Gene Watson - Old Porch Swing Lyrics

It's hung there on the front porch
Since this old house was built
It's where the old men whittle
And the women fleece their quilts
It's held four generations
Through whatever life could bring
That ol' swing
That ol' porch swing

It held a grieving widow
When my daddy's daddy died
And now it rocks my children
When they close their sleepy eyes
It's where I popped the question
With a quarter karat ring
That ol' swing
That ol' porch swing

It's been there through the sunshine
It's had it's share of rain
Been a witness to some good times
And a like amount of pain
If it could tell it's story
What a Violin could sing
That ol' swing
That ol' porch swing

It's where brother read the letter
That sent him off to war
We knew he had to go and fight
But we didn't know what for
When he came home he just sat there
And never said a thing
In that swing
That ol' porch swing

It's been there through the sunshine
It's had it's share of rain
Been a witness to some good times
And a like amount of pain
If it could tell it's story
What a Violin could sing
That ol' swing
That ol' porch swing

That ol' swing
That ol' porch swing...

  13. l.... S....

Still love that old porch swing, so many memories had just swinging

  14. O.... ....

How can Country Music not put the man who sang "Paper Rosie" in the country music hall of fame???   That is essentially the sweetest dearest country song of all time!  He has sang so many other great country songs it is appearing to me at least that something is surely rotten in Nashville????

    O.... ....

And "When she touches me" such a Beautiful song!!!

  15. R.... M....

  22. J.... C....

a great voice& ballad story--thanks--a new tune for me!

  23. L.... C....

I just don't get it..why Gene is not in the Hall of Fame or even a member of the Opry. The so called "officials" are out of their mind.

    L.... C....

    I AGREE!

    L.... C....

It's by invitation, yet you had to perform in other areas..ticket sales, fan base, dedication to the music industry, tenure, and most important ..do you have classic country recognition that will carry on the reputation of the Opry. He also had to seek out the Opry and he may not have..But, he has some of the old best country songs recorded...I agree with you...he should be there.

    L.... C....

    they have no taste

  24. J.... T....

one of the best ever thanks ole pal. jimbo

  25. G.... ....

Please note Gene Watson has had 6 # 1 Songs on various national music charts.

  26. B.... W....

Just love this man and his music.......Such emotion right from his heart & soul...........Can't understand WHY he is still not in the Country Hall of Music.........SHAME!  SUCH A SHAME!

  27. N.... T....

    Can't be beat

  28. C.... R....

    love his songs

  29. c.... ....

Nobody puts more emotion into their songs.  Great voice!

  30. P.... ....

What a voice, what feeling, Gene Watson hits it out of the park and right into our hearts. I remember the first time I heard 'Farewell Party' as a teenager, just stopped what I was doing, couldn't believe my ears. No doubt, one of the greatest voices - more than that, greatest singers - since this soulful music we call 'country' first came along.

    P.... ....

PabluchoViision I am going to see him in concert the October twenty at river wind in Norman okla he is the best ,, I listen to his music everyday and I never get tired of them..."Edith Langston thanks gene''

  31. D.... B....

True country, by a true man, great story teller and wonderful voice. The man gets better everytime I hear him.

  32. L.... L....

the more I hear, the more I want to hear. Love you Gene

  33. C.... ....

Thanks so much for sharing this great song. I plan on doing a cover of it very soon.
Gene Watson is one of the best. Too bad we don't hear country songs like this any more...it's a crying shame. Thanks again.
    Ray

  34. J.... I....

I totally agree with you Norman...

  35. D.... K....

We need to keep trying. It is a new year and a new try!!

  36. D.... K....

One of my VERY FAVORITE Gene Watson songs. If I didn't have an old porch swing. It would make me want one.So many memories.

  37. R.... C....

I HAVE CALLED, BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MANY FANS CALL. HALL OF FAME IS GOING TO PICK WHOEVER THEY WANT. GARTH BROOKS AND CONNIE SMITH WAS JUST INDUCTED, BROOKS WAS NOT EVEN BORN WHEN GENE STARTED SINGING. NOT FAIR, LIFE ISN'T FAIR.

    R.... C....

The hall of fame has become the hall of shame, most of it has nothing to do with country music anymore. i don't even waste my time anymore.

  38. 3.... ....

One thing about Gene Watson fans......................We are true to our dear friend. He's the best and I don't care about the hall of fame any more. This was my last year to ever watch. They have inducted some not so good singers to pass over Gene so they can keep it. I consider the source ( a bunch of sad bias indivduals that are tone deaf.)

  39. N.... D....

So many of today's singers are all sounding the same. It is nice to hear the clear mellow tones with the emotion that is true country. Gene came to Jonesboro, AR and it was great to hear him in person.

  40. N.... D....

    This is so true

  41. O.... B....

    love this song.

  42. J.... I....

    I can't hear it enough!!!

  43. b.... ....

Love it! Thank you so much for taking the time to post it

  44. i.... ....

    A REAL singer.

  45. f.... ....

    Enjoyed.

  46. T.... J....

He never got recognized like he should of. His voice is so mellow, clear and he puts all his feelings into it. PURE COUNTRY music...the classics nothing more to say

  47. J.... a....

Likewise, thank you so much for this!

  48. J.... ....

GOD BLESS YOU my friend....Thanks so much for sharing this BEAUTIFUL BALLAD with us....absolutely wonderful presentation. I sung this song on SINGSNAP Karaoke.....gives me a chance to share some "feeling" in singing.....Totally in my element...
    Thanks KEN
