Genesis - All In A Mouse's Night Lyrics
[Loving Couple:]
I can't see you but I know you're there.
Got to get beside you cos it's really cold out here.
Come up close to me you'll soon be warm.
Hold me tightly like we're sheltering from a storm.
[Mouse:]
Think I might go out for a stroll
Into the night, and out of this hole.
Maybe find me a meal.
Walking along this new shag pile
Presents a problem all the while.
Nearly the door.
Suddenly he bumps into wood, the door is closed.
A voice from the bed, he'll be exposed.
The light's been turned on, he's blind as a mole in coal.
Now I can see they're coming at me,
They've blocked off my door, I haven't a chance in hell.
[Couple:]
Come on baby let the poor thing go.
I'm not sleeping with that thing around here, no.
Alright then, I'll fetch a box from below,
Guard him carefully, they're very quick you know.
[Mouse:]
The door's been opened, my chance to escape.
Must run out quick, better sorry than late.
I'm out on the stairs.
They won't catch me now, I've the run of the house now.
I'll make it downstairs and into the breadbin.
That would be nice.
Suddenly he bumps into fur, that's very unwise,
A cat is much quicker than men and their eyes.
The chase that ensues can have only one end,
Unless outside help steps in for our friend in need.
But now the cat comes in for the kill,
His paw is raised, soon blood will spill, yes it will.
[Cat:]
Hard luck mouse, this is the end of your road.
The signpost says inside me, let me bear your heavy load.
But it's not to be, that final pounce
Knocks a jar upon his head, and lays him out.
But it's all in a mouse's night
To take on all those who would fight.
[Cat's Story:]
There I was with my back to the wall,
Then comes this monster mouse, he's ten feet tall,
With teeth and claws to match.
It only took one blow.

I love Rush and Yes as much as the next man... but Genesis is Platinum..
... intros, instrumentals, codas ... it's should be roughly 50% of their total progressive years output
When Genius work, drugs are not necessary, only talent
so much love for this!!!
Licht aus und nur Music
geniessen
non è per me il miglior brano di quest album ma sicuramente piacevole armonioso melodico
Such a great song About such a Tiny Little Thing. Oh sorry, Mr. Tomcat - About a real dangerous Monster, of Course.
70’s Genesis rules !! ☮️
A beautiful song!
Who are the 32 idiots that gave it thumbs down?
Pura essência do Genesis....!!!!

This is too artsy and intellectual. I prefer their 1980s work.
Tony's small ARP Pro-Soloist synth is conspicuously missing from this entire album. Even on "A Trick", he used his new ARP 2600 modular for the ending of "Entangled." He was really digging into it here. What sounds like a string synth is likely his 2600 multi-tracked (it was only capable of playing 2 notes at once). It lends a rich atmospheric shimmer, especially here. Mike's Moog Taurus bass pedals are, as always, earth-shaking. (Steve also used the Taurus pedals).
I discovered this, Yes’ GFTO, and Rush’s Farewell To Kings all at the same time. I was a little kid. Then there also was ELP’s Works Volume One...
What imagination. Powerful ending.
what a song ... crazy drums and arrangement, and the end Tony and Steve answering each other in both melodies. omg!
How could a song recorded in 1977 feature this enormous, clean, multilayered sound?? Amazing synthesizers!
Anything can happen on a mouse's night, he meets the cat on a cold night, the rat tries to be friends with the cat, talks to him: -"I'm cold", the cat promises to warm him: -" let our differences aside "... It's an epic about differences, where lies try to minimize it, but there's no way.
Tudo pode acontecer na noite de um rato, até ser detido com um único golpe, até mesmo por um gato que se dizia amigo.
Genesis with Peter Gabriel and the first 3 albums without him make Genesis the greatest band in the history of the human race.
I subscribes it
The melodic interplay between banks and hackett in last couple min is pure Genesis at its finest-that was as good as it gets
Imho.the last great Genesis album.ive always been partial to "that other guy" butMr Phil Collins is a badass m.fer, whether out front, behind the kit or adding layers of golden harmonies he is truely a major talent to b reckoned with.
