Gabriel, Peter - Waiting For The Big One Lyrics

The wine's all drunk and so am I
Here with the hoi-poloi, don't ask me why
We're celebratin' anticipatin'; end of the year
everybody come, everybody here
- well more or less
Some already in a mess
I guess they're waiting for the big one.

Wonder why I'm cold. How did I get this far?
Had no money, had no car
I pray the snow goes, be bad if it settles
'cos I follow my nose and the dried up rose petals
- like the man says,
Sure hope Moses knows his roses
Or we'll all be waiting for the big one.

Once I was the credit to my credit card
spent what I hadn't got, (it) wasn't hard
No trust in judgement no trust in money
Someday I'll find myself like a bee finding honey
But in the meantime
I'm gonna have me some fun
Waiting for the big one.

One too many, where ego I go too
Looking for the real thing
It don't come from what I do
No real communication moves out of my face
I'm beginning to think I'm just out of place
Won't get in too deep, I want to get some sleep
To be ready for the big one
To be ready for the big one

Even a blues track GREAT ALBUM

  6. D.... S....

I remember him doing this at Hammersmith in early 80s. He'd disappear off stage and all of a sudden be sitting in the circle singing. Must o kept him fit.

  7. J.... T....

Great album and great album cover.

Why do I see a curvy female taking her cloths off listening to this?

I am waiting for the big one!!

  12. l.... i....

    Peter and steve

    l.... i....

... sadly the rest of his albums differ too much from this gem ... Bob Ezrin´s production defenitely left a print ...

  13. G.... W....

I love this song so much.

  14. D.... L....

The ending isn't on my CD. Weird.

    D.... L....

... WIERD ... because the last three songs match seemless into each other ... very pioneering
i always thought about this entire album ....

  15. K.... C....

The best Peter Gabriel album ever

    K.... C....

... sadly the rest of his albums differ too much from this gem ... Bob Ezrin´s production defenitely left a print ...

  16. J.... R....

Good God this is such a great fucking song------not to mention the ENTIRE ALBUM being just insanely GOOD...... Such a wall of bristling sound, emotion, and colorful melody........ I still have yet to explore MUCH of Peter's musical backlog.....

    J.... R....

... sadly the rest of his albums differ too much from this gem ... Bob Ezrin´s production defenitely left a print ...

  17. J.... G....

I Thought Fripp was on guitar saw it twice

    J.... G....

What's a guitar saw? Like a Page thing?

    J.... G....

Fripp was on lead guitar, on the album and live. You saw what you saw, as did I. Others would have you not believe your lying eyes.

  18. w.... ....

    Very Randy Newmanesque. Love it.

    w.... ....

had to make sure it was really Peter Gabriel singing :)

  19. c.... ....

Bob Ezrin produced his best here... Then he did that overblown overrated atrocity known as The Wall...

    c.... ....

... but before joined to release Lou Reed´s masterpiece BERLIN (1973) ....

  20. J.... C....

    B Luc, je suis d'accord.

  21. v.... b....

Il y a les artistes et il y a les autres....

  22. z.... ....

    Happy 40th anniversary!

  23. D.... U....

When people tell me Robert Fripp can't play blues, I let them hear this track.

    D.... U....

Steve Hunter is doing the solo work; Fripp is doing rhythm.

    D.... U....

    Fripp can't play Blues.

    D.... U....

Gabriel's 'Live in Cleveland' version of this track proves you both wrong.

    D.... U....

Fripp only shows on the last track. The rest is Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner

  24. J.... C....

What a fantastic track this is!

  25. D.... F....

Incredible artist a good study for any B. F. A.

    D.... F....

I have no money I have no Car..... I can't smell these roses

  26. F.... G....

What?? ------ there's no blues in prog rock!

    F.... G....

I'm guessing that you have never heard of Pink Floyd then?

    F.... G....

PF songs certainly possess a blues "sound" and rhythm, but their songs are never really in the boring three-chord structure.  I like blues sound, but I'm a terrible audience with bands that have songs with Every song being A-D-E, or G-C-D, whatever --- you see this in American bands and after three songs in a bar with just three chords, I can't take it anymore. Please -- when I see the Allman s play In Memory of Elizabeth Reed instead of  Statesboro Blues === yawn.

    F.... G....

    What about Seamus from Meddle?

    F.... G....

Thank god i just enjoy music

  27. L.... B....

    His best solo album.

    L.... B....

