Frusciante, John - Smile From The Streets You Hold Lyrics

[SECTION I]

It's been so long
Since I've felt the heat of the sun on my paw,
You're the one who knows me best
Cuz you think that your flirt intends
You're a smile from the streets
You hold my heart in my hands while I'm beat.
Oh, you're always on the decline
You take another sip of wine -
A toast to us.
You're the one with the stars.
You help the sand for the one that you are
That you... that you...

[SECTION II]

You're the one in the sky,
Where'd you go?
You know you're where the planets grow
You're in the sun .....

People who praise this album aren't fans, they're sycophants.

  4. B.... M....

What a fucking mess. Stay off drugs kids.

  5. b.... _....

eu amo esse album mais que minha própria vida

  6. J.... C....

    Sos puro amor

  7. S.... K....

I'm sorry ,I like pretty off the wall crazy music , but this is fucking terrible....pitiful actually

  8. B.... D....

If your into John's melodic and melancholic jams please check a Jam I had with a mate and let me know what you think https://youtu.be/0rDgLNA0CFQ

  9. B.... C....

    Not pop. 😉

  10. H.... B....

Broke as fuck and just got kicked out of my apartment, and this music is starting to speak to me.

  11. J.... P....

    Painfully honest album.

  12. S.... U....

Falling into the abyss never sounded so cool.

Its kind of interesting how this is one of the first videos you find when you search john frusciante in 2019 December. This was and is a pretty obscure album. Niandra was his album of this period that usually gets more attention. John even took this off the market way back when. Maybe its been redistributed since? This album is a bunch of random recordings he had. Some from around the time it came out and even one from when he was 17. I remember reading something about him not liking this album much as he legit put it out for some extra cash. I used to love this when i was a teenager. Nothing sounds like the feeling of wanting to disappear like this did for me then. Listening to it now i still think moments resonate but it truely is a punk record. Its hilarious thinking of rhcp fans who may have grown up on stadium arcadium or something sitting down and listening to this. I hope it clicks with some kids and they check out things like can, germs, ariel pink, captain beefheart, lounge lizards etc. John and flea did that for me.

  16. J.... ....

It's actually a fk good album

  17. G.... T....

    No sabia de este album

  18. D.... C....

John... you said the n word, come on!!! 😡

  19. C.... M....

This is a great album, but I think Im the only one who connects more with niandra than this one. But, both are great, it's just a personal preference.

  20. B.... C....

THIS ONE IS FOR YOU FRUSCIANTE !!!!!!

Thank you for every bit of music you putted out there and for everything you put into it!

just got this on CD, it's both outstandingly beautiful and fascinating beyond words. I really recommend listening to it on CD, as it is even rougher around the edges and has a raw and more intense vibe to it in my opinion. still struggle to listen to I May Again Know John, it brings me to tears every time, just an immensely powerful song. Love you John.

  23. S.... M....

What is wrong with you all? I love RHCP and John Frusciante is a great guitarist and he can do pretty good backing vocals - in the studio - i.e. whats on By The Way. This however is a good example of what happens when you try to play music when you are off your face, or recovering from being off your face. All the comments about it being a great album made by pain and addiction to heroin (just picked up the words on the top comment, but many are similar) are bullshit. I've played maybe 800-1000 gigs over the last 35 years, and the ones when I am off my face sound like this - badly played and badly sung - or just plain bad. I would bet my house that if JF was asked about this album when hes clean he would say ' I recorded it when I was a mess, its shit'

    S.... M....

Obviously if someone were to pick this up and not know anything about John Frusciante or the state of mind he was in while making this, most of it would sound like something got stuck in the garbage disposal. But knowing that this is self expression in its truest form, in a time where making this was probably the only way he could express himself, makes it great. Context can make anything beautiful. Even a garbage disposal. It helps when you’re out of it and need something to relate to.

    S.... M....