A mouses tale - I love this shit. A cat is much faster than a mouse or even the rest of us.
Aside from how everything else about this song is perfect:
I’ve never heard a drum grove exactly like this one during the chorus. Kinda..1..2..3!....(1..2..3)....1..2..3..!.....(1..2..3.). My notation fails.
Can any of you musicians explain it? Is it triplets?
This has to be the Davis remixed version. I can tell from the amount of compression. He punched up their whole catalog, which sounds better to me. I will never get rid of the original mixes, however.
As cheesy as it is, it's still an amazing song! I mean, a song about a cat and a mouse, really? And one that turns into a giant mouse? Someone else should have written the lyrics!! Then again, the music is something else. The last section and outro are outstanding! Thanks Tony!
My favorite song on this album
Last relevant Genesis album
Remember when Phil Collins used to sing about rodents and not ex-wives?
Never heard this song. NEVER
Love this song, maybe beyond words. I was 13 when this came out, loved it then, love it know.
Still great
I have listened to this when I was 12 in the 70’s. It is still incredible
Hacket at his very best in the 2 minute ending, it always FREAKS me out!!!
Jimmy Gallant he’s the master of outro solos!
My favourite Genesis album!
Simply great!!!!!
Serão lembrados no futuro como os Bach, Beethoven de nossa época. Gênios
Tony keyboards Play is always so great
The voice of Phil is so impressive in this...I love it...
1980, dreaming of Lisbeth
27 dislikes must have gotten their toes caught in a trap.
Wonderful, fantastical stuff. Love it. I’m 60 y/o. Been a fan for almost 50 years. Will always love Genesis. There I was, my back to the wall...
Sublime !!!
i love this song but it seems its not that popular ?
The mellotron intro always shakes my spine.....
In the winter of 1980 I was living in Tampa Florida and it was a cold winter, one night I woke and Al was keeping the fire roaring in my fire place, Al is standing there like a chubby hermit shivering with his arm's wrapped around his chest. Then I looked on the floor at to the right of his right foot is a small mouse standing on its hind legs, shivering with his arm's wrapped around his chest. What a site, I said don't move Al, he replied he knows it's been there a half hour now. No lie. I lived at 309-South Edison, that house is long gone I Google mapped it. Thank You for the memories
Oh,what a remember..easy,crazy.. Genesis..the best
This is my favourite Genesis album.
I'd love to see/hear Simon cover this.
genesis i like it
#GENISIS4LIFE
4'40 >❤️ Steve Hackett
"Walking along this new shag pile / presents a problem all the while" - I guess the strange nouns "shag pile" represent the mouse's view of the couple on the bed, or perhaps on a mattress placed out on the floor? :D
I always loved "The signpost inside me let me bear your heavy load."
@Antony Gomersall Oh yes! Or this, from Eleventh Earl:
See the Stewart all dressed up
He's got eyes in the back of his head.
Who came in a cockleshell boat
That could only just float,
Couldn't even lift a sword?
Dressed too fine and smelling of wine.
Daddy, you've got to go!
Here come the bishop all dressed up
He's gonna bless you if you're ready to pay
One wave of his funny old stick,
There's a band of light across your eyes.
That's just magnificent - and it sounds great when he's singing it.
Did you see the book of KimPoor paintings that part of 11th Aaron is based on?
@Antony Gomersall No, I only knew the song is loosely about the last great Scottish rebellion.
Yeah. The "There's a band of light across your eyes" bit is based on a picture, also Entangled from A trick of the tail.
And you know whats sad? almost NOBODY knows this song exhists! If they only knew
Great song but AWFUL MIX/REMASTERING...The 2007 editions of "A Trick of the Tale" and "Wind and Wuthering" are absolutely fucking HORRENDOUS...How did Phil, Steve, Tony, and Mike allow this to happen???
Tales of mice ,now we hear tales of tripe.
It only took one blow.....
Thank You very much for all Your Genesis Gems in High Quality and with Lyrics, especially for this One!
Steve Hackett does a beautiful solo at the end. What a wonderfull song! I wish I´ve seen these tune live in the seventies!!!
