Gauthier, Mary - Drag Queens In Limousines Lyrics

I hated high school, I prayed it would end
The jocks and their girls, it was their world, I didn't fit in
Mama said, "Baby, it's the best school that money can buy
Hold your head up, be strong, c'mon Mary, try"

I stole mama's car on a Sunday and left home for good
Moved in with my friends in the city, in a bad neighborhood
Charles was a dancer, he loved the ballet
And Kimmy sold pot and read Keroac and Hemingway

Drag queens in limousines
Nuns in blue jeans
Dreamers with big dreams
All took me in

Charly and I flipped burgers to cover the rent
And Bourbons at Happy hour for .35 cents
One day before work we got drunk and danced in the rain
They fired us both
They said, "Don't y'all come back here again"

Drag queens in limousines
Nuns in blue jeans
Dreamers with big dreams
All took me in

My dad went to college, and he worked for the state
He never quit nothing and he wanted me to graduate
My brother and sister both play in the marching band
They tell me they miss me, but I know they don't understand

Sometimes you got do, what you gotta do
And hope that the people you love, will catch up with you
Yeah drag queens in limousines
Nuns in blue jeans
Dreamers with big dreams
Poets and AWOL marines
Actors and Bar Flys
Writers with Dark Eyes
Drunks that Philosophize

This song is already incredible, but the line "nuns in blue jeans" always makes me smile. My grandma was a working-class skilled laborer, after she left the convent. 💕

  9. A.... A....

Lugubrious. Labored. Would not be able to sit thru this.

    A.... A....

Maybe that's what it is. I thought maybe the guitar is too ordinary and just too much. The words are great. Her hair is awful. Call me homophobic. I just don't like to see a woman trying so hard to be a sloppy man. The violin is nice but hard to hear with all the trumming.

  10. S.... B....

This is new to me and I'm loving it.

  11. J.... K....

Mary, I love you. You are alright.

Mare meva, com he pogut desconèixer una artista tan descomunal com aquesta?

  18. I.... M....

My dad mentioned Mary Gauthier. Saying that she writes her songs well and describes her story through them. He wasn't lying. I'm not a big fan of country music, but I don't mind this.

  19. T.... ....

    Who is the fiddle player?

Love Mary! Great fiddle player and harmony vocalist, too. Anyone know her name?

    S.... L....

Tania Elizabeth is the fiddle player. She is currently touring with the Avett Brothers. 😊

  31. A.... D....

    stunning,honest,heartfelt music.thank you Mary Gauthier.Love it!!

    awesome

  33. C.... H....

It's odd. When I was young I was arrested at a sit-in at the South African embassy. We see how shining a bright light on a poor situation can help. I am not "intolerant" of your views Sir. I fought to guarantee that you are allowed them. Shining a light on them does not make anyone intolerant, just thoughtful. Semper Fie

Mary Gauthier is an amazing talent!! She can tell her story SO well!!

  38. S.... N....

Oh my...don't get any better than that...love it

  39. l.... ....

Victor you sound like a sad prat why don't you go on Youtube and sing us one of your songs  I bet you are real shite

  40. N.... P....

Amazing that some has to judge you cause they are so perfect, but even though you are not the greatest singer in the world, your touch places few can with the sincerity of your conversation and in the long run it made me nothing...if not completely human.   Thank you!

  41. A.... M....

    WOW! !!  Fabulous!!!

  42. K.... H....

je vais continuer à découvrir cette perle - ces deux perles !

  43. R.... ....

    great lyrics

  44. f.... ....

    Basically,

The story of my life, and probably many of us that came of age in the sixties and seventies.  Thank you, Mary.

    f.... ....

Me  too! (My high school was "the best money could buy", in the top 5 in the country. This song speaks to me and resonates!)

  45. M.... W....

Is it me or does she twist her phrasing the way Bob Dylan did when his voice was younger?

    M.... W....

Dylan was her influence. she said so in an interview. very dylaneske

  46. J.... S....

Story of survival behind this song... Love it...

  47. V.... E....

Despite her sexual proclivities, Mary is one of the best songwriters of the modern era. Her performances of her music are idiosyncratic and quirky, but overall, they are so real that you cannot deny the talent. She is a storyteller par excellance, akin to Woody Guthrie.

    V.... E....

I'm a lesbian myself and I sing and do a bit of writing too. "Despite"? Like, mate, what you trying to say? lol

    V.... E....

Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart and Noel Coward wrote a pretty good song too, "despite ...." Pinhead.

    V.... E....

Victor Edwards: despite being a bigot, you are right that Mary is one of the best songwriters of the modern era. Everything else you say is stupid.

    V.... E....

    Victor Edwards suck it bi#$&

    V.... E....

Victor, this song was written by Mary about having to leave behind her confortable life because of people like you. This is a song about being LGBT and facing persecution. You really can't appreciate it if you think less of people for the way they were born.

Thank you for providing the pain that lead her to write this beautiful song.

  48. d.... b....

    VERY NICE GREAT LYRICS

  62. P.... N....

I am in tears as I write this. She is not a songwriter, she is a poet, with an eye that sees the harshness, and a pen that renders it so beautiful..

  63. J.... H....

    Reminds me of John Prime.
