Francis, Sage - Ubuntu (Water Into Wine) (2012) Lyrics

Ntokozo wants a yo-yo. A yo-yo. A yo-yo
She learned about the ups and downs
The kiddies want a photo. A photo. A photo
I let them take my camera so they can make their rounds
Thandiwe want's some paper. More paper. More paper
She's the boss. She draws Christmas trees with snow
I'm taking 'em home. All home
To the snowmen to show them what I think they need to know
About Zinhle, Sfundo, Zakheni
Snetemba... survivor... a promise made to many
An army of old souls in a battlefield of scattered ashes
Lost ancient wisdom, and ignored AIDS symptoms
UBUNTU. What's good for me is good for you
These brave soldiers combat the enemies of truth
In a broken system with an open wound that will never heal
If we just accept the way it is and never deal
An infection can spread to the head if you let it
Don't let it affect the way you think... like "this is it."
Oh, this is it? That's all there is for all these kids?
These warriors? A never ending waiting list at an orphanage?
As water drips in the bucket, I could add another drop
But I've got a feeling... that drop won't fix the leaky ceiling
If the leak gets fixed, what about when the roof collapses?
Six siblings sleeping on a single mattress
UBUNTU. What's bad for you is bad for me
Zinhle, Sfundo, Snetemba, Zakheni
Ntokozo, Thandiwe, stay strong... be brave
I'll make sure this world knows your names
You were born on the front lines of a country that isn't mine
With a virus I don't have, our family has no ties
Nevertheless, I see you
Sawubona. Yebo. Unjani? I'm fine
I'm just praying for science to turn water into wine
I'm just praying for science to turn water into wine
I'm praying we're not just left with prayer all the time
Ntokozo wants a yo-yo. A yo-yo. A yo-yo
She learned about the ups and downs
The kiddies want a photo. A photo. A photo
I let them take my camera so they can make their rounds
I've seen townships stand proud in the freeze-frame of a motion picture
I've seen kids risk exposing themselves to a social stigma
In the name of breaking patterns and cycles of ignorance
Hearts full of hope, eyes full of innocence
These are heros. Now I call to the heads of State
Recognize greatness when it's in your face
I traveled half the globe to see boys and girls stuck
Without assistance. You insisted on hosting the World Cup?
That ain't love, brother. What happened to you?
You beautified the parts of the city that tourists travel through
You built a gorgeous stadium that can't sustain itself
Flexing superficial muscles in a false display of wealth
Your most important resources need major help
Think of how the medication and information on AIDS is dealt
Beautify the way you save yourself
For God's sake, for human sake, for the sake of public heath
One medicine drop in a bucket eventually evaporates
The socks I bought Zakheni won't fix fractures or breaks
It's not my suffering. It's not my needlessly complex infrastructure
It's not my culture. Nevertheless I see you
Sawubona. Yebo. Unjani. How YOU doin'? I'm fine
I'm just praying for science to turn water into wine
Ntokozo wants a yo-yo. A yo-yo. A yo-yo
She knows about the ups and downs
The kiddies want a photo. A photo. A photo
I let them take my camera so they can make their rounds
Thandiwe want's some paper. More paper. More paper
She's the boss. She draws Christmas trees with snow
I'm taking 'em home. All home
To the snowmen to show them what I think they need to know
Along with this praise poem and every child's photo
Inspiration given by Zinhle, Sfundo
Thandiwe, Promise, Zakheni, Ntokozo
The kids call me "Big Show" - that's better than no show

@Sage Francis its about community. Us vs the Problem, and not Us vs Them. Win Win or no deal. How tf can we be happy with others suffering. I completely support your message, and strive to be the change I want to see in the world! Even if I make cliche computer geek references.

  22. D.... K....

great song but i have to admit i cringed every time he said their names. wow bantu names sound odd in an american accent

    D.... K....

Well, dang...sorry to have an accent. Heh. Did my best. They did my best to teach me the best to say all the words correctly but native accents are incredibly tough to shake. At least they found it humorous.

  23. O.... ....

Props to you sage. I wish i was in the position to do something similar. Peace and love.

  24. O.... ....

Some people really excel at written word, Some at freestyle, Some in battles. Sage doesn't excel at written word. He's a fucking master of it.

