Franklin, Aretha - Border Song (Holy Moses) Lyrics

Holy Moses, I have been removed
I have seen the spectre, he was been here too
Distant cousin from down the line
Brand of people who ain't my kind
Holy Moses, I have been removed

Holy Moses, I have been deceived
Now the wind has changed direction
I think I'll have to leave
Won't you please excuse my frankness
But it's not my cup of tea
Holy Moses, I have been deceived, yes, I have

I'm going back to the border
Where my affairs, my affairs ain't been abused
I can't take any more bad water
I've been poisoned from my head down to my shoes
Yes, I have

Holy Moses, I have been removed

Holy Moses, can we live in peace
Let us try to find a way to make all hatred cease
There's a man standing over there
What's his color do you care
Holy Moses, can we live in peace

Holy Moses, can we live in peace
Holy Moses, can we live in
I wonder can we live in peace

Wow this is awesome I have always loved the original but this is something else

  3. T.... L....

I just heard this on the radio at Starbucks and I just realized it was a cover and probably Aretha Franklin

  4. T.... G....

    UP""""RiZE I"N"I PARADIZIO """"SOULJAH.....

  5. M.... E....

I never really realized she had border song, now who was first to write It? Was it Bernie or Aretha? All I know is great vocalist in their own right

    M.... E....

Both Elton and Aretha are both amazing vocalist

  6. N.... l....

The movie "THE UPSIDE" got me perusing the queen's files all over again

  7. D.... M....

This is how far ahead Queen Aretha was from anyone else. She was the first to push an Elton John song into the US top 40...when Elton John himself was but a music industry rumor. How do ya like dem apples?

  8. J.... H....

This is a combo platter that couldn't miss. One of the best singers ever, performing a profound message song by one of best every song writers ever.

  9. R.... C....

Rose Short, Brought Me Here Sing It Aretha, Can't We All Just live In Peace?

  10. M.... J....

Rose short from the voice is the reason I came here! ❤️

    M.... J....

Me too Rose killed it I am praying she wins

    M.... J....

    Me too!!!!😆

  11. A.... P....

Never knew Aretha sang this until I went to see Elton John and he mentioned it. I had to look it up. Amazing!

    A.... P....

I had pretty much forgotten about Aretha's cover of this song until seeing Elton in Cleveland on Nov. 11, 2019. He told of what a thrill it was for he and Bernie to have the Queen of Soul sing their song and what a boost it was to their careers.

  12. A.... I....

I don't know if we're alone here or if it's a universe filled with other living, breathing, laughing, crying and communicating beings. Regardless, I could pick this woman's voice out of any crowd.

  13. W.... 1....

One of the greatest tragedies is that we didn’t get a duet between Elton and Aretha on this song.

    W.... 1....

Yes we did - - search for it here on YT. They did in 1993.

  14. L.... ....

Wonderful voice... Wonder what it would have sounded like if Elton had played the piano to her singing. But that would probably have made the universe implode

  15. t.... ....

In my Aretha with a live version from 11/17/70 (when he mentions Aretha recorded this) and a later duet. Thanks for uploading!

  16. A.... I....

    Surprised she never became famous.lol.

  17. C.... &....

SHE IS A GODDESS OF MUSIC 🥺

  18. J.... A....

    Great version of the song.

  19. C.... F....

    Are you listening Donald Trump?

  20. m.... ....

Give credit where it's due - Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics.

    m.... ....

Sure did, and the song was a homage to the US civil rights movement and intended as a gospel/soul anthem. right from the start.

    m.... ....

Bernie wrote most of the lyrics to Elton’s music, or rather Elton wrote all the music for Bernie’s lyrics

  21. D.... B....

Can't imagine what it must have felt like for Elton and Bernie to hear Aretha sing their song. This is the only Elton/Bernie song I know of in which Elton contributed significantly to the lyrics (he wrote the last verse).

  22. T.... G....

Aretha is my idol, and I love a great cover... but gotta say I prefer Elton’s

  23. G.... ....

That ending!!! tears in my eyes.

  24. J.... D....

Aretha singing Elton and Bernie's music. This is what life is about.

  25. t.... ....

    Elton John Baby

  26. L.... ....

I'd only ever heard Aretha sing this but I just saw Rocket Man and realised it was an Elton John song, both versions are gold

    L.... ....

Jerri Keele He did a great job, but Elton’s are hard shoes to fill, impossible to fill really. But Elton has always made sure that younger performers and musicians got opportunities, so he cannot be faulted for that. I guess it’s a penance for his spendthrift ways.

    L.... ....

@acbulgin2 Oh okay. Have you read his book? It's amazing.

    L.... ....

