Gaye, Marvin - One More Heartache Lyrics

One more heartache, I can't take it
My heart is carryin' such a heavy load
One more ache would break it
Just like the camel with the heavy back
One last straw was added, they say it broke the camel's back

Ah (ah) ah (ah)
I can't take it, I can't stand it

One more heartache, it would turn me right around
First you build my hopes up high and then you let me down
Like the house you built from toothpicks stacked upon the kitchen table
One last toothpick tore it down; the foundation was not able

Ah (ah) ah (ah)
I can't take it, I can't stand it
No no no baby

Oh baby, one more heartache would be too much load
I'm fed up with the heartaches; one more and I will explode
Like the toy balloon that's filled with as much air as it can take
One more puff of air and that balloon has got to burst

Ah (ah) ah (ah)
I can't take it, I can't stand it
No, honey, not another
[...and fade]

Definitely has kin to his AIN'T THAT PECULIAR? that came a year earlier

  6. S.... P....

    He was superb

  7. D.... M....

The difference I noticed between his original version on "Moods of Marvin Gaye" and the single version heard here is that on the former he was learning the song, on the latter he was living the song (great big difference). This record has the nastiest guitar riff and a chorus that is pure genius. This should be played way more often.

As the saying goes, "some of us were just a THOUGHT in our father's nut-sack." But still, I am GLAD to be here!  This was what is called "raw" talent. And brotha Marvin had it!

I am familiar with quite a bit of Marvin's stuff, don't recall this song. It is outstanding. Actually found this song while listening to Paul Butterfield Blues Band live at Monterrey. Of course, Paul's version is very different.

Great song all around, but I especially like The Andantes backing vocals.

  35. G.... E....

Perfect song for Marvin Gaye. And the Funk Brothers in their prime. One of my very favorite Marvin Gaye songs

  36. G.... E....

It was probably when I was 8 in 1964 that first saw Marvin Gaye. I loved his songs and he always seemed like such a nice man. Then in 1971 i see this guy with a beard on the Whats Going On album when I was almost 15 and I thought I hope he hasn't changed, that he's still a nice guy. I know that sounds dumb. I borrowed that album from a friend and because of my dad was standing over my shoulder, making sure i wouldn't blow off my homework which is what I liked to do, I couldn't play it till bedtime. I had a small record player and i couldn't play it too loud because if my father heard me still up he would have beaten the shit out of me, which he did on a regular basis. I turned out my light and I was transported to just a gorgeous world of music!!! It blew my mind. Marvin Gaye cared about everyone. EVERYONE. I believe he was right, God was with him when he was making that masterpiece. It will always be my favorite album.

  37. M.... J....

Some people really can't take ONE MORE HEART ACHE!

  38. N.... ....

"....one last toothpick tore it down the foundation was not able". Damn what a phrase . Marvinistic.

    N.... ....

NkrumahTure that was William"Smoky" Robinson that wrote those words...

  39. T.... P....

One of his best, to be sure.

  40. k.... ....

Released in January 1966 on Motown's Tamla Records Label as Tamla 54129

  41. D.... d....

Throughout the 60s, Marvin proved that if any of Motown's in-house staffers had a good song, he could make it into a classic, and he did exactly so with material by William Stevenson, Berry Gordy, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Smokey Robinson, Ashford & Simpson, and Norman Whitfield. It took till "What's Going On" for the press to really wake up to the genius Gaye was, but those of us who were enthralled and buying up his  versatility in the 60s, Marvin's magnum opus wasn't a surprise.

    D.... d....

    Very true.

    D.... d....

Marvin was writing/Co-writing hits, and playing drums on Motown recordings long before he produced the Originals, and himself (in the late 60's, early 70's), as well. Of course, Smokey always maintained: Marvin was a producer on on his songs, whether he got credit or not. Lol

  42. N.... F....

I was in third grade when this song was first out. I still love this song 48 years later.

  43. m.... ....

        Outstanding !

  44. C.... F....

    His best 60s song.

  45. r.... ....

I was in First Grade when this came out, and one of my favorite songs although at 6 years old you don't always know the title (or artist) who sings the songs you hear on the radio. Fast forward to twelve years later, when as a freshman in college I borrowed a dorm neighbor's copy of Marvin Gaye's Anthology collection. As I looked at the titles I recognized several of them as I had "The Motown Story" 5-Record set; when began to play the LPs, a flood of memories came rushing back as I heard songs that I had stored away in my mind but didn't know who they were by! "One More Heartache" was the one I had missed the most over the years and whereas I had only collected Stevie Wonder records up to that point, my scope changed to cover all of Motown.

    r.... ....

I remember this when it was a hit on the radio! I remember laying on the couch eating chicken noodle soup and listening to the radio and I heard it for the first time. I was trying to get over the flu

    r.... ....

I was only 8 when this song first came out. This is my favorite Marvin Gaye song.

  46. f.... ....

    It's my fav Marvin single.

    f.... ....

    I have to agree

    f.... ....

I like that part near the when he goes to church at 2:39. I also like how Jamerson slurred that note at .11 seconds.

  47. C.... S....

    entered Vancouver's CKLG chart February 12, 1966

  48. r.... d....

The Late Marv Tarplin Playin' the Hell Out Of That Guitar!

  50. n.... ....

I was in third grade when this song was out. I just love this song!

  51. h.... ....

Further proof that more that just one member of the Miracles wrote great songs. Marvin Tarplin, Bobby Rogers, Pete Moore are all co-writers on this great tune. I have been singing it in my head the last few days, and just had to hear it with my ears!! Now I'm moving on to Take This Heart of Mine by Marvin Gaye.

  52. w.... ....

Written by ROBINSON, TARPLIN, ROGERS, and MOORE of THE MIRACLES, and featuring MARV TARPLIN on guitar.

This brings back memories of a summer vacation, riding in a "station wagon" with my 4 siblings and parents. Driving from the San Francisco Bay Area to Los Angeles, CA to visit cousins, then on to Phoenix, Az to see our Grandparents, with bags of fried chicken, ham, cookies, bread, chips, soda's etc.. I can feel the "heat" now as I listen to whoever was jamming on that tambourine on this song. My Dad played this on his new 8-track. LOL. Thanks for the song and the memories!!!!
