The song is about a man who ask a woman to be with him for the night, most likely he was committed to another girl. But obviously he feels like he loves this girl so he spends the night with her asking her to make an exception for him because he has feelings for her. She does let him. But later he regrets doing that and decided he had a change of heart and wants to make his existing relationship working. This makes sense because the song is written in the perspective of the women and she refers to him as 86 Charlie. To 86 something means to get rid of it because it’s flawed somehow, whether it’s a menú item or etc. So Charlie is a flawed man who’s troubled trying to find answers to his love life. The beautiful part of the song is the ending when it builds and the chorus because it switches from being in just the perspective of the woman. The chorus could be said by both people. She’ll never forget him despite them not being able to have had a relationship and he’ll feel the same as well.

I just don't agree the song could be about that unimportant things like the money.She changed her mind and came back to tell him that she wants him and loves him. this makes bigger sense to me.... :/ but stories of songs can be pretty mysterious though...

This song is about loaning money from a friend :p it refers to Charlie who owes him 86€ ;)

To 86 someone is to get rid of them. So "Charlie" wants to off himself, and asks his friend to help him in some way, "to make an exception". But after Charlie leaves with the "help" he needs to off himself, he starts thinking it over and decides he's made a mistake.But Charlie comes back says he has decided to off himself anyway, is it too late. Friend says no, b/c he will never forget him. He is angry with Charlie in the end for putting him through all that,and for that he will be remembered.

I don't know how accurate my image of this song is, but I'm guessing "86-Charlie" borrowed 86 dollars, didn't pay it back, came back begging for more, and didn't pay again. Now Charlie's back again, and asking if it's not too late to ask for one last chance. And "I" says it's not too late, because "I" am "your" friend, no matter how angry you make "me".

OR Because of the lines "he wonders if it's not too late. it's not too late because I'll never forget you" maybe he's saying he could never NOT forgive, could never not forget him because he is his friend. :)

Maybe he does forgive him, but he's saying he really won't forget anything that's happened and just to remember that you can't act like nothing has happened, as if nothing has changed, and go back to doing their own thing.

It's hard for me to name a song one of my absolute favorites, but his gentle voice with that BEAUTIFUL piano rhythm..... Yeah, new fave, BIG time.

i didn't know Birdy did a cover of this. this has been a favorite for years. her cover is fine, but it's a little too thin and frilly for my tastes. this is just sort of simple and bone ragged, and i like it better for that

I like Birdy's cover better. In my opinion, I don't really like his voice. But I'm not gonna bash on Francis and the Lights. Birdy is a wonderful artist, but she wouldn't have made her fame without the artists who made the songs she covers.

When artists cover a song, people always seem to pick one to like more than the other as if it's impossible to love both of them the same. Think of it like salt and vinegar, individually they're pretty bloody good but put them both together and you have twice the magic.

@francisandthelights Oh wow, I never expect a reply from the up-loader himself! Now it makes so much more sense and even more painful :( I've seen some individuals who lost friends because they lent money to them and I've been told repeatedly that not lending money (no matter how much they need it) is more likely to keep the friendship intact...

The lyrics say "I'll never forget you", but it sounds like he means "I'll never forgive you". Is it just me or is it suppose to be like this?
