Funearl ` ffaf are good but it amazes me on how every vid of this kind of band people say it is the best band ever.
i can't even limit my favorite bands to a mere dozen so saying theres one better than all the others blows my mind every time

curious, what kind of black metal? Its not even a genre I like particularly but I listened to extremely solid black metal albums, and clearly some were above what I heard from funeral for a friend it terms of both energy and emotion. That said I think the extremeness makes things more intense with bands like Harakiri for the Sky or Mgla.
My guess is that you have personal attachment to this band in particular, because of some life experience or very specific thing. I mean they don't transcend anything technically, they're a very good post hardcore band and mix their influences efficiently, but nothing revolutionary?
Well I guess theses days doing something completely new is quite hard, even among my favorites, not all are particularly original, sometimes it's not about originality

hmm non of these are purely death metal and black metal but yeah relatively closely related...(symphonic black for dimmu, melodic death for soilwork, the difference is actually quite big for these bands in particular, but I kinda saw this coming. Death melodic also has bands like Hypocrisy which is closer to actual death metal, it's varied and I love this subgenre because of it.
Deathstars is industrial, very good tho, particularly fun to listen to.

I still love this song and album, it was very different from stuff before but I thought it was a nice change of pace to make an album with a very "big" feeling. They have more recently gone back to their beginning style so I'm okay with one album like this. It shows diversity :)