Taylor Lange Whose? The Rocket Boy’s, or Elton’s? I guess you mean Elton’s. No, I haven’t, but I’m sure it’s fascinating. My thinking is that if you want to understand an artist, you do it by appreciating his art, in Elton’s case, by listening to his music. In this way you find your way to the heart of the man. In my experience, interviews and biographies don’t do much to increase my appreciation of an artist, their private lives and struggles are little different from those of ordinary people, except that they are exacerbated by the tremendous pressure of a major career.
But what interests me most about artists is their art. That’s where the real magic is.
If Elton were to talk in detail about how he writes songs, I might be more interested, but really even that can only enlighten one so much. It boils down to the fact that some people possess a rare gift for melodic invention, word-setting and song composition, and past a certain point, it just cannot be analyzed, and that’s why it’s magic, real magic, because unlike what a magician does, there’s no “trick” to it that can be taught. It’s truly creating something from nothing, and it defies intuition and the laws of nature.

    L.... ....

@acbulgin2 He kinda does talk about how he writes music. He can't write lyrics, but he can write music. That's why his relationship with Bernie Taupin worked so well. Bernie would write lyrics, and Elton would read them and music for it would form in his head. Yes, I was talking about Elton John's Autobiography called Me. He does talk a fair bit about his unhappiness and drug addiction.

    L.... ....

Taylor Lange Yeah, but how does it happen? James Taylor once said something like the following: “Songwriting for me is very much like listening to music, only I happen to be the first person to hear the song.”
Obviously, with people like that, there’s something going on in their brains that is very unusual. I think they often unconsciously take music they’ve heard somewhere else and rearrange it, and sometimes the rearranging goes on while they’re listening to someone else’s music. Prince said that’s how it was for him. “I hear music differently” he said.
There’s only 12 notes (or pitches) in music, and most composers or songwriters restrict themselves to 7 notes at a time, but it’s interesting to see the variety of things that different people do with them.

  27. G.... G....

The movie The Upside brought me here. I have never heard this one by Aretha but she never disappoints. RIP Queen.

  28. G.... G....

The upside brought me here. I have never heard this one by Aretha but she never disappoints. RIP Queen.

  29. Y.... H....

"The Upside" movie brought me here! R.I.P to the Q.O.S.!! :(

    Y.... H....

Me too! So glad. Love this song.

  30. t.... ....

I didn't know she did this until I saw it on here tonight. Why am I not surprised she nails this cover? Cause she is Aretha Franklin. Its an awesome version of an amazing song. Blow them away in heaven Miss Aretha.

  31. R.... H....

    Super!!

  32. C.... F....

A song that was written and another steal by Aretha❤️

    C.... F....

    Not sure what you mean

  33. S.... J....

I have been discovering so many songs that Aretha did lately and glad to. What an amazing catalogue of music.

  34. P.... A....

Omg! .. I love her version of Sir Elton Johns song . God I miss the perfection of this angels voice .. Rip I can’t stop crying 😢😇🙏🏻

    P.... A....

Aretha wrote the song and Elton John performs it also. I just recently found out.

    P.... A....

Thank you Jim Sutton oh this even makes so much more proud of her... what a treasure we had all these years .. and it’s so fitting she would write it with her gospel and religious back ground .. I always questioned why Elton would write that song .. thank you again .. 🤗🤗

    P.... A....

Pamela A Mankowski; what Jim Sutton said is false and clearly false. Indeed it is Elton John and Bernie Taupin who wrote "song of the border" and not Aretha.

    P.... A....

@Jim Sutton the song was written by Bernie Taupin (Elton's long time songwriter collaborator) and Elton wrote the last lines of the song. Aretha covered it. They changed the title to Border Son(Holy Moses), but the song was originally written by them and was originally called border song with holy moses in parentheses. Anyway it is a great song. All 3 are extremely talented. But this was not written by the Queen of Soul. Even though she did write many songs.

    P.... A....

Brilliant and very moving take, and this should have been included live on "Amazing Grace", both the original album and the film.

  35. J.... S....

    Good stuff.

  36. A.... D....

Tied with "Gotta Find Me an Angel" for the most moving of all of Aretha's songs.

  37. M.... J....

This is an awesome version of a great song.

    M.... J....

Yes it is - and it hasn't aged at all. I played this many times while following news of the 2006 Israeli-Lebanese war: it felt so painfully relevant.

  38. K.... M....

    Learnt alot from you

  39. a.... c....

  40. R.... B....

This is one of my favorites! She put her foot all up in this song!!!

  42. M.... G....

She could take any so g and make it her own.. Thats an artist.

    A.... N....

  44. R.... A....

I love all of her cover versions of other people's songs - such an amazing talent. And her versions side by side can really show just how amazing a wide spectrum of variation the human experience can bring.
