I don't think the songs sound that strong on this album on the record, due to John's deepening self-destructive attitudes, however in latter years, there were great live performances of these songs. For instance, everyone who hasn't already should check out this song live at the Roxy, Frusciante's emotion is incredible.

John was in fact using heroin during the recording of this album but he wasn't an addict yet. I forget which song it was but i heard an interview where he says he shot up before recording the solo for the song

Seems to be more about heroin to me, with the mention of the gun and so fourth. Might be about none of these things, because it was most likely recorded before he started using, or at least became addicted.

Actually, it was recorded from '91-'93 and released in '94, so John was a heroin addict when it was released, but most of the songs, if not all of them, were recorded before he was on dope.
