Gaye, Marvin - Teach Me Tonight Lyrics

Did you say I've got a lot to learn?
Well, don't think I'm trying not to learn
Since this is the perfect spot to learn
Teach me tonight

Starting with the ABC of it
Right down to the XYZ of it
Help me solve the mystery of it
Teach me tonight

The sky's a blackboard high above you
If a shooting star goes by
I'll use that star to write "I love you"
1000 times across the sky

One thing isn't very clear, my love
Should the teacher stand so near, my love?
Graduation's almost here, my love
Teach me tonight

First time hearing this one!! OMGoodness!! Such a beautiful song!! Love myself some Marvi Gaye and Ms Beautiful Kim Weston!! I'm in love with this song now!! Thanks for posting!!

    M.... ....

You are very welcome! I'm glad you like this one and find it beautiful; I agree with you completely on that. Most times, when you hear about Motown, it's the up tempo, dance tunes that most think of. That was their bread and butter, but Motown was about far more than one type of music. This is one of the really great examples of just how wide that world of music was at the company.

Dr. Doo Wop, I'm back again can't get enough of Kim's voice. Don't get me wrong I love Marvin however, no one else could have sang this quite like Kim. God Bless

again! Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston gets down. thanks!

Hi Lois. I love the chemistry between Marvin and Kim.  For me, theirs is vibe like when Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong would duet together.  There, you had two seasoned jazz artists who knew their craft and had could sing a song with authority, but have fun with the music at the same time.  Marvin and Kim both had voices that could do R&B and Jazz/Blues as well as standards- but they sang with fun as well.

  9. T.... M....

Anyone else think that The Supremes are singing background vocals? Flo's voice is very distinct and it sure sounds like her as the strongest of the background vocalists.

  10. I.... S....

I always felt Marvin's duets w/ the lovely Kim Weston were vastly underrated. One listen to the album and I felt it was as good as anything he did with Tammi. That's saying a lot, I know. But I always feel a deep sense of sentimentality being invoked listening to the Take Two album. This song was a bonus track on the CD but it would have fit quite nicely on the LP regardless back then.

    I.... S....

+Invisible Sun I feel like you do about the Kim & Marvin duets. I think you may have hit on the distinct differences between what Marvin and Kim did versus Marvin and Tammi. "Sentimentality." There is a quality about Kim's style that is very mature in nature- she is more like a Jazz artist than a pop artist. Kim's voice was excellent on the standards like this song and the entire album has a sort of Jazz-by-Motown sort of sentimental vibe. You sat, listened and appreciated this music.

By contrast, Marvin and Tammi went for the gut. Their music was 100% in the Motown Sound mold, more immediate, raw and sexy. They went all out on those albums, with Tammi having that "sex kitten" style. Had Kim recorded other duets with Marin post '65, they may have had more of a Motown Sound like "It Takes Two" that would have revealed a more rockin' style like the Marvin / Tammi duets. Have you heard "Baby Don't Leave Me?" That one rocks and probably would have been another pretty good hit.

    I.... S....

I agree completely. I have listened to a lot of the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell duets as they are more well known. BUT, after spending some time listen to the Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston duets tonight - I am just freaking blown away - they are SO DAMN GOOD! I can't believe I never spent time listen to his duets with Kim Weston before tonight!

  11. V.... S....

This is my favorite Marvin and Kim tune. Thank you Kim

@tomovox   Just heard it for the first time last night. I heard other versions of it, but this one is by far the most heartfelt : )

Hello Gillie! This blows me away, no matter how many times I play it. The interplay between Kim and Marvin is priceless and genuinely sincere, especially near the end when they're speaking; THAT is beyond incredible.

I'm already melting listening to this playing!

A Big Hello, Nonstop! I think it's great when soul or rock artists do material like this because it broadens your musical horizons. I was blown away that Kim and Marvin were so good on these types of songs.

    Glad to have you aboard!

  16. n.... ....

    my favorite version. thanks

  17. D.... M....

That's a good way to describe it! I love it when Motown had their artists do standards like this, and Kim and Marvin are just so good on this.

  18. n.... f....

This song is between jazzy and soulful, I dig .

  19. b.... ....

    セクシャル!!マービン・ゲイ、最愛のタミー・テレルとのデュエットが一番の定評だが、やっぱりこのさらっとしたキム・ウェストンとの"TeachMeTonight"が忘れ難いネ!

  20. D.... M....

@TheMotownjunkie Hello and thanks for that great comment! I know what you mean because listening to Kim and Marvin on this seems to block out all the cares of the day. At least Kim seems to be getting lots of props here on you tube!

  21. T.... ....

I love this version of the song! It puts me in a good place lol Wish Kim Weston got more recognition than she did!!

  23. D.... M....

@gfks11 PS. I had to chuckle at your take on this "clean" version! Well, it was supposed to be "The Sound Of Young America" so I'm sure they had that in mind when recording it! lol and thanks very much for your wonderful comments!

  24. D.... M....

@gfks11 Motown was very good about having its artists cover non-rock and roll songs and Marvin recorded quite a few albums from the start- all with the intent of becoming a crooner like Sinatra and Cole. Kim Weston is unfourtunately unknown to many which is a shame. She easily went from soul to jazz in seconds flat and had Motown known what to do with her she could have had a much bigger profile.

  25. D.... M....

Yes indeed they were. The Marvin and Tammi recordings are of course brilliant, but the Marvin and Kim pairing has a life all it's own as well. They truly had such a fantastic chemistry that worked well on recordings. I only wish Motown had done more to promote her!

  26. D.... M....

Hi Dawsy! Some of them take a couple of days, some a couple of weeks! Mainly because I'm doing them in whatever kind of spare time I can find, which is usually arond midnight! lol! It's fun doing these though especially because I always felt like I was the only one who liked this music- HA!!! Finding You Tube was like finally finding the club where you fit in! I'm glad you like this and that you posted- Thanks!

  27. D.... M....

I get the ideas for these from a few places and you picked up on one of them! I love some of those older movie opening sequences as well as the trailers/promos. Sometimes it's a fantastic commercial with a lot of quick visuals. I see those and think how well the style would work for visuals with music. You've got a great eye, because I try to make some of these like a little promotional trailer to really showcase the singers and music. So, thanks for the great comment!

  28. 5.... ....

like a 60s moovietrailer! its totally lovely made tomovox. and the song is great,

  29. S.... D....

    Love this song, production,etc.

Fantastic presentation, it must have taken ages to do?

    Thanks for sharing

  30. D.... M....

Yes, that was a very, VERY upbeat version! lol! That's the one I heard first and didn't realize it was actually a standard. I like both versions though- this one because again, it showed how amazing these people were in being able to handle different types of music and doing it so well.
