Gene Pitney - If I Didn't Have A Dime Lyrics
If I didn't have a dime and I didn't take the time
To play the jukebox
Oh, oh Saturday night would've been a sad and lonely night
For me
And if you weren't standin' there ruby lips and golden hair
O'h, oh I'd have lost my chance to hold you while you danced
With me,
Mm - mm
While the records turn (and turn) and turn (and turn)
We danced (we danced) and learned (and learned)
Our hearts (our hearts) had yearned (had yearned) for this
Neath the moon we walked (we walked) and walked (and walked) and talked (and talked)
Of love (of love) and then we kiss--ed
That little jukebox
Oh, oh love songs that they sing wouldn't mean a single thing
Even though you're standing there ruby lips and golden hair
If I didn't have a dime and I didn't take the time
To play the jukebox
Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm
Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm
Mm-mm-mm-mm
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Now with every sweet caress oh, my darling how I bless
That little jukebox
Oh, oh love songs that they sing wouldn't mean a single thing
Even though you're standing there ruby lips and golden hair
If I didn't have a dime and I didn't take the time
To play the jukebox
Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm
Mm-mm-[fade]

Gene Pitney If I Didn't Have A Dime Comments
I have many happy memories of meeting Gene back in the 60's, the loveliest guy ever with the wackiest sense of humour! :)
What a gentleman and brilliant singer loved all of his songs and met him in person at batley variety club yorkshire
My favourite GP song just amazing
1960's memories.... This is the first song I learned to play.... with my first guitar I was 14.... three chords E,A,D.... I had one week to learn it & the chords.... my fingers bled.... it changed my life forever.... it inspired me to love music.... to love live performances.... Thank you Gene Pitney.... your legacy is truly inspirational....
👏👍👌😍🙏
Such. a beautiful singer loved him from the first time I heard him.
Thank you Gene
Pure gold by a great artist .maybe we will get to meet him on the other side
What a voice! He was right up there with Roy Orbison, Harry Nilsson, and Jay Black.
Gene Pitney was one of the most underrated singers ever, Britain adored him, and he had a powerful God given voice, outstanding!
I was working in Namibia about ten years ago and the local people asked if they could play some music in the office while they worked. I agreed but I was astonished when they played Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Abba, Gene Pitney, Al Martino, Tom Jones etc music. They knew them all! (I was surprised because there was no way they understood the words as they couldn't speak English!!). They reckoned the music was great!!
2019 and still brings memories of my late mother...RIP MUM
Love this song .
Me too.
A performer of this calibre doesn't have to twerk, rub his rear end on people, grab his crotch or jump around acting like a fool. They stand, sing with such talent and heartfelt emotion that only normal people can understand and appreciate their talent. Young people of today listening to garbage like rap will never understand.
OH OH OH MERCY!!!!!LOVING LOVING.
Hunk with a sexy sexy voice can't get any better Hmmmmmmm!!!!!
Saw him in person and he was great, such a wonderful voice. Gone too soon.
I've been listening to Gene Pitney since my high school days and I've never heard this song before. Now I can't stop listening to it. Nice song. Rest in peace, Mr Pitney. You have no idea how much you are missed.
An infectious melody.....was so happy to hear him sing it live in concert....not a big hit....but so memorable...
Just love it, my lord what a voice.
I remember my first time playing a juke box
A classic
Im 12 and i love this
Myrtle Beach has changed, not sure if it's for the better but ya can't go back to '65-70. Now where did zi put that darn time machine?
Not the highest of chart positions in UK ,but my favorite of Gene Pitney

