Gabriel, Peter - We Do What We're Told Lyrics

milgram's 37

we do what we're told
we do what we're told
we do what we're told
told to do

we do what we're told
we do what we're told
we do what we're told
told to do

one doubt
one voice
one war
one truth
one dream

I'm here because of 'The Americans' too.... Brilliant series. Binge watching on Amazon Prime. Saw Season 6/1 at 3:30 am! Track seemed longer on screen. And Phillip's a Welshman too...
Hope 'Dead Hand' is NEVER activated....

  15. S.... M....

    MIAMI VICE drove me here...

  16. R.... R....

Back in the days I bought this CD same year 86, I'm still shocked by this song since then, I feel really lucky to live a great decade of music in my youth, I appreciate all kind of music of all times but I'm an 80's boy

  17. D.... E....

The film Compliance & Milgrams 37 took me back down memory lane. 👀 Peter perform at Greek Theatre 1981 !

Miami Vice brought me here, cool song

  21. A.... V....

Takes me back to my childhood years between ages of 12 & 16.. When Miami Vice aired. In Belgium we got showered with American series & programs. Chips, Mathew Star, Wonder Woman, Taxi, Mork & Mindy, Saterday night live, Dukes of Hazard, Night Rider.. Loved 'm all but Miami Vice topped them all. Probably the golden era of color tv up until mid 90s.

  22. R.... A....

A true commentary on today's society........We do what we're told.

  23. T.... C....

Miami Vice 🚤brougHt me Here again

  24. W.... T....

    Miami Viccce!!!! In the house!
    Love this song.
Actually, I already had the album back in the day lol.

But that Miami Vice scene with this song is excellent.

Check out the Miami Vice 'Evan' ep (not sure- bc Im getting old- but I think it was the opener scene) - the scene with 'The Rhythm of the Heat.'
    That was the ish.

  25. P.... B....

PG Tips....do what you're told....told to do. One truth...many many incarnations.

  26. K.... L....

    Brilliance under tension.

  27. A.... M....

a brilliant Symphony lasting about 3 minutes

  28. S.... ....

I had heard that this song was a response to people getting the idea that "Shock the Monkey" was about the Milgram Experiments. Can we get confirmation on this? Either way, this guy has such a way to express deep communication through sound. Stellar.

  29. C.... R....

The Chocolate War film got me into this track. Great film/soundtrack. Miss the 80's.

  30. j.... ....

The Americans, Miami Vice, but people seem to forget about "the chocolate war"

  31. A.... ....

1:38 - i feel like i try all my best to do what i was told will be good and it reveals its wrong. 1:46 - the murder is smiling. 1:57 - hes gone.

  32. O.... J....

Tubbs and Crockett... Best ever !!!!

  33. m.... ....

This hit from Peter Gabriel was heard on the Miami Vice episode, "Forgive Us Our Debts," which aired on December 12, 1986. Miami Vice will always be one of my favorite all time shows. It was the first to combine MTV with police action drama.

    m.... ....

This is how I found this song. Way ahead of its time.

    m.... ....

Brandon Tartikoff literally pitched the show at NBC's execs with the words "MTV Cops" written on a cocktail napkin.

    m.... ....

@billd66 i thought that was done by Anthony Yerkovich

  34. S.... C....

    Americans brought me here

  35. A.... M....

Reading more about what the song is about... DAMN this suits perfect to The Americans, and the moment it was used

  36. s.... ....

You know about Dead Hand now. YOU CAN'T BE ARRESTED.

  37. m.... ....

    Wow this is magical!

The Americans, Season 6 ep 1.

    R.... T....

I completely forgot about this song, first time I heard it was in Miami Vice.

    R.... T....

And a Russian commenting about it 🤔 seems fishy

Another good 1 Miami Vice soundtrack fans - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLf4C1UIpws

  41. L.... F....

I thought about one of my favorite shows when I heard this song again on The Americans.

  42. R.... B....

    Best song ever!

  43. T.... R....

Pretty haunting song, but I first heard it in a haunting context in The Americans. Any time I hear this, I'm going to picture Elizabeth's tired face and that cyanide pill.

  44. m.... ....

just heard this on the latest episode (Season 6 ep 10 ) of US TV spy drama "The Americans"...

  45. R.... M....

    The Americans!

    R.... M....

Look, i know we're culturally isolated here in the states. It's easy to be ignorant about the rest of the world here as there is hardly any pressure to learn about -- or even have any curiosity regarding -- how "the other half" live. It's rather, ahem... "sad". :-(

I do see the humor in your comment Mr. McIndy, but i think the result of Milgram's work (and not just the better-known experiments) speak to the whole human condition rather than just a specific sub-culture.

  46. W.... ....

Miami Vice (1984-1999) & The Americans (2013-2018) had one the best soundtracks, both shows have good taste in 1980’s music. The songs they choose sure takes me back to my childhood

  48. P.... F....

Here from The Americans Season 6 Episode 1. Gut wrenching stuff!!!!

Very powerful moment for the scene. It's about the epitome of putting music to a scene.

    The Americans

  51. T.... ....

    Came here from The Americans.

  52. F.... C....

Loved hearing this on The Americans. Such a fitting song for Elizabeth's character and a perfect nod to season 1's use of Games Without Frontiers.

Man, Peter Gabriel's was a genius. It worked so well in Miami Vice back in the day and it was perfect in The Americans.

    F.... C....

    it was so poweful

    F.... C....

Yep. To me the best of 1980s music was Peter Gabriel. I liked a lot of it, but to me he was a cut above.

    F.... C....

