Genesis - Behind The Lines Lyrics
I held the book so tightly in my hands,
I saw your picture, heard you call my name
There was something strange, I could not look away
I wanted to be there, I wanted to go
You gave no reason
But I was with you
Right by your side
Just give me the strength, and I will help you
And they can try their hardest, cos they don't frighten me
It is written in the book
It is hotter than I've known before, but I feel so cold, and I don't know why
But if the fire within your heart can beat the storm
Ooh the time has come now
We must show our feelings
But I'm looking right through you
And your heart is empty
Whatever happened to you it's too late to change now
There's nowhere you can run to, no place to hide
Ah you let me down!
...but wait a minute, I don't understand
It's getting stronger, so grab my hand
Don't wanna leave you, don't wanna go
But I'm losing all control
Can't you see me? I'm slipping away
I can only stay if you've the will to keep me here
It is written in the book
Oh so many times since I've read those words
Just waiting to see you, can you see me?

Genesis Behind The Lines Comments
this intro is the band's favorite recording, hence their final tour in 2007 all opening with it! 💙
enjoy the music and stop the bitch fest. ffs..im sick of this "NOT TRUE GENESIS" and all that crap. enough already!! genesis spanned the eras and all decades! they stood the test of time and had something for everybody. so shut your asses up and enjoy the music
Probably the best album opener I've ever heard. I love how it immediately starts with those explosive drums and keyboard riffs
Colin Evans yup!
Probably the best opening song in music history!
Nostalgila lg
This great song opens the in my (and I know not only my) opinion the last real Genesis Album.
Tony Banks, a classically trained pianist, is the key to all of Genesis albums.
A new world is unveiled . . . get ready
Thank you very very much!!. I love Phil
I remember this intro:
Life was a fantastic journey.
Aspiration was a given.
Love was a Blessing.
Hope was Eternal.
Genesis was an (appropriate) backdrop.
Shame we have to grow old,
Or not....
What an amazing Intro for an album! This woke every Genesis fan up like an ALARM CLOCK!
imcrazy
This songs is awesome. I never get tired of playing it with mi tribute band.
No one has mentioned the cover art! I bought that French alphabet book back in the day and still have it! “Q comme question et quartier de lune...” (They removed the question mark above his head.) 😍
It's written in the book man
Summer of 1980 brought me here. My first year in Imperials Drum & Bugle Corps as a cymbal player.
Going from 8th grade to Freshman year. This album was the soundtrack to that summer.
Great song everrrr.....of Genesis
Top 10 intro of all-times. Watcher of the skies is nr 1 in my books.
What is that end? 🤨
It’s designed to segue into track 2, which it does, but without track 2 immediately afterwards it just kind of.... stops.
@the mighty duck
Okay I see 👍
That opening
This on a church organ would be divine
I think one of the greatest Genesis albums! legendary...
I haven't listened to many Genesis albums, but this is a fabulous one by any standard. And that's saying something, as my taste in music is really varied.
The thunder drum
The truth prog
Phil is pounding the hell outta those skins.
Incredible band, I dont know what happened to Phils image?, for me he was and is a very important part of the music score of my life, Im not a fan of his solo but love everything Genesis and the other projects he had done. A proper star
Chester Thompson double drummed with Collins on the tour
Killer album opener, that breakdown at 2:18 is awesome.
It doesn't matter if it was the Gabriel or Collins era, Genesis mastered the art of picking a lead off track for their albums.
Picking his nose morelike
Peter Gabriel was shite while on genesis
Phil Collins is an absolute genius and was the glue that held Genesis together
A band is only as good as it's drummer. :)
*laughs in Ringo*
Sono cresciuto con la vostra musica..siete mitici..Grazie Genesis
AWESOME ..... a a drummer I love it
Hay alguen que hable español aqui?
yes yes yes!!!
The intro sounds... terrific!
The intro sounds... terrific!
The intro sounds... terrific!
This sounds like Rainbow Road
I love it so much
One of my best Genesis tracks, b side of turn it on again but much better than that.
Another great song by Genesis largely in part because of Phil's smooth and mellow vocals. Phil delivered all the soul that this song has. Phil brought so much magic to Genesis that will never die.
Damn!Phil rules!!The drum part is amazing!😁😀
Took a long long time to get into Duke. Dukes Travels is pure genius. I still loathe Ripples however and always will. Bad compared to this.
Mike’s bass is so groovy on this track.
Needs more cowbell