I wouldn't hear this album without its "badly played" parts. Feels great. There are tons of musicians who work on perfecting and editing everything so fucking much, that maybe having this gem to get out of all that shit for a bit might be nice

  24. J.... ....

I hate the glorification of agony and addiction here in the comments.
Yes, there are some cool moments on this records (Fall thru the ground, e.g.).
But besides these sketches, it's completely incoherent, unmusical, uninteresting - could be done by a thousand other people -
maybe some of the odd chord changes stem from addiction and not prog-genius.

... coming from a huge Frusciante-fan, with or without the peppers.

    J.... ....

True. I think those traits incapsulate being that far down which a lot of people relate to. It is how it was; an unfiltered expression of incoherence, squaller, disinterest that doesn't try to be anything else. Definitely no masterpiece, in fact it couldn't be further from one, which for me makes it a compelling statement, one which on occasion, has a genuinely "new" idea, which in itself is rare in the human experience.. probably a bit of a tangent, hope you don't mind! :)

    J.... ....

many people in these comments are romanticizing drug abuse and self destruction and its disgusting tbh

    J.... ....

    JuiCeBoX19
I completely get your point although I do not necessarily agree with it. Personally I really enjoy this album and Niandra LaDes because they are departures from everything I’ve heard before. I listen to quite a lot of music and since I’m not even in my 20s yet I never had this mind blowing moment of listening to those ”big“ classics for this first time (pet sounds, sgt peppers, Dark side of the Moon...). They were always around somehow and although I’m enjoying them I can’t fully appreciate them for the revelation they were at the time. This is why I’m enjoying this album so much. For the first time I feel like I’ve heard something so fresh and raw sounding that it changed my perspective on what music could be (similar to the madcap laughs and montage of heck, but Frusciante exceeds them).
I know this album has its flaws, sounds awful at times and is definitely not as sophisticated as many other albums but this is all part of the reason why I love it so much

    J.... ....

@Trafalger D. Water Law Well said.

  25. A.... S....

THIS IS AWESOMELY REFRESHING OUTSIDE THE BOX

  26. S.... B....

i always come back to this

  27. w.... ....

    What a load of shit.

  28. N.... M....

Enter a Uh has got to be one of the most bizarre songs ever recorded.

  29. D.... ....

does anybody know why this album isnt on spotify?

    D.... ....

It was removed from all stores together with the album „Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt“ after he re-joined the peppers in 1998. „Niandra...“ was re-released a few years later, this one wasn‘t, even though he said it‘s gonna be one day.

    D.... ....

@Fan of Edm well i hope it will :D but thanks! :)

  30. C.... G....

    What's the cover art about?

    C.... G....

    It's one of John's paintings

  31. b.... ....

Prob still real over river . I am . Sumtimes

  32. W.... ....

the tascam overdrive is strong w/this one

  33. J.... Y....

What's the story on the album cover?

    J.... Y....

May be It could be one of Frusciante's paintings, in that time of his life he usually would paint a lot of this weird looking things. Very surreal

  34. M.... R....

it’s always the rawness that inspires me most , When things get too refined that’s when It’s over

  35. j.... i....

proof that if on the right side of fame, you can shit and throw it at your audience and it will be forgiven....like GG allin, truly chosen and nothing less..

  36. G.... P....

5:31 onward reminds me of the intro to Slane Castle

  37. L.... Z....

He's snorting cocaine or heroin in the 1st minute of the first track :/ :( glad he's doing fine now 🤗😍 Also, what's that sound at 4:30?

    L.... Z....

Leni Zenith he’s taking a hit from a bong, not snorting a line

    L.... Z....

@Nick Hensby nope. I'm talking about the first minute of the first track of the album. What you talk about it's in another song in the same album

    L.... Z....

Leni Zenith yeah your right, I think it’s “for air” where he takes the bong hit?

    L.... Z....

@Nick Hensby exactly 😉 and a very nice song actually. Pity he doesn't remember the songs anymore and possibly never plays them for friends or alone or whatever

  38. D.... 9....

    Buen álbum

  39. A.... M....

Oh, God! How I wish they re-release this album as an entirely instrumental one! I would really buy it!
The hardest part of hearing this album is his vocals. I know he was deeply in trouble, this is a raw truth.

