Four Tops - Do What You Gotta Do Lyrics

Do what you gotta do
Come on back see me when you can
Man I can understand how it might be
Kinda hard to love a girl like me
I don't blame you much for wanting to be free
I just wanted you to know
I've loved you better that your own kin did
From the very start it's my own fault
What happens to my heart
You see I've always known you'd go

So you just do what you gotta do
My wild sweet love
Though it may mean that I'll never kiss
Those sweet lips again
Pay that no mind
Find that dappled dream of yours
Come on back and see me when you can

Now I know it'll make you feel sad
And make you feel so bad
They say you don't treat me me like you should
They got ways to make you feels no good
I guess they got no way to know
I've had my eyes wide open from the start
And man you never lied to me
The part of you that they'll never see
Is the part you've shown to me

So you just do what you gotta do
My wild sweet love
Though it may mean that I'll never kiss
Those sweet lips again
Pay that no mind
Find that dappled dream of yours
Come on back and see me when you can

Listen to this twice to appreciate it even more ( If that's possible ) 1st listen :- Levi Stubbs voice is incredible, 2nd listen, without listening to his voice, the music alone is unbeatable. Simply stunning, and moving. Memories of my younger days absolutely flood back. Love it.

  29. S.... H....

I was never a massive soul fan but the lyrics & performance of this made me buy it at the time & still play it. Carol Morgan was about to dump me, I was 20. & this spoke to me.

  30. g.... ....

I was 19 when this charted sometime in the autumn of 69. It was a very happy time for me and the end of an era as the 60s drew to a close. Every time I hear it played it takes me straight back there. One of my all time top 10.

  47. e.... m....

    The heavenly voice of Levi

  48. J.... F....

I love the sentimentality of this song, and the strings accompaniment are so beautiful! Reminds me of something Puccini might have composed in his Italian verismo style.

Brilliant performance of a great song. This version is by far the best and should had been issued as a single.

    f.... h....

hey, it was released as a single 1969

    f.... h....

I was thinking about the United States. Yes, I know that it was a hit in Great Britain reaching Nr. 11 on the charts.

    f.... h....

I think it was released as a single here in the UK, or at least it was a B side

    f.... h....

frankie hunter sorry..always love the tops...but was expecting a more soulful version...does not start to compare with the version i grew up on...Al Wilson's..in fact that was the only version I knew until now.. one of the most underrated vocalists Al Wilson's version leaves nothing on the table

I was lucky enough to see the Four Tops in the early seventies. The roof came off when they sang this beautiful heart felt song. The girl with me at that time has now been my wife for 36 years. What an amazing time to have lived through.

  96. a.... ....

This is one of the Tops best ... though not commercially the success it should have been ... the soulful and gut wrenching sound of Levi Stubbs reaches into and right thru you ... Jimmy Webb wrote a hidden gem here ... RIP levi ...
