Gary Moore - Over The Hills And Far Away Lyrics
They came for him one winter's night
Arrested, he was bound
They said there'd been a robbery
His pistol had been found
He waited till the dawn
And as they led him to the dock
He knew that he'd been wronged
You stand accused of robbery
He heard the bailiff say
He knew without an alibi
Tomorrow's light would mourn his freedom
Over the hills and far away
For ten long years he'll count the days
A prisoner's life for him there'll be
He knew that it would cost him dear
But yet he dare not say
Just where he'd been that fateful night
A secret it must stay
He had to fight back tears of rage
His heart beat like a drum
For with the wife of his best friend
He'd spent his final night of freedom
Over the hills and far away
He swears he will return one day
Far from the mountains and the seas
Back in her arms again he'll be
Over the hills and far away
Each night within his prison cell
He looks out through the bars
He reads the letters that she wrote
One day he'll know the taste of freedom
Over the hills and far away
She prays he will return one day
As sure as the rivers reach the seas
Back in his arms again she'll be
Over the hills and far away
He swears he will return one day
As sure as the river reach the sea
Back in his arms is where she'll be
Over the hills and far away
She prays he will return one day
As sure as the rivers reach the seas
Back in her arms is where he'll be
Over the hills
Over the hills and far away
Over the hills
Over the hills and far away

Gary Moore Over The Hills And Far Away Comments
I didnt know that Jeremy Clarkson played drums
Gary you were the best. Ahead of your time with the whole celtic revival thing. I'm toasting you and Phil tonight with a 12 year old red breast. Rock on you legends. Gone but not forgotten.
Met him once upon a time at Sunken Gardens back stage in San Antonio Texas cause a bandmate of mine worked for Stone city productions. Found him to be just a friendly regular guy, also love In The Fields with Phil. L. Still one of my favorite albums.
0:25 is that Jeremy Clarkson playing the drum in front of the rest?!
Gary Moore
Closing theme-nya acara Pemburu Hantu :D :D
Gary Moore brought me here!
An artist named Patty Gurdy plays this song on the hurdygurdy. She performs at Celtic festivals frequently.
3:58 he kinda looks like Rod Stewart. 😊😊
Why there is a young Jeremy Clarkson in this video?
not to talk ill of these guys but this video is some Spinal Tap shit..........not even "Intravenous De MIlo" bad, this is straight-up "Sand Which".
the best gary moore video ever, of course
gary moore is a true ROCK GOD.
This is the most 80iest of 80ies music videos. good lard.
Irish spirit! RIP Gary..
Where has this been all my life...
Waiting for you to find it :)
So in a weird round about way I found this. From Nightwish to Led Zeppelin to Gary Moore. What a journey this night was.
A little bit different than the album version. But I like it too. 🤟🤟😎😎
Good God the greatest of all Irish musicians, but such a pity the greatest one there is gone, RIP
So uh in the only one who found this through patty gurdy then?
The one and only Gary Moore..
Call me silly, to me he resembles Jim Jefferies in this video.
I have a theory about this song: The best friend who the man was banging the wife of found out about the affair, so the best friend stole his pistol and set him up to get revenge.
And Friday on my mind ? What's your theory there ? Best friend banging the wife on Fridays....and he found out, stole the pistol late Friday night and set him up by Monday ? Now he's still got the blues ?
Let’s set aside the Nightwish comments, how about there’s a huge moral to this song. if you dare to risk it all - be a man, and get ready to bare the consequences for the things you’ve done. Or just don’t let that extra taste of fun ruin it all...it’s your choice.
Great video 👍☺️🤘
Éireann go Brách
I named my guitar about Gary Moore ( My guitar's name : Moore )
Thanks for these masterpieces!
He is my idol long time ago.. ( and of course thanks for my Dad, He showed me this talented man.. I can't be grateful enough for it.. )
With a wife of his best... Friend?! How did I miss it for so many years! Omg!
So much for "best friend" 😂
This song packs more story, drama and excitement into 4 minutes and 20 seconds than modern Hollywood can in a two hour, multi-million dollar movie...
the start of the song is already putting it 100x better then anything currently out by todays standards :) i miss music like this.
Thank god night wish covered this.... this version is so shit..
increase speed to 1.25
Cliff richard could sing this song.....
c trop bi1 yael
Even though this is the original version. I like the Nightwish version better.
The solo is different.. :O
Me: *blasting this at 2am*
Neighbor: turn tuhat off
Me: why?
Neighbor: weve got bigger speakers here
..:) :) :) ..Well, play it again at Saturday's morning at 10am - it gotta work - I was 6-8 of age when it was top of charts in 1987-88 and it can't be mistake, it's a real classics!!!.. My uncle from Kuressaare played it in 1988, when I visited him with my parents and this is the bestest guitar solo I've ever heard!!!.. and haircuts were even same!! :)
@Arvi Remmelg sa oled eestlane
@Andreas Küünal: No, aga muidugi!!!... :)
@Arvi Remmelg is elan Annelinnas, ma ei vajanud tervet su elulugu
408 people suck. Millennials
The 12" version is still the best ............... https://youtu.be/6SgQUi9uJrc
possibly the most dynamic song i have ever heard, found this mans music very late, wish i found it a lot earlier
at least you found it. One of my favourite songs of all time.
thyrfing brought me here
Bob Daisley on the bass!
Bagpipes, violins and a strong and honest guitar, magnificent. I love the original version
Uilleann pipes, not bagpipes.
@J. B. Wherever
i love this song #finland
I came from Nightwish cover
legend rock!! Gary eternal
Love this song.
R.I.P such an amazing artist.