  40. E.... P....

Me parece una barbaridad, simplemente único...

  41. C.... K....

I can hear this in my head when I am getting yelled at. the world around me goes mute and this comes on.

  42. M.... P....

Me sorprende la cantidad de sordos que defienden esta porquería que acabo de escuchar.
    Los argumentos son fantásticos.

Debe ser que todos los groupies de Frusciante se drogan. Mucho.
    Aflojen!!!

  43. J.... B....

    Pure effing garbage

  44. T.... M....

    Absolutely Beautiful

  45. L.... A....

    L.... A....

Es un album interesate por muchos motivos. Es musica cruda y ruda emanada desde las entrañas de la bestia que es la adicción

  46. M.... E....

Hello depression again, come on in please, I have this beautiful piece to play, i remember it's your favorite. Remember ? Like the old times

    M.... E....

That truth made my mind cry.

  59. B.... K....

Does anybody have the tabs for the first song?? And maybe the two songs he played in the documentary

  60. S.... F....

    Fucking hilarious

  61. K.... ....

John is my favorite artist and it fucking hurts to listen to him...

  62. L.... M....

People think this album sucks, only if they've never been down and out.

  63. m.... s....

    Is a f... genius

  64. J.... F....

    OYY-EEEEEE OYY-EEEEE OYY-EEEEE

  65. J.... P....

I don't think he's happy with this album, but I don't give a shit. I think it's one of the greatest art pieces out there. Imagine any other great artist through time that had a record of their art when they were at their peak of insanity. We'd kill to see it, or hear it. I'm glad we can hear this. I think his first 3 albums are 3 of the greatest albums ever made. I really like his others but these speak to my soul. And I have a hurt, fucked up soul.

    J.... P....

Jay Privacy apart from acknowledging it was released for drug money, John has never commented on the album again publicly. I’d imagine it was pulled from the shelves in ‘98 due to him rejoining the Chili’s and him not wanting this in the same domain when he was clean a sober

  66. a.... ....

    It is crazy...
but,why this music attract my hearts?

  67. S.... H....

I’m embarrassed that people try and be edgy and say this record is good, hipsters are the absolute fucking worst, Frusciante even hates this record and hasn’t made it available to buy for some time, no one thinks you’re cool because you like something everyone else thinks is a pile of shit, it just makes you look stupid

    S.... H....

Stone Harper elements of genius throughout this, no denying it

  68. S.... G....

    crianças, nao usem drogas

  69. J.... A....

  70. L.... A....

Enter a uh starts so epic

  71. p.... ....

I saw him play live for this LP in 97 in NYC. It was a dream to see my hero in the flesh. He sang the title song and jammed on it for like 15m. insane. he was still on shit during that tour though. It would be about 1 yr later that i saw him play again live for a secret RHCP show in NYC once again. This time in a much different shape from the 97 solo Nuttstalk tour.

    p.... ....

    Lucky man

  72. J.... H....

This album means so much to everyone here and its so obvious, bless all of you and you can make it through the pain you're going through. Whether it's addiction, heartbreak, loss of life, or just anything life throws at you, you will make it. You just have to hold a smile when you walk down the street and remember life fucks everyone at some point, its just your turn right now.

  73. g.... ....

I see a bottle of coke on the cover art.

  74. W.... 1....

Whenever I hit a low point, I listen to this album. It must've been 2 years since I've heard anything from Smile From The Streets You Hold.

    W.... 1....

Hey you are in every video i go 😂 mostly on megadeth videos lol

  75. J.... ....

Smile from the streets you hold , the song itself <3

  76. D.... H....

Poppy man is so complex and layered I love it. It almost sounds like he’s using microtones.

  77. D.... H....

The 2nd album on pitchfork to ever receive a 0

    D.... H....

Damon Humble foreal that’s like way better than getting a 10

    D.... H....

    fuck pitchfork

  78. A.... C....

The ability to come back from this state of mind and this
sort of life is not terribly common and pretty remarkable in and of itself.

