Gaye, Marvin - When I'm Alone I Cry Lyrics

Laughin' loud out with the crowd
Is just one way I try
To hide my gloom
But in my room
When I'm alone
I cry

I confess, I do my best
To show them I'm the guy
I wear a smile, but all the while
When I'm alone
I cry

Pretending I don't miss her
It's all that's left to do
Somehow I'm sure
She'll come back no more,
The rest is up to you

Smile my heart and play the part
Though deep inside we know,
It's all a game, but all the same
When I'm alone
I cry

Pretending I don't miss her
It's all, it's all that's left to do
Somehow I'm sure
She'll come back no more
The rest is up to you, dear

Smile my heart, and play the part
Though deep inside we know
It's all a game, but juts the same
The truth must never show
On you

I realize my heart you know why
When I'm alone...
I, I cry

Wow! Marvin's early music was very different from what he'd become famous for. I wonder if Motown was trying to market him as a "Nat King Cole" for their label. This was still a popular sound of the early '60s before the "Motown Sound" took off. The easy-listening/vocal standards music of the '50s was still holding it's popularity into the early '60s. This is a beautiful song, but it's good that Marvin became more hip with the changing times. All the way into the 1980s, he kept his sophistication. A legendary class act.

Sometimes it hurts so much and there is nothing left to do but cry openly or silently inside.

  3. J.... ....

The older I get the more I understand the depth and nuances of his voice which makes me appreciate his music more than I already thought I did.

    The Prince of Motown.

*I remember my dad playing this when i was 5-6 when he was upset after a little sad time with my mom.She heard him playing it and they talked it out all because he tried and she knew he always did.Back in the day it was love but now......some don't know real love and rather stab your heart before they love and fix it.....* 😥💔😭 #igavemyall

The thing is you always hope for the best and try so much but they still hurt you so bad.

Beautiful song. This song resonates in my life right now.

    s.... s....

    Me too right now.

  7. S.... B....

Marvin and Mickey had the same vision

Best crooner was Sam Cooke.Marvin grew up on Cooke. He asked to play Cooke.added the E like Cooke..By the time Sam began to sing pop, soul, jazz or anything else, he had already crushed the gospel field, and was a star in everybodies home, to include Marvin's. For by far,.gospel influnced almost all blk homes during the "Golden Age Of Gospel".And almost effortless.Sam crossed over to a broader audience. His sound was so powerful in the late 50's early 60's..It was everywhere to include the Oscars

Marvin Gaye was Truly a student of Frank Sinatra & Sam Cooke!!! :-)

    l.... ....

James Hughey Frank Sinatra was a student of ours regardless

larrycancooke2 exactly! SAM COOKE'S effortless sounds were more mainstreamed, as Marvin G too today, still reigns both two tails of two kings of universal music.🎶🌏.👍

This and the other original songs on the album of the same name, were also the first manifestations of Gordy's then-new ASCAP-affiliated publisher, Stein & Van Stock, Inc., for the purpose of publishing songs that were more of a "standards" vein than "The Motown Sound." S&VS's most famous copyright ended up being "For Once in My Life," based on Tony Bennett's 1967 recording (a year before Stevie Wonder's uptempo recasting).

This is Marvin's wonderful longing to be a ;jazz artist' against the dismay of Berry Gordy... but he went on after Motown to disprove Gody and leave his fornominal impact on music and the World... luv U Marvin!!!!

Kim, I never knew Marvin attempted jazz, jazz is my first love, I would have killed for that album, what a surprise find for me.

@trazzy01 But yes he also loved Nat King Cole, just like everyone else with ears did, whether they admited it or not. Billie's 'Lady In Satin' album was another record that had a deep effect on him. He really connected with the soul she infused in those songs. He could relate it to the idea of how an artist sacrifices his life for the listener. He would later go so to say "An artist pays the price so you don't have to pay..."

  12. b.... ....

@trazzy01 One of his earliest influences was Clyde McPhatter, who was lead singer of the Doo Wop group, Billy Ward and The Dominoes. Marvin was obsessed with the way Clyde sang 'Harbour Lights'. It had a profound impact on him.

  13. b.... ....

@trazzy01 Actually his favourite singer was Jimmy Scott. When he went on exile in Europe, the only album he took with him is 'Falling In Love I Wonderful'. He also loved Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr (he wrote an album for him), Barbra Streisand (he wanted to duet with her but it didn't work out), Nancy Wilson, Aretha Franklin (he called her the greatest, and wanted to record with her for historical purposes), Sam Cooke (he was offered the role to play him), Wilson Pickett, J. Taylor.

Today i cried, marvin was there

  15. T.... M....

M.J. was a great singer when he was a little boy, sang like a grown man!!! in his later years he lost his great sing voice and came up with that very weak style of so called singing....!!!M.J. was a great entertainer and the best dancer out there, but marvin was a better singer period and could play the piano and sang songs from his soul!!! Mike made a lot of songs that were just no soul to them,no feeling.. Nat king Cole was his fav. singer and was the best crooner of all time period!!!

  16. 9.... ....

    the master singer

  17. n.... ....

@rebelabyss He did include Sinatra in his repertoire of crooners.

  18. n.... ....

@SBP519 They were both great. They just had entirely different styles. Marvin liked MJ and his brothers, and all of the brothers were big fans of Marvin's.

  19. c.... ....

Mr.Marvin Gaye, Stands in a Class all by Himself!!! sinatra,dean,beatles,beachboys,elvis,etc.. all wanted to sound and look like Mr.Marvin Gaye and the entire MoTown Sound, that's why they substitued it by stealing their music, moves and watered down their grooves. But,that the nature of the BEAST!

  20. s.... ....

Originally, this was when Marvin wanted to be a jazz crooner like Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Sammy Davis, Jr. Though it was overlooked, this is a sweet tune.

  21. t.... ....

I need this song, let's swap! I'll give you some Sam for some Marvin or Little Willie John.Deal?