At long last, this mv is the evidence that the characters in this song had indeed a happy ending. I can now be at peace xD
Both this and whiskey in the jar shows what is Irish really are
I think Nightwish did the vocals better, but I can’t deny that these background instruments were superior.
The best Guitariest
It's a matter of whether you like it steely (Nightwish) or juicy (this performance). :)
Had this song in my head for hours as I’ve been laying here trying to fall asleep 😳.....
.....I just had to hear it. It’s been a minute. Probably my dads favorite guitarist next to Stevie Ray and Steve Lukather
Dad loved his signature 2 Tube Screamer setup and the legendary warm sound and tasty drive it produced.
Over the Hills and Far Away
For 10 long years I thought it was by Nightwish.
And so many people thinks this song was created by Nightwish...
Because they made it successful.
Ohh, man!... Can't you see already, Nightwish does only covers . This the best song you can ever heard from 1980's (see Wikipedia how rock music developed and second part of 1980's were culmination of rock-music).. At that time there was'nt no-youtube and no-internet to check it out, then you JUST knew what is the best by tale's and charts and people's had only LP's and tapes and few in Western-Europe had MTV but rest of Europe decided by quality of music by just hearing/listening to it and were imaging only what kind of that vid looks like and had only musicians posters on their bedroom walls (then there was'nt no Nightwish at all).. and this song lives forever in most people's heart.. ;) :) Greetings from Estonia, Tallinn!!!
Listening July 2019! Brings me back to age of 8! Thanks to my dad who was playing this at home 😍
The Irish lands... Over the hills and...
Gary Moore is the only guitarist who makes the guitar talk!
He makes it fucking singing!
I listened over the hills and far away by Nightwish. That's really awesome. Some one accidentally told me this song was actually sung by Gary Moore and I found it really impressive.
I was why this songs sounds familiar and i was oh fuck Nightwish
One of my biggest musical shames is I thought Nightwish did this first.
..this Nightwish can't even play blues-rock as Gary and they're just some millennials band but listen always 1980's roc-music first, then you realize from where your Nightwish takes their covers... This is the best and I was 6-7 of age in 1987-1988.. YoufNightwish just some 2000's copy-band, this hhd original and always will be.. 🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍
A guitarist guitarist
That's Paddy from the Chieftains on the Uillean Pipes...!
Completely underrated Song. Only 2 Mio views, its a Joke.
Swallow Tail Jig brought me to Nightwish, which then brought me here.. in 2019. Awesome!
a legend
I was addicted to Nightwish' version... But now that I found that, I reached the sky!
..That's correct!! It was top of the charts in Europe in 1987-1988 and your Nightwish were'nt even born yet and they are just copying and always listen original first... The best guitar-solo you'll ever heard and I was about 6-7 of age when my uncle played it from tape .. I will never forget it - the best solo.. 🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍👍
My opinion: better than what NightWish recreated
Of course - Gary is the best (by that time your Nightwish was'nt even born yet.. and this is the best you can hear at that time), look how the guitar Solo's were made in 1980's, this is the best!!!!
OK Guys, so the dude kicked the bucket, when and how and why? This shit is so cool, even if it took a toll on him, he should have kept doing what he was doing.Unless God called him home, then that's a different story.
gary died in 2011 from a heart attack while on holidays in spain
your telling me nightwish covered this??
Better than the nightwish cover. But the patty gurdy cover will always be my favorite.
I love how Gary fused his incredible guitar playing with his Irish roots music
cojonudo
nightwish version is better than this ,i thougt it was the original version!

