Folds, Ben - Landed Lyrics

We'd hit the bottom,
I thought it was my fault
And in a way I guess it was
I'm just now finding out
What it was all about

Moved to the west coast away from everyone
She never told me that you called
Back when I was still, I was still in love

Till I opened my eyes and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
And it's bye-bye, goodbye, I tried
And I twisted it wrong just to make it right
Had to leave myself behind
I've been flying high all night
So come pick me up...I've landed

The daily dramas she made from nothing
So nothing ever made them right
She liked to push me and talk me back down
Until I believed I was the crazy one,
and in a way
I guess I was...

But I opened my eyes and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
And it's bye-bye, goodbye I tried
Treading a sea of a troubled mind
Had to leave myself behind
Singing bye-bye, goodbye I tried

If you wrote me off I'd understand it
Because I've been on some other planet
So come pick me up...
I've landed

And you will be so
happy to know
I've come alone,
it's over

But I opened my eyes and walked out the door
And the clouds came tumbling down
And it's by my goodbye I tried
Down comes the reign of the telephone czar
It's OK to call
Now I'll answer for myself

Come pick me up,
...I've landed

It's ironic how a song can make you feel so somber and so good at the same time. I don't know if it's the anguished lyrics set to a spirited melody or something else entirely but it just goes to show how emotionally powerful music can be.

  9. s.... ....

is it wierd that on my 60th listen to this song over 10 years this time it made me weep like a school girl?

I met this beautiful woman here in Arizona (my home state) and we had been together for a tumultuous 2 years before she moved to central Massachusetts. I followed her there and we began a life that was pretty good - we owned some pets and held secure jobs. I didn't have a cell phone of my own, but her father paid for hers and we got by with just that (it was agreed that we would share the line in lieu of having to worry about extra costs with phone bills and all that jazz). On many occasions, much to my dismay, I had calls that were for me that were never kept. These were calls from my father and close friends, and they suspiciously never left any voicemails.

A few months had passed, and even though I felt things were going great she somehow didn't want to keep things going as well as they were. Instead, she just looked me in the eyes one day and told me, "I don't think I love you anymore."

It came out of left field. Things were going so well I thought we would've been married within a few months.

But after moving to Massachusetts for her and basically spending everything I had (after selling my entire recording studio to help pay for the move) it just wasn't enough. And the thought of that made me almost go insane. So insane, that I can't even sit down at a piano without sobbing uncontrollably at what I gave up and how much I invested even today. The piano used to give me comfort. But it's been seven years since then, and I've pretty much given up on that.

How Ben was able to transcend that and write a song that pretty much nailed the feeling of heartbreak in light of sacrifice is just amazing - and how much it applies to me is one thing. But let it be known that there is no sorrow like the pain Ben describes here and the humiliation of calling someone because you've got nothing left afterward.

  78. T.... S....

I could have heard this song ten years earlier. Songs for Silverman originally came out on a proprietary Sony CD that hijacked your computer and wouldn't let you xfer the songs to an iPod. So infuriating that I ended up just throwing the disk away and quit listening to Ben Folds -- which is saying something, because I really, really liked his music. Just rediscovering it now that it's up on YouTube. Way to go, Sony Records.

Musically, this piece sounds so much like old Elton. Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water. Especially the strings. Startlingly similar Paul Buckmaster style.

  79. R.... L....

Ah, so powerful and emotive in a way that still gives me goosebumps all these years after first hearing it.
Ben Folds, you sir are a genius!

  80. H.... M....
