Frank Turner - Mittens Lyrics
Wandering lonely through the snow streets of New York
I stumbled on a thrift store that sold postcards by the yard
I bought a mile and shipped them home so I could read
Ten thousand ten-word tragedies, the lives these strangers lead
To remind myself the things I need
Cause I once wrote you love songs
You never fell in love
We used to fit like mittens, but never like gloves
You left me feeling like
We'd never really been in love
Huddled home down in my place, in Holloway
I wondered if you even heard those songs I used to play
I wrote them as a gift for you and in return
So I could play more ignored love songs
I once wrote you love songs
You never fell in love
We used to fit like mittens, but never like gloves
And I once wrote you postcards
You never wrote back
You promised me you would and I'm still waiting for them
You left me feeling like
We'd never really been in love
Don't wanna fit like mittens
I wanna fit like gloves
Wanna fit like gloves
I once wrote you love songs
You never fell in love
We used to fit like mittens but never like gloves
Never like gloves

Rewatching this realising that this is his now wife. Guess they fit like a glove afterall!
Someone special just played me this and said I was their glove.
To all divorces....especially mine.
Is the woman in this video his fiancée?
I'm trying to find a specific song but I can't find it but just going through all of his songs is great
What a sad orgasm to my heart and ears! Masterpiece😍
Great. Let' you imagine and feel the size of the emotions. Been there, felt that. Not so great. A while ago now. About the time when the video came out, but it can still bring back the emotions. Thankyou Frank. Gonna go and buy the Frank Turner Songbook now That for sure will make me soar again
I love this song
Dont get me wrong, love this song but am I the only one who cringes at the mittens/gloves metaphor
Alex Swift I think it's beautiful honestly, it's hard to describe it honestly
Une Très Belle Chanson
Hamid From DZ
this song is a masterpiece
INDEED!
Cyprien.
Love this tune!
dat outfit doe
I may be way off but I think the Elvis symbolism is awesome. Frank is a rock star whether he likes it or not and has some parallels with the king. I imagine it could be hard to intimately connect with someone that doesn't really understand what it's like to be a celebrity. He may be the king to the world but he feels like he's fallen or a failure to this other person. Maybe I'm way off.
Verse 1]
Wandering lonely through the snow streets of New York
I stumbled on a thrift store that sold postcards by the yard
I bought a mile and shipped them home so I could read
Ten thousand ten-word tragedies, the lives these strangers lead
To remind myself the things I need
[Chorus 1]
Cause I once wrote you love songs
You never fell in love
We used to fit like mittens, but never like gloves
[Post-Chorus 1]
You left me feeling like
We'd never really been in love
[Verse 2]
Huddled home up in my place, in Holloway
I wondered if you ever heard those songs I used to play
I wrote the [?] gift for you and in return
You gave a pair of hand knit mittens to keep my fingers warm
So I could play more ignored love songs
[Chorus 2]
I once wrote you love songs
You never fell in love
We used to fit like mittens, but never like gloves
And I once wrote you postcards
You never wrote back
Promised me you would and I'm still waiting for them

Wanna fit like gloves
[Outro]

Love love love everything about
this, frank you are great!
is that the same girl from Gaslight's "here comes my man" ???? could be wrong here so easy on me...
loved this song through a good pair of headphones.. this album is great. the video is ummm... interesting
Elvis? I hate this clip.. you can make it more romance, Frank
Claret and Blue army!!!! Great song though. I live Frank Turner!!!!
very weakerthans sounding, which is obviously great
I was not expecting that
Frank has done it again!!!
Wow LOL why are you dressed like elvis and a woman slapped you in the face LoL
I was like "huh, Elvis?" but then her reaction to him being silly, in love, then the look on his face as he lay on the ground.... I get it. I've been there, not as Elvis, but I've been walked out on and had that look like "I was silly in love, now I'm lying here sad and alone"
Nevermind Mittens,hes had some shit-uns.
Cheesey helmet.
