Gauthier, Mary - Walking Each Other Home Lyrics

I'm just now getting round to letting go
But you had your suitcase packed a long time ago
The road got rough and you got ahead of me
I tried to pull you back, now I know you had to leave

We put each other through a world of hurt
Maybe that's the way it is on this side of the dirt
Nobody wants to be alone
I hope you're happy now, I heard you found someone

I don't know how this story's supposed to go
I don't know a lot of things that other people know
But it ain't about the money, ain't about who's right or wrong
We're all just walking each other home

Somewhere between Cain and Able, that's where we live
It's only human to take more than you give
To reach for a fix to fill you up
Take away the pain oh but that's not love

I don't know how this story's supposed to go
I don't know a lot of things that other people know
It ain't about the money ain't about who's right or wrong
We're all just walking each other home

Ain't for me to say what's bad or good In the end
I know we did the best we could

I don't know how this story's supposed to go
I don't know a lot of things that other people know
It ain't about the money ain't about who's right or wrong
We're all just walking each other home

  5. Ton Wijnen

That’s what life is: walking each other home. In each and every relationship.

  6. Ron Johnson

I am just awe struck!!! Your tenor, your tone, and the ease with which you tell our hardships, relationships, and speak of the daily manusa life. I feel it it every bridge, cords and pause. Where have you been all my life. My ears, mind and soul have been waiting. Cheer's ♡♡♡

  7. A Attura

Makes a good poem. Song is laboriously slow

    Denise Salles

A Attura - it does seem a bit slow, but I tried increasing the playback speed to 1.25 and it sounded awful! I think the tempo might be part of the message - the tedium that sometimes strangles us.

    July 2018!

  9. S R

A poet of the the human experience.

  10. Roger Tanner

Thank you Bob Harris for introducing this brilliant artist to me.

I first heard Mary Gauthier in the days of CoolBlue 96.1. I thought "A Long Way to Fall" was right up there with the best songs I'd ever heard, but it never came up in suggested links on YouTube. I had to specifically search for it. Her writing has at least as much literary quality as Bob Dylan's, so she should qualify for a Nobel Prize.

  12. OsakaRose

Just discovered this lady. Damn, she's singing my life. How have I missed her for so long?

  13. Lewis R Mefford

One hand washes the other, Mary says it similarly!

  14. Damon Thompson

Such a beautiful and powerful song and artist! I so so so want to take one of her songwriting workshops. Thanks to Sirius xm Outlaw Country for turning me on to her music.

  15. Earthling Forever

Amazing, just amazing writer and interpreter of her own songs. It would do her an injustice to compare her to anyone else. Thank you Mary.

  16. Barbara Durkin

    Beautiful

  17. Joan Ellis

Greatest writer I have ever had the pleasure to hear. This young woman will be remembered long after she is gone.

  18. MsLock3

A female Kris Kristofferson  ..... beautiful songwriter, writes the words we feel and don't know how to say.  Love her songs.

    OsakaRose

Yes, I have to agree. She is a lot like Kristofferson. I love him. Her lyrics are as good as his!

I will admit that up until 8 weeks ago, I had never heard of Mary Gauthier. Then Swedish radio played one of Marys songs, and I was struck by the depth of the lyrics.  I have written many songs myself in a simular vein, and thought "just who is this Lady"?. So I did some research, and found she was touring Europe and the British Isles. I only wish I had known her music weeks before, as I would have travelled to see and hear her.  But I still think the best is yet to come, as more and more people discover this brilliant artist...Go Girl...

    Holdyour Plums

@Graham A Kyle Amazing, isn't she? I'd never heard of her until yesterday.  Driving the car, with BBC Radio 2 on & a track came on & blew me away. Had to stop the car & listen properly. Tracked her down from the album title & found this.
She deserves more recognition & has far more talent than most 'artists' around today.