Looking at this album as a snapshot of where he was in comparison to later
works tells quite the story. Even if this album isn’t your thing sonically, it
still serves a purpose as part of an illustration of redemption, reform, and
recovery. It is very human. Erratic and flawed and raw, indicative of
transition and flux and chaos, all of which live within each of us.

    A.... C....

Beautifully put. Exactly. It helps me through my deep valleys. God it helps like nothing else of this earth when I feel so alone...this album in particular always comforts somehow. Your comment should have a million likes, but I guess we are rare and special souls who get it really

    A.... C....

AC Curtis and the fact that he immediately came back and made californication is incredible

    A.... C....

this album has some of the best songs frusciante has ever made. easily more fun than Niandra and way better than anything he's been doing since the empyrean. they're recorded pathetically, but they're great compositions and can easily translate to higher fidelity. sure the rawness of the recording adds another dimension.

    A.... C....

His essence Has always been there you can hear it.. in the textures.. in the chords... the exploration of a different way of feeling the music... More spiritual and limitless and overall very very raw... But intelligent. I think this album reveals the sound of Jhon Frucciante, to develop into what we know today. Many Many albums. Respect. :))

    A.... C....

    well said

  79. I.... M....

thank you for uploading this, i am very grateful because i cant find it elsewhere/ copies are very expensive.

  81. C.... O....

i BEEN SEARCHING FOR THIS FRUISCIANTE SINCE TWENTY TWELVE I HEARD HIM FIRST SEARCHING IN A FIELD FOR A SINK A HOLE OF HEAVEN WITH my friend now he's dead and I searched and searched through all the later releases and on the whole emotional fugstones but this and the for clara album as so far have taken the proverbial biscuit. Thanks YT for being here

    C.... O....

Yeah. He's ashamed of these albums. That's why this isn't on Spotify, and why it took so long for usually just a tshirt to go to spotify. I get it, though, this isn't something I'd be proud of, either, but I wouldn't want to hide it. It's a reflection of who he was. Some people really need someone to tell them that they're not alone, and this was Frusciante's way of doing that.

  82. J.... C....

    The best álbum ever

  83. M.... 1....

Between niandra and smiles you can really hear John fall apart

  84. T.... ....

I dunno what's going on but that's might be the most wonderful thing i've ever heard, but on the otherhand I think this is distubing in some ways.

    Can't fucking describe that feeling.

John is such more than a virtuose!

  85. M.... B....

Oh ffs I just can't with people calling this art or music. You're as high as John was when he threw this dreck together

  86. M.... D....

They should make kids read Scar Tissue, listen to his two heroin albums and watch his documentary interview and Johnny Depp film about his home that burned down. Very scary.

  87. C.... J....

When did they record Height Down?

  88. M.... C....

I was listening to this album when I was on opioid withdrawl and I completely understood and felt his pain.

    M.... C....

I tried smoking opium in 1980 once and liked it so much never did it again, seemed like it could be addictive. Did same with cocaine in same year. Have an addictive personality and both just to sample alternate reality, but had bad feeling about both. Welcome back!

  89. S.... S....

Does anyone else feels TOM WAITS vibes

    S.... S....

    you're right

    S.... S....

and some of his stuff i'll bet the Radiohead guys listened to a lot.

  90. R.... R....

I'm Always is hands down one of the most beautiful songs John has ever written.

  91. H.... L....

For Air is actually quite easy to listen to. But with all their craziness and pain, every song on this album is beautiful

which tracks are the ones that feature river phoenix? apparently they were removed from N.L.A.U.J.A.T and put into this album later under different names...

    L.... L....

I'm pretty sure Height Down and Well I've Been featured River Phoenix...

  94. M.... P....

I wonder if he's ashamed or proud of this now

    M.... P....

Never re-released, must be painful memories.

    M.... P....

Ashamed since he released it only for drug money. I wish he'd re-release it though, so I could have it next to Niandra.

    M.... P....

most likely proud but not bothered to re-release