Now you have the band Musical Box, who imitates perfectly the Genesis of the 70's. Check their tour, I saw them twice and it was magic.
Non si può definire...è musica aliena
10 feet yo.... biggest mouse ever!
Subtle but excellent drumming by Collins as always here.
non ci sono parole.............il massimo dell'espressione dei genesis
Back when songs had intros and endings...
The people joke to much, the song is great.
fantastic song. amazing sound.
Banks rules! This is a Banks masterpiece! Keyboards volume level at the end are part of the song concept.
triplet bass drum beats like Bonham
Man, some parts of this song really remind me of a band.
Can't quite put my finger on their name, but the band is the opposite of "No"
Wind & Whutering is especially a work of Tony Banks, is the best musician and composer of Genesis, which is to say, one of the best musicians in contemporary history.
Ahhhh yes..... Fairy Tales still DO exist.
3:54 falsetto part :)
Last great Genesis album.
Solo 155.748 visualizzazioni?!
Paolo Ldmz Hai perfettamente ragione, purtroppo
Forgot what a great album this is , Genesis never recovered from Steve Hacketts departure .
Hackett was important, but, And Then There Were Three is also a phenomenal album (I rarely play that radio-quality song at the end though). The Lady Lies - masterpiece. Undertow? Burning Rope? Love those tunes. Hackett didn't murder Genesis until they ran out of steam.
I was never a big Genesis fan in the 70's. I was addicted to Yes. I was given "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" and started to really enjoy Genesis but then suddenly Gabriel announces his departure. 1976 Genesis release Trick of the tail and Wind and Wuthering. I could not imagine Genesis continuing without Gabriel and was I ever so wrong. These are perhaps the two best albums ever recorded. Finally saw them at Madison Square garden in 2007. It was truly magical!
Banks was Genesis to me,if he left, then Genesis would have died.
His KBs and songwriting gave the Genesis signature.
Gary Rawlinson And Then There Were Three was awesome.
j en pleure tellement c est beau
I always thought of this as the least likeable track on an otherwise superb album.
Sure, it's a great melody but the lyrics are... well not really Genesis and just twee.
Perhaps if brand new lyrics on another subject might have stood this track in a much better light.
Still, its Genesis...
This song is much more than anyone could suppose to;It's the dance of life and death
Great lyrics
Awesome freaken song!!!! I love them
Tony Banks rules, pure magic
Solo Tony Banks??
questi signori , si rendono conto di cotanta arte trasformata in musica, che ha fatto crescere in pace la mia generazione?
I have played this album for some unlikely listeners and while they smoked uncle weed it started to sound better and better to them, and someone would later ask ..hey who was that you were playing???
Don't underestimate the power of Genesis.🎵🎵🎵
This whole album is a masterpiece!!! glad i have it on cd and my mp3.
Finale pazzesco! I più grandi di sempre!
somebody with more talent than me do the right thing and make a good video for this song. it's so visual already. I can picture most of it already. animation might be a good way to do it. anyone?!
They were capable of SO MUCH!!-I dont think they truly realized...
always someone badder
Awesome.............but from 3.56 onwards it climbs to an unparalleled level, hypnotic, simply incredible.............after all these years, amazing!
In the final two minutes, the music seems to talk of something much more poignant than the passing of a mouse... :) Yes, great playing, great harmonic changes and a perfectly executed solo by Hackett - all blown into bigger-than-life size by the huge reverb and saturated sound on that coda. :)
La magia de Tony Banks.
Genesis will always be the best darn band of all time no matter what. Rock on!!!!!!
Absolute Classic, gets better and better, every member of the band totally excel on this track.
How ever did Pink Floyd out sell these guys? I guess there`s no accounting for taste?
Indeed, I've always felt that Genesis did far better stuff than Floyd on their heyday.
I wish that they had stayed on this course instead of pursuing their '80's stuff like "In Too Deep" but times change and so did they.
splendida e finale maestoso
Very mice,..
git to play on drums
Viva Italia fratelli...
Viva L'italia sempre!❤❤❤❤❤❤