70 people didn't have a dime for the jukebox
This was the first record I ever played on a Juke Box. It cost me 3d. (that's 1.5p for the younger generation who might read this). Memories are what we are....great...
Hi what attest song
What a legend a true artist
X this song reminds me of a girl I had a relationship with great song and singer.
Thanks for all your classic gene your music live on most of all memory 😢
Love, love, love this man's superb voice and overall talent. Never tire of listening to his songs.
Update: The young lady I met at Myrtle Beach S.C. is alive and well.
What would we have done without the jukebox? Sweet memories.
wow proud to be British great song one UK greatest golden oldies
According to GP discography " Juke Box" was just a B side song
but turned out to be a " Beach Music " classic these days
this is when youve lost in life
Beach music classic
FYI, am 70 now and still have several of the 45s that this song was on 1 side. Some are simply worn smooth.
I loved Gene growing up and still do I am 41
This tune is a lesser known Carolina beach music song. It's a great song to bop, not shag, to. Go Ocean Drive!
Thanks to youtube I can now again enjoy this wonderful man's music. Really loved watching a young Gene singing 'That Girl Belongs To Yesterday'. What a treat. Makes my day ... every day.
Perfect song.
maybe my favorite Pitney song catchy tune from the very underrated Mr. p. handsome Ron also very underrated
Bien sûr , on préfère souvent l'original , mais la version française par Sheila et Akim (devant le juke-box) n'est pas mal non plus ;
MY 15 YEAR, BEAUTIFUL PERIOD,
Jesus if u didn't have dime what a fuckin deadly song gene Pitney was well up their some songs play n heaven deadly finish to this song😢😢😢😢😢😢😢rip gene Pitney powerful
Love this song by Gene but it brings back memories for all the wrong reasons. I was listening to this song while having breakfast before going to school when an announcement came on the radio that President Kennedy had been assassinated.
gene is to good rip
Every Jukebox needs Gene Pitney records .
I totally agree. Should be a law stating it.
Funny you should say that. I was in Switzerland in the 60's and in a small cafe on a mountain side there was a very small juke box - it had just 3 choices Elvis Presley, a local song and Gene Pitney singing If I only had a dime for the juke box. :-)
love this singer his music brings back all the memories. thanks for posting.
memory of juke box absolute gold
Oh memories of Triggs.....
the brilliant mr Pitney
Great number. Those were the days when beautiful songs were sung and played on everyone's mind.
I love that song, i think its abaut 40 years ago i hear it first time.
Love it, still love the coed I met and tried to dance with her all night. Four Spring Breaks, dancing with her to this song, finding love and loosing it hurts, still can see her.
One of the lesser known Carolina beach music tunes. Bop 'til you drop.
A great song performed by a great singer! Miss him!
Love, love, love Gene Pitney. Greatest voice ever. Dreama
Dreama, Bullins Gene Very Good e immenso grande artista, sarai sempre ricordato,,
Beautiful. This was the B side of Only love can Break a Heart.
I don't remember hearing this song before....it's lovely!!!
Indeed! Gene is great of course but I wonder why this gem has never been covered by anyone else. It's over fifty years old and practically sings itself. Sure beats the nickel in the nickelodeon.
It sounds like a music box as well. Very original
I miss these real love songs
Sing to me
Loved his songs growing up in the 60s-I met him while I was working the grave shift at a small mom and pop store back in 1976-he was traveling to do a show in Allentown Pennsylvania and he stopped for some Dristan Sinus Medicine cause he had a bad headache-he purchased the medication-a pack of Juicy Fruit Gum-a Butterscotch TastyKake Krimpet and a Ma's Old Fashioned Can of ice tea-he pulled out a $5 Bill and signed it and gave it to me-Dear God I still treasure that $5-RIP-Gene-Paul was here-04-28-16.
Very, very cool story.
Love him! beautiful song thanks for sharing!
Brilliant song
💵💲💰SUPER SONG FROM GENE PITNEY LIZ 2016 💰💵💲
Liz Doyle
what a legend!!!!!! so so missed!!!!!! R.I.P Gene....
Here's some obscure trivia:
On this day in 1946 {January 30th} the U.S. Treasury Department issued for the first time the Franklin D. Roosevelt dime; it replaced the Winged Liberty Head (of Mercury) dime, which had been in circulation since 1916..
And sixteen years later in 1962 Gene Pitney used one of those dimes; on August 26th, 1962 his "If I Didn't Have A Dime (To Play the Jukebox)" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #99; five weeks later on September 30th it would peak at #58 {for 1 week} and it stayed on the chart for 7 weeks...
The record's A-side, "Only Love Can Break A Heart", peaked at #2 {for 1 week}; and the record that kept him out of the top spot was one of his own compositions, "He's A Rebel" by the Crystals...
Sadly, Gene Pitney passed away on April 5th, 2006 at the young age of 66 {heart disease}...
May he R.I.P.
Saw Gene live in England he is number two on my list of greatest singers first is Roy O

. si yo tuviera una monedita
Wonderful singer, wonderful song. First I heard this song from Frida Boccara in French (Je suis perdue = I'm alone).
Gene Pitney was one of the greats. Loved all of his music!
Struggente nei ricordi
If I didn't have a dime was the original a side. Radio DJs flipped the record and the rest became history. In most of the overseas markets, it remained the a side.
Stupenda.
Grandissima persona!!!Grande ARTISTA!!! Riposa in pace Grande GENE!!!
Gene e un grande
most of him song have girl voice - that is what i like
Roy number 1 Gene number 2
first heard this while I was in Canada I was with a loverly girl called Debbie and played it constantly brill night.
hele mooie muziek, hebben wij een mooie dans op
Great melody, never heard this one,,,,
Gene Pitney, after Elvis, the most emotive white singer to grab my attention as a 12 yr. old music fan. It wasn't cool to be a Pitney fan in 1964/65, but along with my Beatles and Stones and Pretty Things LPs, I bought all of Gene's because I just loved his distinctive singing style. Will always be a fan and this song is my favourite of his.
También Earl Grant, Andy Williams, Ronnie Savoy.Que bueno!! Chao.
before Elvis!
I'm surprised this was never one of his big hits. I love it.
forshore one of my favourite songs ,thanks for sharing it.
what a sweet tune so innocent love the lyrics and beat not a nigga or mother fu@%$@ in it at all so refreshing
I knew the Pitneys, went to school with Gene and Lynne's kids. Great people and great music. They never played the celebrity card. Just good folks. Always appreciated Gene's songwriting, especially, and all of the hits, though was more into the psyche/hard rock/punk stuff from 60s/70s but just listened to "If I didn't have a dime..." and was blown away. Back to listening to it all again with new ears. Love ya Gene and all the Pitneys. Robbie Halpin
Wow Rob Halpin- I am here in Australia and as well as loving Gene Pitney songs- saw him as a humble gentleman too..
