Franklin, Aretha - The Masquerade Is Over Lyrics

Your eyes don’t shine like they used to shine
And the thrill is gone when your lips meet mine
I’m afraid the masquerade is over
And so is love, and so is love

Your kiss don’t mean what it used, what it used to mean
It once was inspired, now it’s just another routine
I’m so afraid the masquerade is over
And so is love, and so is love

I guess I’ll have to play Pagliacci and get myself a clown’s disguise
And then I’ll learn to laugh, laugh like Pagliacci, oh, with tears all in my eyes

Hey baby, your kiss don’t mean what it used, what it used to mean
It once was inspired, now it’s just an everytime routine
I’m so afraid the masquerade is over
And so is love, and so is love

I first heard Aretha sing when I was 3 yrs. old, and the song was “Rescue Me”.......I never stopped loving her voice, songs, & style!! She will be singing in my heart & memories always.....R.I.P. Aretha-the true Queen of Soul!

  4. surrepeight

one of my very favorites by this great singer. 5 albums from Spirit in the Dark, through Let Me In Your Life, simply blew me away. They were her fullingness' first finales. She hadn't left the hits behind yet - there were still many in her to come. But she had reached a pinnacle of her vocal purity and she was doing what she wanted to do. Just superb.

THE QUEEN IS AT HER PEAK (WELL...SHE ALWAYS.....) ESPECIALLY HERE ON A GREAT, GREAT SONG CLASSIC. SHE WAS TOUCHED BY THE SPIRIT. I FIND THAT THE MORE I LISTEN TO THE PRE EIGHTIES ARETHA. SHE'S NOT REALLY GONE.

  10. Eric L Thomas Sr

When I listen to Aretha on this song it reminds me that Aretha had such a sweet side of her singing. Too often people focus on her climax but you get all of this before that.

I had not heard this since back in the 1970s,until I heard it sunday afternoon on a jazz station here where I live.
And it still sounds as good to ME today, as it did back in the 1970s.

Homemade cassettes of songs copied from my records got me through the many hours I was working in my studio during the 3+ years I went to architecture graduate school back in the very early 1980's. I wore out the cassette that had this song on it. What a voice!