Speed 1.25 is nightwish!! XD
love that snare line.
Fuck nightwish (:
Plot theory: his best friend was robbed in the ancient sense of the word, being murdered and since it was his pistol that had been found, he was assumed guilty of it; this is why his best friend was not there to defend him. His only defense would have been that he was sleeping with his best friend's wife at the time which would have gotten her executed. He runs away, escaping and vows to return to her again in the future.
Original one's is always the best. But interesting to hear from nightwish vers
Lol....... Gary Moore didn't write this. This isn't the "original".... it's a folk song as far back as the 1700's
mike mclaughlin Well do you have a link, so we can check this? The same title doesn’t mean it is the same song. We know Whiskey In The Jar is, but as far as I know Gary Moore wrote this one himself, and it’s got nothing to do with an old folk song dating from the past.
@Roelof Roelof lol.... there are no "links" to songs sung by leadbelly either, that doesn't him the originator of all those songs, either
mike mclaughlin Hm, not very convincing, sorry.
So remember kids, don't sleep with your best friends wife and leave your pistol at a crime scene.
I wonder where that kid from the video is now.
I did see him in a film on TV he was olser but easy recognisable
2nd part of whisky in the jar
I remember listening to this song back in 1987 when I was 18. I have no clue who nightwish are.
John Snow's dad. Unbelievably cool song BTW. First saw it on MTV when I was 10.
I reckon his best friend knew he was banging his missus & framed him
They came for him one winter's night
Arrested, he was bound
They said there'd been a robbery
His pistol had been found
They marched him to the station house
He waited till the dawn
And as they led him to the dock
He knew that he'd been wronged
You stand accused of robbery

Tomorrow's light would mourn his freedom
Over the hills and far away
For ten long years he'll count the days
Over the mountains and the seas
A prisoner's life for him there'll be
He knew that it would cost him dear
But yet he dare not say
Just where he'd been that fateful night
A secret it must stay
He had to fight back tears of rage
His heart beat like a drum
For with the wife of his best friend
He'd spent his final night of freedom
Over the hills and far away
He swears he will return one day
Far from the mountains and the seas
Back in her arms again he'll be
Over the hills and far away
[Solo de Guitarra]
Each night within his prison cell
He looks out through the bars
He reads the letters that she wrote
One day he'll know the taste of freedom
Over the hills and far away
She prays he will return one day

Over the hills and far away
Over the hills
Over the hills and far away
Timeless. So great sound and voice. Thanks for all your music, Gary Moore.