highs ,,, lows ,,,, twists ,,, and turns ,,,, you had to be great at your craft to play this stuff ... and a genius to write it ... thank you genesis !!!!
It reminds me in the vocal part (not in the instrumental one) to I want you back from The Jackson Five.
Funny enough... the whole Michael Jackson thing even extended to how Phil wanted his solo version of the song to sound like. Just speed up this Genesis version 2x to get the point.
Conservative music scene of today, this is how you do it!!!!!!
Ta muzyka to jest moc ........🤣
Hola mi nely
Es un grupo fuera de serie no hay nada igual
Truley Magical. I will play this when im 90!
I LOVE this album! You obviously have great taste!
What is this magic. Like Cinema Show with better drumming. I am in love.
I love how you can hear those soulful motown influences this prog-rock masterpiece.
Good observation. Fantastic composite of both.
CLASIC SONG LOVE.....
Listened to this on the plane to Morocco for my oldest son’s wedding reception. Great memories-great song!!
my favorit song...behind the line and gonna get better...😍😍😍
Cool Song Bro!
Where is the part 2 ?
4:11 bridge is charged with excitement and adrenaline, I love it
This song may kill my ears when I listen to it with earbuds but I do not give a single shit!
Agreed!
John Stewart "pardon"
Nice Peter Gabriel profile pic.
Mike’s guitar playing at the intro is amazing just as good as Steve Hackett
got tricked, its mostly tony trickery trying to sound like hackett
I wouldn't say Mike is/was as good as Steve, and he'd most likely admit it himself!
My sister played this album to death!! This song is so good intro hits you like a bulldozer!!! Happy times
People..
Change the speed to 1.25x.
Mind = BLOWN.
The best 📀 of all.. perfect ..
Anybody knows if they made single version
Apparently, this song was the "B" side to Misunderstanding if you bought the 45rpm single. If you have the vinyl album or the CD, you can hear this version (heard on this YT video) fade out and blend in to Duchess.
Yes! it's not a drum machine yet ...
Phil Collins' best vocal the album Duke , and Face Value around the same time - his voice just exuded class
My absolute fave Genesis tune😊
Duke is their best work!
True GENIUSIS.
Imma go listen to the whole album again right now, but I'm pretty sure this is my favorite song off Duke.
1:17 after 20 years of constant listening i still don't get that keyboard note
Awesome!! Seen them 5 times live...love Genesis.
Amazing intro....powerful anda sublime.
Anyone else think this song's about Don Quixote?
I personally prefer this version to the Face Value version. The FV version is much more laid back and fits onto the album perfectly, but it doesn't have a great intro, plus when you turn this up loud I feel so awesome!
RecordDude 7788 Ah, but on FV, you get the fantastic brass.
I play the trumpet, so I'm slightly biased!
I am fond of prog-rock Genesis period, but I think that Collins' Face Value is a really enjoyable album.
Phil's solo version of this song came to be because when he heard the playback of the Genesis version, sped-up, he and Mike Rutherford thought it sounded like a Michael Jackson song.
Phil has been my hero drummer all my life, all my hated friends hated genesis except me...
FUCKING INTRO! How about the rendition on Face Value?! Also GOLD.
Greatest intro ever!!!!!! :D
I am a PEART Fan of Rush but as a Drummer I play my Style like Phil he is AWESOME.
Ron Calvert Peart once said his drumming hero was Phil Collins, thats one hell of an endorsement.
In his prime Phil took a backseat to no one as a drummer. He was a killer drummer and had the resume' to prove it.
@christopher goodwin I did not know that Chris ...WOW
génesis
I think of Raiden XD
at least play the full track, nobby
This song has the greatest intro in all of rock and roll music bar none. On the flip side, the song with the greatest outro is "Shadows Of The Night" by Pat Benatar (Listen to the album version of the song from 3:47 onwards). Gentlemen, let the debates begin. Just remember to keep your comments classy and respectable.
This song has the greatest intro in all of rock and roll bar none; on the other hand, the song with the greatest outro is "Shadows Of The Night" by Pat Benatar (the unabridged album version). Gentlemen, start the debates but keep things clean and classy.
Does anyone else find that moment at 01:17 a bit clashy in terms of the notes?
No Jon Anderson, no Yes! ... ? ... oh, wrong forum. Excuse me while I slink away.
Apoteosico el gran maestro sin duda ,aun lo disfruto escuchando a Phil genesis DUKE como cuando tenia 18 years enjoy as a dwarf.

never forget when I bought the hit single "missunderstanding"this song was on b side of 45 and was blown away by the power and energy.Still blast this song in my car.Such a positive powerful song
Excellent quality of sound!
The Best
Great bass line throughout; Rutherford nails it...
Shame that it is very hard fir most of us to hear all of Mike's bass work, due to digital compression and the cell phone speakers we listen on.
Great barely begins to describe it. The arrangement is all over the place. Rutherford covers the full range like it's no big deal. And that GROOVE in the verse, amazing!
una introduzione spettacolare!!!!
