Folds, Ben - Not A Fan Lyrics

I'm not a fan,
But I understand
If there is something that moves you
That's not my cup of tea.
It's part of what makes you beautiful to me.

I'm not a fan
Like you and your friends.
You're so well read; I grew up on sugar cereal and TV.
I'm starting to wonder what you see in me.
No, I'm not a fan,
But maybe I could learn to be.

Oh, there's always something from the start.
You try to tell yourself it's only small,
But it's not.
And it's the very thing that later on will tear it all apart.

I'm not a fan,
And I wonder if you really are,
Or does it make you feel smart?
A boy band with glasses,
Just minus the heart.
He's shaking his ass,
And you call it art.
I'll wait in the lobby; go meet him for real.
We can all go to dinner, yeah, and I'll be third wheel.
So go get your t-shirt signed, fangirl.
I may or may not be here when you return.

So fuck you.

  9. D.... ....

Went to his concert yesterday and he explained that this song is about being in a relationship where you realize more and more that you are very different people and like very different things

    D.... ....

I was at his show in Adelaide and he explained that a man came into his dressing room questioning him about Brick armed with a knife, claiming "I'm not a fan, but my girlfriend is". The assailant got tackled out of the room. after the incident Ben got thinking about how people can be different when it comes to the art they enjoy, and it usually goes in 3 stages. 1, you think it's cool that they're different. 2, you start to notice it as a problem but think you can change to solve it. 3, the problem persists and you see it as a character flaw in the partner and then the inevitable breakup.

Man, I'd love to know what band he's referring to.

I just saw Ben Tuesday night. This is a song about when the boyfriend of a fan made it past security and into his dressing room. He told Ben he wasn't a fan of his work, but his g/f was. Asked him what the song "Brick" was about and Ben replied "I wrote the song so I wouldn't have to talk about it". The guy pulled a knife on him. This was many years ago.

I heard the same story at a show I attended. I'm assuming it was the same show in Morristown, NJ

    a.... ....

Actually at the show I went to yesterday he told the knife story but he said the band that challenged him were Korn.

Was hoping someone would comment this. He told this story at his Des Moines show last year.

Just saw him in St. Louis. Phenomenal show.

I saw him in St. Louis too. In '95 at the Pointfest 4 sidestage. He was really crazy on stage in those days. Made me a fan for life. I was 10! Ha

This sounds very similar to the improved 'Rock this Bitch' waltz he did with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra last October. Methinks he either liked it enough to use it for a song, or was working on this at the time.

Turn it up for the secret message at the end!