Frank's output is incredible, and everything he's ever done is of the same fantastic quality. Thank you for not making us wait five plus years for a great album like a lot of other musicians out there. Seriously, The Clash and The Ramones are two of the only bands to do the same. It's a huge deal.
sex panther!
I mean in the song, she did feel for him a little. She feels absolutely nothing here. Mittens suggests there was something, sometime, but now there's nothing.
Why do she bump him? Bitch.
edited and STILL incorrect grammar. Your comment fits like mittens.
fantastic song crappie!!!!! video love frank turner Xxxxxxx
I find this video beautiful.
I think this is the best song in this new album. What a great song!
Willian Barros Kochhann totally agree
really bad and bland.
You were always the glove- she was the mitten... I know the feeling all too well.
Jesus, man.. What is going on with your videos? The song is beautiful, and someone told you make the video like this.. Hope you've enjoed laying on the floor.
but the girl is pretty
hate this song
question, why is the lyric video private now?
This video made me appreciate Frank even more, didnt know that was possible
I laughed alot, because Frank you look ridiculous and amazing all at the same time and i love the dancing. Great video and when you see it all the way through, it makes sense with the song which is such a great song. Hope you had as much fun filming this as I had watching it. Apart from the end, that bit is sad.
This is just a shouted version of I saw mummy kissing Santa Claus
probably make tit of myself here or I'll show I get it. Anyone thats been stupidly in love with someone but its one sided knows you go through all sorts trying to be noticed more, only to be slapped down. Maybe not to the extent of dressing as Elvis but great symbolism. Fantastic song.
@Ben Morse Photography :-& cheers Ben. When you've been there and done it, it stands out. I'm guessing the haters have never been through it.... Jesus, I'm one sad twat!!! :-D
This was my exact thoughts on the video no matter how much you can do for someone you love sometimes they will never appreciate your efforts and never reciprocate your feelings.
@sophie Bramley It's the look on Frank's face at the end, all too familiar to me, the look that says "why the f*ck do I do this to myself?"
Absolutely love this song and yes I’ve been there, but in the end it was a learning experience and it’s a cherished memory of mine
yes, to all of this!
I know I'm late, but I just didn't know what to say, I find this song and the video very beautiful, keep up the good work Frank :)
When I saw you play this song live I cried. I had never cried at a concert before. This video is lovely. Especially the ignoredlovesongs link. I sent a post card. Keep being awesome, Frank and I'll continue to love your content. :)
Love this song ❤️ Also great video Frank! ❤️
I was sort of scratching my head when the video first began I was like "Oh, Elvis. Yeah he's made some references to him in other places, but what does that have to do with..." then the camera pans to the girl and it just clicked into place why Frank was doing this. Great job portraying something that everyone can relate to in a way that is uniquely you. I hope I can catch a live show one day. Going to be a bit hard to do that in Kansas, but I'll be on the lookout.
+Michael Gilbert Oh man. He was just in KC in December. One of the best performers I've ever seen!
+Shenanglers Marshall Cool! I'll probably see you at the next concert then.
+Trevor Stewart Yeah I live in KC...don't know why I didn't hear about this. I can catch a Gaslight Anthem concert but this one slipped by?
Yeah it flew under the radar a bit but i heard them talking about it on 96.5. It was for one of the nights the buzz stole xmas. He played all of his best songs. Fantastic show haha.
Definitely a must-see live act. My girl wasn't too into Frank when I played his albums, but was blown away at the concert. He is just such a showman and authentic musician and his passion shows.
My boyfriend's interpretation of the video: "Guys, we need a video, what do we have?" - "Elvis suit, creepy lighting, a club, and one extra." - "OK, he dances, walks creepily over, and then gets slapped, because everyone of us wants to see that" - "That's a minute, tops!" - "Errrm, slomo!" - "Brilliant!"
My interpretation: The slap is a metaphor for the emotional pain and disappointment deriving from unrequited or unequal love, leaving you lonely and hurt on the ground, however hard you try to make it work, if your personalities just don't fit... And maybe what you're into just seems creepy to the other person. :D
It's the hair, man!