  25. D.... S....

Damn, Sage. Please don't take this as a rude remark, but on PKA your freestyle wasn't the best - but I guess that was solely due to you not being ready for the moment; but this. This is fucking gold! Props, dude. Your music's awesome!

  26. S.... S....

im from South Africa. This brought tears to my eyes i cant belive i missed Sage in SA

  27. J.... ....

Great video, Sage. I've spent some time in Uganda, and although it's very different, there's a lot in these lyrics that I can relate to. I'll have to do a bit more research on the work you do out there!

Look out for me I'd love to get involved in action for change. I'll do anything I physically am able to do to save humanity. Love amber

  33. m.... ....

Sage is effin legit. Keep it up.

  34. R.... F....

    nice human

  35. d.... ....

    wow, these lyrics are deep...

Without assistance. You insisted on hosting the World Cup?
That ain’t love, brother. What happened to you?
You beautified the parts of the city that tourists travel through.
You built a gorgeous stadium that can’t sustain itself,
Flexing superficial muscles in a false display of wealth.
Your most important resources need major help.
Think of how the medication and information on AIDS is dealt.

  36. d.... ....

this is the definition of hip hop right here! thank you for raising awareness and raising so much money everybody who has given. Judge society on how they treat the poorest.

  37. M.... M....

but you know for serious Sage Francis DOES look like "Big Show" from wrestling... just saying...O.O

  38. C.... ....

Brilliant! This is an omen of what is to come - public participation - - no more stupid wastefulness, costly infrastructure and wages that take all the money. Straight to the source. Noticed it with Cuba - the kids couldn't get strings for their instruments - PNG the medical clinic couldn't even get paracetomol. There must be a million small personal things we can eah do to help. Starting at home...

  39. S.... F....

As of 12/28/12 we have raised $3,672.81!
Instead of one single bed, the kids now have TWO separate bunk beds. Once the holidays are completely over, a person has been commissioned to fix their roof and other faulty items in their house. I'd like to thank everyone who's contributed. We'll continue to raise money, put it toward the bare essentials, school supplies, medical care and whatever else we can. The kids are incredibly grateful. This was a great holiday for them. THANK YOU!

  40. d.... ....

The voices of the children give me chills.. Chills of faith, and love.

  41. O.... ....

    Love it

  42. C.... L....

Everybody share this on Facebook so it gets more attention

  43. T.... B....

The realest shit I've heard in a long time. Respect, Sage. Respect.

  44. S.... M....

I've always been a fan of yours, but this has given me a new found respect for you, greetings from England :)

  45. M.... S....

Just that it reminds me of your older song Message sent's beat drums :)

  46. D.... M....

    Sagopadan Gelen ?

  47. F.... ....

And this is just another reason why I have crazy respect for Sage and the SFR family

  48. m.... ....

donated, thanks sage powerful song. So cool to see henry bowers towards the end. Does anyone know if he has a song about his experience?

  49. T.... ....

I never really buy into really political music. But Sage is the one guy who will always make me do exactly that!

  50. J.... ....

Sage Francis, you are an incredible human being sir!

  51. M.... S....

    beat ----> message sent ;)))

  52. d.... ....

    Henry Bowers!!

  53. P.... D....

Great cause for sure. What strikes me just as much is the beat. Sounds very organic, very suitable to the whole context. I wonder if that flute type of thing is synthesised and if not what instrument exactly it is?

  54. T.... ....

Keep up the fight sage. Speak truth, spread love and bleed for what you believe in. You're living the life we all need to give a chance. One not of self but of unity. It's a refreshing sight to see. Thanks.

  55. S.... F....

In the past 24 hours we have raised over $1000 for these kids! I'm so pumped about that. I can't wait to see the look on their faces once their home gets patched up. But we're aiming to do much more than that. Still...ughhh...I'm PUMPED. Thank you so much, strange fam.

  56. M.... R....

Your heart is even bigger than your talent. Thank you

  57. A.... C....

I hope you can raise a lot for these beautiful children and their families.

  58. S.... ....

    Powerful man.

  59. d.... ....

    Fantastic as always Sage!

  60. D.... W....

This is heartwarming as fuck. I gotta put the swear word in to mask my tears and femininity.