... sadly the rest of his albums differ too much from this gem ... Bob Ezrin´s production defenitely left a print ...

    L.... B....

@Esteban Posada Duque hita Esteban Posada Duque, i think this whole album is superb, hope ya doing well

    L.... B....

  28. C.... G....

I love the sense of humour that Peter poured into his music. Home sweet home comes to mind, sad and a dark humour at the same time. In his Genesis days, Get em out by Friday was hilarious.

    C.... G....

    Selling England by the Pound

  29. n.... c....

    great piano

  30. D.... N....

"Once I was a credit to my Credit Card..."

  31. M.... ....

The wines all drunk and so am I lol :)

  32. M.... D....

you hit the nail on the head,Philip. You put my thoughts into words

  33. P.... S....

it has to be the ultimate R`n`B song ever written,, pure blues,, clapton, each your heart out

  34. l.... ....

    Unbeliveable voices!

  35. p.... ....

Steve Hunter's guitar parts on this one is simply timeless and superb

    p.... ....

I had no idea it was Steve Hunter! Then again, when I discovered Aerosmith as a teenager in the 80s, I had no idea that was Hunter on Train Kept a-Rollin' and not Joe Perry.

  36. D.... L....

Never heard this before. I don't recognize the photo. Neato.

  37. M.... S....

    Still enjoy listening to this!

  38. l.... ....

quand la bêtise est au delà de tout!!! c donc du son pour les européens! Mais dans quel monde vous vivez!! I cry for your minimal spiritual without music

  39. l.... ....

no comment genre...... c bon .barre

  40. M.... m....

    excellent.

  41. T.... ....

Holiday's gone, world gone mad-wind whips down the Manhattan canyons of skyscrapers, East & Hudson Rivers chilled  breezes marry & swirl as the winds howl & mock me as I walk down Broadway with my overcoat collar up and my red fleshed cheeks enhance my humdrum & sadness-waiting for the Big One......

  42. L.... L....

muy buen tema... en realidad, fantastico

  43. o.... ....

Dick Wagner and/or Steve Hunter, two fine guitarists who happened to be one of producer Bob Ezrin's happiest choices: check also out their great work on Lou Reed's "Berlin"

  44. r.... ....

I don't care what his expression was, since by this point, PG was on his way to continuing musical development, while Genesis had become a money-making enterprise.

  45. r.... ....

Robert Fripp - Check out his solo stuff. Exposure has the most beautiful version of Here Comes the Flood. He also played with King Crimson

  46. r.... ....

"the wine's all drunk, and so am I"

    r.... ....

    woe woe woe

  47. G.... U....

    @billstutherland: Robert Fripp is credited on the album, as Steve Hunter;

  48. b.... ....

Does anyone know who plays lead guitar on this track?

    b.... ....

Steve Hunter – acoustic guitar on "Solsbury Hill"; lead guitar on "Slowburn" and "Waiting for the Big One"; electric guitar, rhythm guitar; pedal steel

    b.... ....

Without question, Hunter. More info at: http://www.stevehunter.com/car.html

  49. s.... ....

Saw him sing this live at the Roxy in L.A. back when the album came out - he wasn't on stage but when the song started a spotlight picked him out sitting in someone's lap in the balcony.

  50. M.... ....

    the bbbblues !!! bellissima

  51. D.... V....

I remember Gabriel also referred to Mose Alison for this song in interviews.

  52. l.... w....

@SolsburyPhil i had a good laugh at your name, in a good way that is, nicely done

  53. j.... ....

Newman laughs at it too. He's not some sort of blind American patriot. But just observing and speaking of his homeland makes him a total American jerk, right? Gimme a break.

  54. j.... ....

Waits should've covered this back in his jazz days. It's more suited to him. He could've knocked it out of the park! As it is, it's a sweet track mixing cocktail jazz, Ray Charles styled vocals, blues and hard rock.

  55. P.... H....

I don't really see the connection with 'traditional European music"; I always viewed this as essentially a blues song, with a little
    Could you elaborate, ronpaul2008?
I'd be really interested in hearing anything you think this was influenced by.
    Thanks

  56. r.... ....

You're right. This song is steeped in traditional European music.

  57. t.... s....

noooo as an American Randy Newman stole something and wrapped the stars and stipes around it as usual .... YAWN .. Viva Europa .. where life goes on and we laugh at McDoalds culture .... yeh go live it sucker !
