per le sonorità uniche grazie per l'emozione che si provano ascoltando i vostri brani. Grazie grazie nessuno mai più come voi

  56. F.... J....

Essa canção é incrível! A letra é maravilhosa! Enfim, verdadeira obra de arte, que só o velho e bom rock progressivo pode nos oferecer!

  57. T.... S....

Ive maintained for many, many years that this is probably the finest most musically perfect album of ever.  Its simply a master piece.  With Burning Rope as the Tony Banks flag ship track.

  58. j.... w....

this track is far to good to be on this album it sounds like a trick or a wind song

  59. S.... ....

Magnificent song. Love being whisked away to a far away land on this one. This whole album, and Wind and Wuthering, are my two favorite albums from Genesis. Both contain should excellent prog rocks pieces, fairy tales of magic and adventure. If I make it to 80, I'll still be listening to both.

  60. S.... D....

this band just had so many good members Each of them a talent alone let alone add all 5 of them..as we had then each left to spread wings ..it is very normal to grow..amazing collection of such talented artist even the worse of these guys is the BEST you'll hear compared to today's garbage

  61. C.... R....

Tony Banks is the real Genesis´s musical brain

  62. s.... j....

I agreed with an old friend of mine that's this one of the best Genesis songs ever composed with a briljant solo at the end!!!!!

  63. D.... K....

My times coming to an end. Cest la vie. Nobody left to appreciates the grandure the straight ahead simplicity of great "music." I respected Sinatra but couldn't appreciate mom and dads appreciation. Guess you had to be there. I was. It was a great time.

  64. J.... ....

Anyone else get a few echoes of Mad Man Mood from the Trick of the Tail album, with some of the lyrical content of this song?

_The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze_
_The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you_
_Yet only eagles seem to pass on through_

    also,

_And the man in the moon who seduced you_
    _Then finally loosed you_

  65. P.... 7....

    Fabulous Album. End Of.
The music has an exultant, powerful and monumental quality.
    Like "Duke" the later album.
    Genesis's Finest Hour maybe?

  66. m.... a....

0:01 mmmmm Dance on a Volcano?

  67. P.... T....

This is where my soul resides….in this fantastic music.

  68. J.... ....

Master piece composed by Tony Banks.

  69. F.... A....

Harmonic progression sounds like Late Romanticism, Rachmaninoff

  70. G.... Y....

    Unbelievably a masterpiece!!!

  71. M.... R....

When I was pretending to be Tony Banks in a Genesis tribute band years ago, this was always one of the most challenging songs to play because there's just so much going on!

    M.... R....

    respect brother

    M.... R....

so much going on ? ... ever tried "colony of slippermen" ?

  72. w.... ....

This song has a lot of deep meaning to it. The lyrics are very thought provoking. Our lives are uncertain and limited, so why should anyone try to live their life as if they are immortal? Only the elements have permanence. Perhaps if some sane world leaders would listen to this song maybe they would see world governance from a different perspective.

  73. L.... L....

This is a Genesis classic. It's actually made of 'spare parts' from "One for the Vine"; parts eventually excised from the finished version. And I like this song better.

    L.... L....

Oh man, another one of my favorites. I'd love to hear the intended cut.

  74. J.... K....

You're old and disillusioned now as you realise at last, That all all you have accomplished here will have soon all turned to dust.

  75. P.... S....

„The man in the moon who seduced you and finally used you.“ This album was my first from Genesis, I soaked up all other records but stopped after they teamed up with Volkswagen for promotions. Psychedelic lyrics, orchestral rock, and epic performances make a true genesis of music!

  76. J.... R....

En los ochentas compre el cassette de esta obra maravillosa y tanto me gustó que acabe por tronar dicho cassette.

  77. k.... ....

    DAT solo.

  78. n.... b....

you will die the only things that will live on is the universe, make sure your short amount of time here is not wasted.

  79. C.... S....

    I love this song

  80. D.... B....

I fell asleep listening to Burning Rope on a Pendolino from Glasgow to Carlisle a few years back. I got yelled at by the guard for singing along at the top of my lungs in my sleep. Also ended up in Lancaster instead of Carlisle.

    D.... B....

I went I went to school in Glasgow Glasgow University always listen to Genesis back then in those days cool bro

    D.... B....

i guess its a happy accident that you ended up in lancaster, beautiful place

    D.... B....

    Best. Story. Ever, hahaha!

    D.... B....

Don't matter where you end up...so long as you were singing at your peak. 😁😁😁

    D.... B....

I got pissed up in Lancaster about two months ago.

  81. M.... P....

My favorite Genesis album. Thanks Mom!