With Elizabeth finding out about this mission and not being able to tell Claudia or Philip about it. Powerful stuff man.

    F.... C....

    Absolutely agree!

    F.... C....

Thank God for the CMI! Best Drum Machine Evahhh. And it could play lead and pads, too! I reckon Gabriel was the only bloke to use MCL in pop music.

  58. J.... A....

I have one problem with song:

    It ends too soon.

  59. R.... M....

    This man......amazing.

  60. A.... N....

I just cannot get enough of MIAMI VICE!!!! I must have seen this one episode 3 times already. MV is the BEST!!! ♥ Cannot find such originality, character, drama, sometimes suspense, soundtrack, plots, clothing line, gorgeous men (tee-hee) as was this series.

  63. H.... -....

I'm in the process of reading Milgram's original, 1963 journal article now, and I decided to hop in the Wayback machine for a blast from the past. I've always loved this album.

I don't fault Peter in any way, but it would have been interesting to hear him give a more fully dilated examination of the experiment's findings and ramifications. It seems that the discussion of destructive obedience, coupled with the high percentage of conformity, will always be relevant, particularly as the world's population continues to grow.

    H.... -....

As a follow-up: I found the experiment's results to be viscerally sickening. To know that the majority of people, at the behest of an apparent authority figure, are willing to intentionally inflict pain on another person (via shock), even beyond the point at which the shocked person stops responding (and may be presumably unconscious), even when the person inflicting the pain (administering the shock) is in such extreme mental distress about doing so, does not speak well of humanity’s subconscious modus opernandi or of humanity’s potential future. Equally disturbing is the fact that, out of 40 subjects, some of the subjects (the ones instructed to administer the shocks) remained calm throughout the whole experiment, and showed only minimal stress when inflicting pain on another person.

  64. B.... ....

Miami Vice had the best Music

    B.... ....

ABSOLUTELY!!! I purchased the Miami Vice Soundtrack (on Cassette Tape) a few years ago. This must be my 3rd time seeing this episode .... can't get enough of Miami Vice!!!

  68. a.... A....

Love the entire album and just had to search for this particular track because I just had to. PG has that impact 😊

  69. P.... S....

    P.... D....

    Exactly !

    P.... D....

    Sounds also Radiohead-ish, no?

    P.... D....

Peter Gabriel is beyond that. He has too many sounds. U cant identity one of his songs until he starts singing.
Check out his catalog and u will see this.

  72. C.... G....

    I LOVE Peter Gabriel,scince 1987

  73. M.... A....

I love every single note of this masterpiece...

  74. T.... G....

I'll make a video of violence and hope with this song. It's not only about the experiments of Milgram, but also a song of all our desastres, and the impossibility to solve them.

  75. s.... ....

A Fantastic tune that was so underrated.

  76. R.... R....

Who came here from the chocolate war

  77. w.... ....

    S.... A....

    Americans is where it's at

    S.... A....

No... Just THE best ever... 2019 and still

  88. P.... ....

"Funny", the only crappy songs in this album, 'Sledgehammer' and "Red Rain' were/still are most popular... :(
Oh no, there was another one, 'Big Time'! Meaning? Half of the thing was crap, the other... to me, a beauty :)

    P.... ....

+PrZemek44 I'll agree that Bigtime was a bit of an annoying one, but Sledgehammer, crap?? I personally think it was a pop gem... really inventive arrangements and so danceable.

    P.... ....

+PrZemek44 Ugh, Red Rain was great. Sledgehammer and Big Time don't belong on the album, both are naff. The rest of the album, including Red Rain was just brilliant. One of the best albums of all time.

    P.... ....

+no no Never mind the naysayers. Merry late Christmas!

    P.... ....

    +PrZemek44
What the fuck is this shit? The whole album is great. You just don't understand because you're too busy sporting a pseudomasculine mustache, you turd. Besides, "In Your Eyes" is more popular than "Red Rain."

PETER GABRIEL IS AWESOME (AGAIN), SO, IS A TOP 50 ALBUM ALL TIME!! AS WELL, the dj

  91. M.... B....

    Some of us resist
    Good song nonetheless.

    M.... B....

+Martyn Brewer This song references the infamous Milgram's obedience to authority experiment which attempted to explain, in part, the actions of many of the Nazis in the Holocaust.

    M.... B....

Thanks but I already knew that.

    M.... B....

    One doubt.

  92. J.... S....

First head this on Miami VIce.  That show had the best music. and it was a really good show.

    J.... S....

Me too! I still can't believe the ending.
I purchased the Miami Vice Soundtrack (on Cassette Tape) a few years ago. This must be my 3rd time seeing this episode .... can't get enough of Miami Vice!!!

    J.... S....

Exactly... I was a lil kid when I heard this on Miami Vice. Cracks me up to hear ppl talk about the "Americans brought them here" 🤣. Cool, glad your finally getting some culture and good music

  93. B.... N....

    Da Mafia 6ix

  94. f.... ....

to Tim Munsey: That mistake Crockett made would return to haunt him 2 years later when Crockett and Tubbs accidentally kill Hackman's wife, and out of revenge, he inadvertently tried to kill Crockett (but instead killed Caitlin Davies, who was a few weeks pregnant with Crockett's baby).

    f.... ....

Woe...I must see that episode again!!!

    f.... ....

    figment1988 great memory

  95. m.... ....

PG is a leftie multi-culturalist / cultural-Marxist so he is, wittingly or unwittingly, promoting NWO's agenda

Hitler, the man most vilified & attacked by your mainstream media & a large part of the alternative media, Alex Jones included, was the biggest threat to it:
