Foghat - I'll Be Standing By Lyrics

Standing in the shadows
Waiting for your love light to shine on me
When you're lonely and the pain shows
Call me, I'll be right there to set you free

Walking down a dark road to loneliness
The night has no mercy
I feel a need in me I can't express

I'll be standing by
I'll be standing by
I'll be standing by

Come to me, when you're lonely
You need someone to love, let it be me
The way you love me and hold me
Made me realize how sweet love can be

Standing on a backstreet in the falling rain,
Cryin' for mercy, until you come to me and ease the pain

I'll be standing by
I'll be standing by
I'll be standing by

[Rod - Solo]

I'll be standing by
I'll be standing by
I'll be standing by

I'll be standing by
There'll be no need to cry
I'll be standing by

Come to me, come to me,
'Cause I'll be standing - I'll be standing by

Got to see Foghat in Erie, Pa. on Dec 7, 1976 at the Fieldhouse. Was given the Night Shift album as a Christmas gift weeks later. This song immediately stood out to me as one of the best ballads that I'd ever heard and remains so to this day.

I first heard this song back in 1978... I didn't know that the album was released a couple of years earlier. My White co- workers were listening to a "Classic Rock" radio station. I was smoking weed, and when I heard it, I liked it almost right away! ( that guitar kicked ass toward the end of the song!) Since then, I have been into Classic Rock. Before then, being a Black man, I didn't think that it was cool to listen to the "White Boy Music" I have learned not to restrict myself to just R&B and Classic Soul, and good music shouldn't be categorized by the color of a person's skin!

Ronald Fields-I really enjoyed your comment. I am 61 and got to grow up during the GREATEST era, musically, that there ever will be. As a white dude, I have always, since a kid, known that the Black blues musicians were the foundation of Rock and Roll. ANY of the British and American Rockers of the '50s, '60s and '70s were always upfront, when it came to naming Black blues musicians as their primary influences. The members of Foghat were always straight forward about who influenced them and their music certainly showed that. I am thankful for the music of the '60s and '70s(Rock, Motown, Pop and Soul), because if it wasn't for THAT music, I wouldn't have much to listen to now, because 2018 has NOTHING to offer musically. Keep on ROCKIN', Bro!!!

This song touches the soul. Sadly as a one time drunk I would sit and play this over and over. Glad I came through that sad period of my life and can still listen to this song and feel the relief this song brought to the pain I had at tha time.