  82. T.... G....

    Simply amazing.

  83. M.... C....

3:55 Musica di Primissima il settimanale del Tg1 in versione 1984

  84. B.... ....

Was lucky to see them perform this.Wow goosebumps unbelevable. The full album start to end just brill.Favorite one, makes me cry every time.

  85. C.... ....

+Johnny C's Music Emporium Thanks for the lyrics--you are awesome!
What an awesome track! This album was the peak of Genesis and progressive rock in general.
4:03 to 5:09 they are just killing it!
The crescendo on "The only survivors on this world of ours are..." is brilliant!

Don't live today for tomorrow like you were immortal.
The only survivors on this world of ours are
The warming sun, the cooling rain,
The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze,
The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you
Yet only eagles seem to pass on through.
The words of love, the cries of hate
    -now 'dems some outstanding lyrics!

  86. M.... C....

    Phil's drumming, Magnificent!

    M.... C....

Phil never did easy timings or drum patterns.  It was his tympanic signature.   Stewart Copeland of the Police from a similar blood line.

  87. s.... ....

Wundervoll und nie vergessen. Es ist sowas wie Lebenselexier. Love To Genesis.

  88. d.... m....

just a perfect composition .melodies and sounds .

  89. g.... ....

The intro to this song blows me away. The instrumental interlude blows me even further.

  90. b.... -....

Genesis were good here. However they fucked around with Duke and Abacab by removing some great progressive songs and replacing them with songs which should have been on Phil's solo career.

    b.... -....

Less so on Duke, more so on Abacab.

    b.... -....

Yep. No Reply At All and Paperlate should have been Phil's solo work, not Genesis. Way too far removed from Genesis' style.

  91. I.... Q....

I appreciate all Genesis music, I love both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins Genesis, I even love We Can't Dance, so shut up all you Phil Collins haters...

    I.... Q....

Don't forget.....Banks & Rutherford pushed out Gabriel. Collins had a bash at vocals and what a damn fine job he did.

    I.... Q....

@Mick Betts Mainly Tony. He's so much of a perfectionist, his brainwaves move so quickly that he's hard to understand when he speaks. And while he's my favorite member of Genesis and best keyboardist of all time - he does seem like a prick. He was fed up with Pete's escalating visuals, and didn't sound like he was supportive of Gabriel spending time with his family. When you look at Genesis in '74 though - Gabriel was in full freak mode, as if Bowie and Alice Cooper had a love child

    I.... Q....

I agree - I even ended up enjoying invisible touch and my favorite song from we cant dance is fading lights ! I saw Genesis in 1974, 1975. and 1987 - I am a Steve Hackett disciple. Peace.

    I.... Q....

I love the Gabriel years, but the Gabriel purists are annoying. He left on his own. The band moved on and Phil became a superstar. Deal with it and enjoy the music.

    I.... Q....

    Agreed, all Genesis is great!!!!!!!!

  92. M.... ....

That guitar solo starting at 4:03 just cuts thru the core of my soul every time i hear it!
    Love Genesis Forever!!

    M.... ....

MyFAT69 I get goose bumps every time I listen to this song!

    M.... ....

Mike did a great "Steve" impression, but can you imagine this played by Steve himself !

    M.... ....

Mike developing as a lead guitar player

    M.... ....

Killer tone, not showing off. Just the right notes.

  93. M.... R....

Don't let anyone ever tell you that the visionary poets of the brief but blinding era of Classic Progressive Music were not the deepest prophets we'll ever meet!

  94. M.... R....

We're climbing upon a Burning Rope. Can't you feel the Fire?

  96. E.... C....

Well, I like their early material more but this is one beautiful piece of musing.

    E.... C....

    music :-)

    E.... C....

Interesting typo you have there. The lyrics are a "beautiful piece of musing" about life, the human condition etc. I didn't think it was a mistake till I saw your correction.

  97. J.... G....

I cry when I hear this.. Thankyou LORD JESUS !!!!!!!

  98. J.... P....

Since I ever got this album, I could not helped smiling at 4:37
    Long live Genesis!

    J.... P....

    Luis Eduardo Galindo why not?

  99. T.... S....

Yes, it's a great song BUT they overused the mellotron. The intro for example has great melodic line, but little instrumental variety, something early Genesis was known for.

    T.... S....

I can't agree with your comment about the mellotron being overused. It gives it an epic feel and is used effectively. Maybe you should have a word with Tony Banks about that...

    T.... S....

I love the mellotron on this song, so I don't agree either...

    T.... S....

Either be careful what you wish for, or look no further. Cuz just up ahead, your travels will end, ya big anti-mellotron Duke!
