Gabriel, Peter - Philadelphia Lyrics

Philadelphia

Sometimes I think that I know what love's all about
And when I see the light, I know I'll be all right

I've got my friends in the world, I had my friends
When we were boys and girls and the secrets came unfurled

City of brotherly love, place I call home
Don't turn your back on me, I don't want to be alone
Love lasts forever

Someone is talking to me, calling my name
Tell me I'm not to blame, I won't be ashamed of love
Philadelphia

City of brotherly love, brotherly love

Sometimes I think that I know what love's all about
And when I see the light, I know I'll be all right
Philadelphia

A beautiful cover. Gabriel truly nails his own version.

I like his small lyric changes, and his voice & interpretation, along with the instrumental choices. They serve to create both an ode to Young's masterpiece, while respectfully adjusting its frequency for a new hearing.

It was brave, and loving, of Gabriel to create this cover, as most anyone bears a hands-off sentiment when it comes to Young's definitive creation & performance of it, and in a film that's equally eternal, and both quintessential milestones of Western Culture (and a little beyond...).

It's also deeply personal, for nearly everyone.

Hearing this version gives rise to a slightly different confluence of emotions, images, thoughts...etc. Still annihilates me, yet with a slight twist of its own.

The only thing wrong with the original was that Neil sang it. Thanks Peter!

    Very Nice <3

Peter Gabriel is a very talented artist but he should've left this one alone. Neil Young perfected it...

I gotta agree... Also if you do a video for a song called Philadelphia, about Philadelphia, you kinda have to shoot it in Philadelphia for full effect. Could do some real poignant stuff with shots of "love" park... And just sad shots in Philly with a small budget and a camera if someone were so inclined. But I don't expect the person who made this video to fly all the way from France for that lol.

NY has his merits BUT! He‘s not in the same league as PG.
NY will always rendition his own songs with a heart and intensity unparalleled by most. But he really isn‘t a "singer of tonal ability“

This version showcases what a class songwriter he is with an equally heartfelt performance from a superior singer and equally merited "interpreter".