I'd like to think the premise is that of a romantic comedy's climax " a man who is desperately trying to get back the love of his life after he cheated on her, got an idea from a movie to dress up as an elvis impersonator ( his girlfriend's favorite artist)and put on a show for her. As she realises that she is the only one invited to the show, his confidence gets the best of him while making this grand gesture and gets completely rejected.
I love this song favourite off of the album (but whole album is great) I get the video and think it's amazing.
Is this the preview for the new David Brent movie?
Loved it and hated it, loved it: because it can literally tell the story of a whole relationship in a 4 minute video through a slowed down 30 second video. hated it: because I just kind of hoped to see more, something that would hit me directly in the feels as the song did when I first heard it, the video didn't really do that for me.
3:11 you're welcome
I love the Red and Blue. Very good tie in to the album cover.
"We all have our own devices for handling mid-life crises, usually involves a motorbike and suspicious fashion decisions!" xD
t'y ji yt ujhh
Wrong song but totally true
I really like it! I'm so happy this song got a video and it's also very funny! Frank looks so cute with the rose in his mouth, lol
this is brilliant
Song is great but the video is just plain creepy.
Well that was an experience.
-hits blunt- oh sweet new frank turner video!
-watches-
-puts blunt out-
I think I just smokes crack
this is my absolute favorite song of the album, and in my opinion the video was great and original.
Well done Ben Morse!
wut? haha, love the song though
This was always my favourite song on the album
my favourit song xxxx
Elvis has definitely left the building after watching that
Viva El Rey!
Gotta admit, listening to this song did not make me think about Frank dressed as Elvis swaying his hips against a microphone with a murderous grin. I'll accept it though.
love the song but the video is shite
Never fails to impress
A bit slower and it would be like The Pixies' Velouria. Still, I love Frank and I love this song.
Couldn't watch this keeping a straight face haha 😂
Goodbye $4.99, hello new Frank Turner EP!
I may understand the metaphor.
I think this may be my favourite song from the album!
As far as I can tell, the video adds another layer to the song; in the song he sings about how he wrote and sang all these love songs for her and she never really reciprocated. But in the video it appears that the songs he was writing were in fact very hokey and dumb, which more justifies her point of view. I may be way off base here, though. Love the song, video is a little surreal.
I can't find the live performance anymoe, but he explained he wrote this song for a buddy of his who felt this way about a woman.
Wtf?! Frank, who told you this was a good idea? Fire the asshole now. In the darkest, deepest recesses of my mind, I can't find the correlation between the song and this video. Either your fans are too stupid for words, or someone on your team is a moron. Love the song.
+Mary Deak Cool, I'll fire myself then.
Maybe, just maybe, you're the one not getting it?
+Frank Turner keep doing what you're passionate about, ignorant people should be ignored.
+Frank Turner, you are gr8
Elvis is hokey, most love songs are hokey. It's a metaphor for basically being a love drunk mess pouring your heart into someone and having it not be reciprocated. It's the embodiment of the vulnerability you feel; the emotional equivalent of shoving a rose in your mouth and gyrating your hips suggestively at someone. It's subjective though, so maybe try using your head to find your own interpretation rather than dismissing something you simply don't understand.
+Mary Deak Clearly you've never been a performer. There's a difference between writing a love song and actually telling someone you love them. This is what the former feels like without the latter.
Amazing song...video isn't great.
This looks like a weird dream^^
Weird video but I like it.
he's the man
This is one of my favorite songs from the album. I don't quite understand the video though. Just ordered the EP. I cannot wait to hear the new songs.
Frank's being silly. There's nothing to understand....also that blonde is now his wife in real life....lol
Terrible, awful video. especially considering how great the video for Josephine was.
KayleighMorganMusic wrong
It’s not that bad come on, especially considering how awesome the song is
Tom Lukas is Better
Boop beep boop boop
omg this is amazing, i love frank so much. XD
Love this song!
One of my favourites off the album ♡
