Gary Numan - Deadliner Lyrics

So I close my eyes and drift into sleep,
But something is here,
In the dark, in the dream.
Like a cruel wind clutching my heart,
I feel more than I see,
Like a clue to a nightmare that I can't believe.
Then it touches me and I try to scream,
And a thought tears me inside.
And I will do anything,
Anything, you understand?
Just to wake up.

Sometimes it almost makes me cry.
Sometimes it seems to call my name out loud.
Sometimes it feels like I'm alone
And then it comes for me again.

I'm told it's called the un-reality dream.
I'm told it's called the great American lie.
I'm told that this is like the vengeance of God.
I can't believe that God would do this to me.

I've known fear many times, but nothing like this.
I'm so scared I can't breathe.
I know I'm asleep, but I know this is real,
And no one can help me here.
I'm deep inside something, and I may never come back,
And then it was gone,
And then I realised that the rush brought it in,
And I will never sleep alone again.

Sometimes it almost breaks my heart.
Sometimes I swear I hear it laugh at me.
Sometimes it feels like I could die
And then it leaves my dreams again.

Feels like I'm fighting the possession of my soul.
I'm told that this is called the sickness of need.
I've got to cut the sex connection and slide
A word of warning to the weary and wise.

  1. F.... M....

One of my favourite Numan tracks.

I swear this album had a massive influence on the Trip-Hop that came out a year or two later. Tricky, in particular, listened to this album, and even this song, a hell of a lot, I suspect.

This album welcomed the comeback of Numan, the previous few Albums were crap in comparison...

I had s similar experience when I was younger when I got some Dennis Wheatly books out of the school library Over my teens and early 20;s even later I would sometimes have scary nights where I would be awake but asleep and I would feel as if something was trying to enter my body and possess me, I couldn't move untill minutes later and I would try and fight and hit whatever it is but it was gone, never could work out what it was though I was told never sleep on your back for too long,

  10. M.... J....

Numan is a secular materialist who doesn't believe in the supernatural last I knew.

........straight into dream. I felt a dark presence in there with me and I tried to wake up because it felt as if, if I didn´´t could die in the dream. When I finally opened my eyes the bed was saturated in sweat. I tried not to, but I feel asleep again and went straight into another nightmare similar to the first. Eventually I got out of that one, and each time I came out I was half screaming and unable to breath properly. It was as if a door had opened .... to dark subconsciopus"

My copy is by Eagle Records 1999.
On the first three booklet pages is something like a short-biography written by Steve Malins/Q-Magazine.

"The industrial trip hop of Deadliner is inspired by "the darkest nightmare of my life, which has stayed with me to this day.I´d gone back to my room after a show and, as I went to bed, I began to feel uneasy. It was as though something dark and brooding was watching me, a very scary, uncomfortable feeling.I lay down on my bed and went......

@MrToolUndertow I own a copy of the cleopatra 1998 release of this album with no story only lyrics. Please tell me more!?!?!?

  14. M.... ....

Inside the booklet is a scary story about this song. Something about a demon like shadow-cloud that appeared above his bed.

I can remember that the author Paulo Coelho talked about a similar story in relation to his past activities in a secret society.
It was part of a black magic incarnation ritus.
I think it was a OTO ritus but I´m not sure........................

  15. V.... E....
