Gene Pitney - Hello Mary Lou Lyrics

Hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou I'm so in love with you.
I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part
So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart.

You passed me by one sunny day
Flashed those big brown eyes my way
And oh I wanted you for ever more.
Now I'm not one that's get around
I swear my feet's stuck to the ground
And though I never did meet you before,
I said:

Hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou I'm so in love with you.
I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part
So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart.

I saw your lips, I heard your voice
Believe me I just had no choice
Wild horses couldn't make me stay away
I thought about a moonlit night
My arms around you good and tight
That's all I had to see for me to say
Hey,hey,hey.
Hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou I'm so in love with you.
I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part
So hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart.

So hello Mary Lou goodbye heart
Well hello Mary Lou goodbye heart
Yes hello Mary Lou goodbye heart.

Pitney toured Australia many times, as did Roy Orbison. Roy said in the middle to late 60's Australia was the only place where he could sell records.

    very nice version!

I'll agree with tonithenigthtowl. Pitney may have written it but the combination of Ricky Nelson and James Burton put it over the top.

But that also doesn't take anything away from the Rockville Rocket he will always have his place in the ground base of Rock and Roll

@CooleGuy Gary you do know Gene wrote this? But I agree, it may not have been a huge hit had not Ricky Nelson recorded it. Gene said he thought Nelson's version was primo. Same with Rubber Ball, and He's a Rebel. They may not have had the same impact had he kept them for himself. His huge hits were written just for him, by the likes of Hal & Burt. Mann and Weil. His voice required very sophisticated music.

@CooleGuy Hmmm well, while not a Pitney original, isn't like he was off key. I agree, there are times when only the original will do. Of course now I will see if I can find your video, and then I will get back to you and tell you if you were being conceited or not.

Had tickets to see Gene Pitney on tour at the Colston Hall in Bristol,
but he died the night before after a show in Cardiff, had seen him
a couple of times before and loved all his hits. Have to say, much prefer
the Ricky Nelson version of this song.

So was one night away from seeing him on that tour, 24 hours from Bristol.

the guitar break is really pathetic

Fuck, you got "Elvis Presley - Sentimental Me" among your favorites lol, what's harsher than that? Just about anything. AHAHAHAH
Oh and by the way, Elvis was a clown. The real king of rockabilly was and will always be the great Eddie Cochran, man.

@ezekielwahwah Yes well you're allowed to sound anyway you like if you write the song. Slimy and viscid is very harsh.
