Funkadelic - Music For My Mother Lyrics
Man
I was in a place
Called Keeprunnin', Mississippi one time
And I heard someone on my way by
Sounded a little something like raw funk to me
And this is all I could hear, baby
Whoa-hah-hey
Whoa-hah-ha
Whoa-hah-hey
Whoa-hah-ha
Whoa-hah-hey
Whoa-hah-ha
Whoa-hah-hey
Whoa-hah-ha
Whoa-hah-ha
It got so good to me, man
That I stopped runnin'
My feets was tired anyhow
So I reached in my inside pocket
And got my harp out
Sit down by old beat-up railroad train
And get me get myself
A little of that old funky thang
Yeah!
Yeah, I'm?
Yeah, whoa!
Yeah
Mm-m-hmmm
Yeah
Can you all feel what I mean?
This is what you call
Way-back yonder funk
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Whoa ha hey
Whoa ha ha
Say it loud!
I'm funky and I'm proud!
I'm aging!
Old funk

The raw funk in "Keep runnin Mississippi" makes me think he was talking about men on the chain gang working and singing in the hot sun.
superb !
Far Out! Deep Fried Funkadelic.Toney Toney Isaiah.

straightup blues -- proto funk
Herb Sparkman on vocals, Eddie in guitar, billy on bass, brad Ennis on drums tiki quit that's why he's not on this song herb, eddie , billy, and brad quit after this tune George just wont pay but Eddie came back then billy who begged tiki to cone back
So he (Gorge Clinton [or whatever his name is]) wrote a song for his mom?
Could be Georges mom loved blues like muddy waters and James Elmore, so yeah when George discovered LSD and started listening to white rock and roll like the Beatles. Stones, and cream who was just playing blues so George decided to play his version of blues and rock music when he put funkadelic together
I always liked the Funkadelic songs with a heavy Eddie Hazel influence the best. To me their best album is Standing On the Verge Of Getting It On, where Eddie Hazel (co-)wrote most of the songs.
Eddie played on the entire standing on the verge album and he played on some on the up for the down stroke album he sang on down stroke p lays guitar on goose and whatever makes my baby feels good
True that! 👁
Maggot Brain was one of the greatest and least appreciated guitarists in the history of American music
It was also Eddie Hazel's nickname, thanks for revealing to everyone that you are both ignorant and backwards with your primtive word choice and poor information. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggot_Brain_%28song%29
+Vos van Eck notice how u are the only one in the comment section has anything negative to say here. u need to figure out what's wrong with u that u can't enjoy good music without putting others down, and doing so without the correct info.
no, worm brain jams down better
Gregory Kiefer man oh man, I have always loved me some Eddie Hazel. Super Stupid Just thunders!!
I remember this song. It was on their first lp. George Clinton had belonged to a group called The Parliments. They were all clean cut and wearing tuxedo's and stuff. Although this wasn't there main release, it was a strong b side cut. I think the a side was I bet you. It actually was the birth of Funk as we know it today.
+Mrclgreen actually, it was a release before the album as a 45. the B-side of I bet you. I had it in 1967 or 68. one of the first records I every had.

Art Marks you are a true FUNKADELIC you are one of the people that I can listen to when talking about the funk mob.
No its herb sparkman tge only song he dif with funkadelic
Funk is the only thing that transcends time and space
+Zach K I like the way you think #LightYearGrooving! Know doubt...
+Zach K You've got that backwards. Time and space transcend funk. As George Clinton personally put it ""funk is the universe"
As George Clinton personally put it (on french tv ) : FUNK IS ITS OWN FOOD
And is own reward !
IS THAT EDDIE HAZEL TALKING ON THIS SONG?
+lloyd johnson No, it's actually Herb Sparkman. Eddie is on guitar here.
@ocularisabyssus Thank you for the information.

They had a unique blend; funk, rock and soul! Truly way ahead of their time. I got into their music in 69'. George Clinton and company really thrived on blowing your mind!
Charles Woods free your mind and your ass while follow. Never was there a true phrase spoken

keep running mississippi... you young ones, and myself, have NO IDEA! thanx for posting this, been looking. didn't even know the title but knew about keep running mississippi. imagine the fear, danger, just so some of you "entitled" could be entitled... music and laughter, two of the most important qualities in life which lead to love. you will know what you know, when you know it...
Way back yonder funk, yeah!
This grouped invented a new standard man!
If I had to pick one single funkiest song of all time, this would be the one.
michigan...once again as the forefront...
I think Funkadelic was against the war, against violence and killing... At least that's what I feel in their music... Love. But whatever. I wouldn't be proud if I were you.
Wow! that's awesome how well you knew him. I always knew that their influences were blues artists, I think that is what they refer to by the "Good Old Funky Music" or "Music that was good to my mother." For Funkadelic, they were just continuing the traditions of the past. Unlike a lot of modern pop artists who repeat what's already been done because they are not aware of it.
reminds me of walking down the railroad tracks in south florida. came upon a hobo camp. played music and got drunk with them. fell asleep by a big ole fire listening to the trains go by as we all got loaded in the woods together.
eddie hazel <3
I had the pleasure to hang out and jam with Billy Bass Nelson on several occasions. One time I was at his place chillin' with a few other people and he pulled out a tape of Robert Johnson and put it on. I was real suprised! We wound up all having a conversation about the old time blues guys and how they influenced all the R&B, Funk and even Rock. These guys knew about their roots, something that is nearly forgotten today.
I love Funkadelic, the groove in their songs are deeply incredible!
Thank you, Momma Clinton :)
