Fowlis, Julie - A Ghaoil, Leig Dhachaigh Gum Mhathair Mi (Love, Let Me Home To My Mother) Lyrics

A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi;
A ghràidh, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi;
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh gum mhàthair mi -
An tòir chrodh-laoigh a thàine mi.

Gur ann a-raoir a chuala mi
Mo ghaol a bhith ri buachailleachd,
’S ged fhuair thu ’n iomall na buaile mi,
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi.

’S mi dìreadh ris na gàrraidhean,
’S a’ teàrnadh ris na fàirichean,
Gun d’ thachair fleasgach bàigheil rium,
’S cha d’ dh’ fheuch e bonn ga chàirdeis rium.

Ged bheireadh tu crodh agus caoraich dhomh,
Ged bheireadh tu eachaibh air thaodaibh dhomh,
Ged bheireadh tu sin agus daoine dhomh,
A ghaoil, leig dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi.

Trodaidh m’ athair ’s mo mhàthair riut,
Trodaidh mo chinneadh ’s mo chàirdean riut,
Ach marbhaidh mo thriùir bhràithrean thu

Mura tèid mi dhachaigh mar thàine mi.
Gheall mo mhàthair gùn thoirt dhomh,
Gheall i ribean a b’ ùire dhomh,
Is gheall i breacan ùr thoirt dhomh
Ma thèid mi dhachaigh mar fhuair thu mi.

[Translation:]
Love, let me home to my mother
Darling, let me home to my mother
Love, let me home to my mother
I only came for the cattle.

It was only last night
That I heard that my love was herding
And though you found me at the perimeter of the cattle fold
Love, let me home as you found me.

I was clambering up the dykes
And descending the ridges
When a friendly lad met me
And he did not enforce his friendship on me.

Though you were to give me cattle and sheep
Though you were to give me tethered horses
Though you were to give me that and men
Love, let me home as you found me.

My mother and father will chastise you
My clan and my relatives will chastise you
But my three brothers will kill you
If I don’t return home as I came.

My mother promised me a gown
Decorated with the newest of ribbons
And she promised me a new plaid
If I return home the way you found me.

  27. p.... f....

its very beauyiful but its a pity the people who speak this language drove the people of caledonia and their language Cumbric, into extinction, so not so pretty perhaps

    p.... f....

was there a large number of Irish into Caledonia in 12th c?

    p.... f....

@Rich Gouette no from the roman genocide against the Caleds and '''pictii inthe 300's their supression of eerything was basically complete by 1300 almost nothing remains of their song, writing,, history, art, culture etc nothing the scots do can ever ecuse them of theircompleting the romans savagery. 44. P.... N....

@Julie Fowlis, thank you for sharing with us this Scottish Gaelic cultural treasure that continues the Celtic heritage! BIG LIKE FROM ROMANIA! We also had many Celts living in many regions. For example "Galati" town and county name in Romania comes from the Gals (Celts) that lived there. In "Transilvania" and "Maramures" area we also had many Celts who left beautiful traces in our culture, for example (very similar to the SCOTTISH ones) in the traditional Romanian textile motifs of alternative black and white squares, or in our traditional whistle music etc. In "Apuseni" mountains lived many Celts as well, and this can also be seen in the fact that men in that area had long braided hair. Search for "The Revolt of Horea, Closca and Crisan 1784" and you can see from their pictures that they had a Celtic hair style. These are only a few examples. There are many more!

    P.... N....

Welcome my friend. SAOR ALBA GU BRATH.

    .... ....

rich gouette if she has an interest in the (gaelic) music you should. It's a most rewarding journey!

    .... ....

she does indeed. She loves languages., and I'm certainly encouraging the Celtic flavours!
she was so motivated by Juli, she learned it phonetically in a day..

  89. O.... B....

What is the instrument that Julie is playing?

    O.... B....

Thank you. Too me, she is perfection.

    O.... B....

she has managed to singlehandedly, upset scores of eligible lads, when they discover she's already taken.
    ;)

    O.... B....

Harmonium, not Shruti. Shruti is smaller.

    O.... B....

Is indeed a harmonium, as it has a keyboard and can change notes throughout the performance. A shruti box is similar, but just drones selected notes continuously without changing pitch.

    O.... B....

What I'd like to know is what is the mandolin/bazouki-like instrument the man is playing?? Like a steel-string lute?

  90. a.... c....

What kind of instrument are you playing?

    a.... c....

    a Shruti

    a.... c....

Harmonium, see at the start of the commentsection for info

  91. D.... ....

Superb, the storyline conveyed in the lyrics and Julie's singing is very moving. The natural serenity of the Highlands and a type of sentimentality is evoked in mind. Being that there are such few fluent speakers of the Gaelic languages, must be preserved along with Scottish ethnic and cultural identity!

    h.... a....

I went to see Julie in concert yesterday... She was as beautiful, as gracious, and as talented as she is here on YouTube. She did this song, even though the shruti box wouldn't co-operate.... What a sheer talent she truly is...

  94. J.... T....

This is just so unbelievably beautiful, I can't stop listening to it. Makes me want to learn gaelic.

    J.... T....

had the joy of hearing her play this live just this past Sunday night....
    :)

    J.... T....

If you really want to do that (and I would encourage you with all my heart), this is the to-go-to place: http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/en/ . It is a campus of the University of the Highlands and Islands in a wonderfully out-of-the-world spot on the beautiful Isle of Skye. I was there last year to take my first two courses, they're always running end-to-end during 2 weeks of the college holidays. You can take a first sniff at Gaelic (I'd always advise to take levels 1 and 2 in succession), if you like it come back next year for the next 2 levels - that's what I'm planning to do. They have excellent teachers, the student community is great, and there's lots of overwhelmingly beautiful music. Even Julie herself is said to make an appearance there occasionally!

  95. R.... G....

one of the coolest music videos on the youtubes

  96. F.... d....

    its scottish gaelic?

    F.... d....

JUANINI'S. I believe Scottish Gaelic is spelled Gaidhlig. And for a half deaf and simple soul like myself when it's the word is spoken it sounds like a cross between the pronuncition of Gaelic and garlic. Hope that helps as a start.
