Gauthier, Mary - March 11, 1962 Lyrics
Hello, this is Mary, March 11, 1962
It took me forty years and five hundred dollars to find you
I know it's almost Christmas, I don't mean to make you cry
Now you ask me why I'm calling, I don't know why
If there's somethin' right to say right now, I don't know what it is
This is the hardest thing I've ever done and I'm terrified
Now you ask me why I'm calling, I don't know why
You say that I'm a secret and nobody knows
You can't talk about it now and really gotta go
You wish you'd a done it different then but you did not know how
And it's too late to change any of it now
I must have though about this moment 'bout a hundred thousand times
I guess somewhere deep inside o' me I knew I was a liar
Don't ask me why I'm calling, I don't know why
You say that you loved me but I'm a secret you can't tell
And the hole you hide in's wider than the waiting gates of hell
You wish you'd a done it different then but you did not know how
And it's too late to change any of it now
Look, I know we're strangers but we might just hurt the same
I'm not lookin' for "I'm sorry", I'm not lookin' to lay blame
I guess I had to thank you once, before this life went by
Yeah, that's why I called, goodbye

One of the best songs I've ever heard. Truly haunting and bittersweet.

Happy Birthday❤️🙏🎉
I love Mary's music and voice
Heartbreaking xo
Beautiful song
exquisite emotion.
I only discovered Mary a few weeks ago, but I am dumbfounded by her songs. Few writers, in any genre, match her depth and wisdom. I just listened to The Foundling for the first time, and it blew me away. Well done, Mary.
You were wonderful in Nashville. Paul Marhoefer said I missed a time. I hope to see you soon. Take care Mary. Oh by the way. Happy Belated Birthday
Not often moved by music but this song is wonderful. Thank you.
Appreciates her even though I was born March 12, 1984😉
A fantastically brilliant song. Breathtaking. Here are the lurics:
Hello, this is Mary.
March eleven, nineteen-sixty-two.
It took me five hundred dollars and forty years to find you.
I know it's almost Christmas,
I don't mean to make you cry.
Now you asked me why I called.
I don't know why.
Hello? Hello? Say something –
Don't leave me hanging here like this.
If there's something right to say right now
I don't know what it is.
This is the hardest thing I've ever done
And I'm terrified.
Now you ask me why I'm calling.
I don't know why.
You say that I'm a secret
And nobody knows
And you can't talk about it now and you really gotta' go
You wish you'd a' done it different then
But you did not know how
An' it's too late to change any of it now.
I must a' thought about this moment
'Bout a hundred thousand times
But I never could get past 'hello'
Or imagine what I'd find.
I guess somewhere deep inside of me
I knew I wasn't wise.
Don't ask me why I'm calling
I don't know why.
You say that you loved me
But I'm a secret you can't tell
And the hole you hide is wider
Than the waiting gates of Hell.
You wish you'd a' done it different then
But you did not know how
And it's too late to change any of it now.
Look, I know we're strangers
But we might just hurt the same
I'm not lookin' for 'I'm sorry'
I'm not lookin' to lay blame
I guess I had to thank you once
Before this life went by
Yeah – that's why I called. Goodbye.
Thank you for the lyrics, but if I may offer a correction,
"I guess somewhere deep inside of me
I knew I WAS A LIE."
Not "I knew I wasn't wise."
In een woord, prachtig !!
Love this. June 5, 1962.
Gary Jacobs love it too! June 13, 1960💕
This song makes me cry every time
This is the bravest song written and it is true
"You say I am a secret"
What a courageous song Mary. You deep soul searcher You. It is good that You called her
This song, indeed this album, deserves a wider audience. Highly recommended to all adoptees and adopters. All that pain has to go somewhere, and we should be grateful that Mary found a creative outlet for hers.
Thank you, Mary Gauthier. May God guide your footsteps.
