Fogelberg, Dan - Phoenix Lyrics

I have cried too
I have cried too long
I have cried too
I have cried too long
No more sorrow
Got to carry on.

Found deep water
Before I'd even learned to swim
Found deep water
Before I'd even learned to swim
Never thought I'd
See the sun again.

Once I was a
Once I was a man alone
Once I was a
Once I was a man alone
Now I've found a
Heart to call my home.

Like a Phoenix
I have risen from the flames
Like a Phoenix
I have risen from the flames
No more living
Someone else's dreams.

I have cried too
I have cried too long
I have cried too
I have cried too long
No more sorrow
Got to carry on.

You almost had me, old lady
You almost tied me down good
You played the lady in waiting
And I waited as long as I could.

Too long the songs have been silent
Too long the strings have been still
I never knew what you wanted
And I guess that I never will.

Like a Phoenix
I have risen from the flames
Like a Phoenix
I have risen from the flames
No more living
Someone else's dreams.

I have cried too
I have cried too long
I have cried too
I have cried too long
No more sorrow
Got to carry on.

@5:25 THAT ain't No Lady, folks. WWHOAAA

  3. J.... H....

amazing artist. he was a true storyteller. they're not many. his work will last thru time

  4. s.... ....

    Underrated guitar player!

  5. R.... C....

I saw Dan live at the LA Forum 1981 or 1982. Wasn't feeling particularly like mellow, but the show started with his quiet, ballady stuff. Then, he said something like "so much for the pretty stuff, now let's rock" and launched into this song and the other Phoenix rockers. Incredible.

  6. A.... a....

Men were not under the attack that is what is university dogma product then, but I so miss masculine men that can feel - and he is such a great part of how I learned to feel it.

  7. J.... H....

one of my very favorite songwriters. his work has such resonance & depth. such a rare talent, gone way too soon. true songwriters of this talent are so very rare

  8. L.... W....

Bill, you know I love your discretion in your visuals regarding our mutual hero Dan, but why did you cast out the wonderful crescendo at the end of Phoenix and segue in the Tullamore Dew intro again? I can listen to it just as the original goes, but I am curious and mean no disrespect or disregard for your decision.

  9. S.... G....

This song was terrific when it first came out I remember the 80's. Dan Fogelburg miss you RIP.

  10. G.... ....

    I have cried too long.
No more sorrow, got to carry on

Thank you Dan and JME for your art and inspiration

  11. C.... H....

Dan's quote at the end, while you incorporated Tullamore Dew to finish, was awesome. I know first-hand of the heart muscles resilience. I survived a 5-way bypass 18 months ago. RIP Dan. Thanks for posting!!

  12. C.... H....

Love the title of this intro!! Tullamore Dew is a fine Irish whiskey.

  13. C.... L....

Love the hammer on hammer off at about 6:19 reminds me of romancing the stone score love the pocket of history this was born from . Music is as at its zenith...

  14. D.... R....

This guy is a monumental talent! I'm so sad it took me so long to discover him properly, "sigh"

  15. M.... C....

Trying to pick my favorite Dan Fogelberg song is like trying to... choose my favorite gold piece from a huge pile of gold pieces!

  16. T.... ....

I won't lie but for some reason I always thought this was Kenny Loggins. Same musical genre but Dan had that golden voice....

  17. J.... L....

This one of my favorite tunes from the Maestro👍🏻❤️😢

  18. e.... ....

sounds like a good fleetwood mac

    Very thoughtful music

  22. L.... W....

Hi, Bill! I'm going to make this my next pick on killer rockers on my FB page. It's # 7 (chronologically, not ranked). I love this awesome video, brother.

  23. L.... G....

Is that a 12 string guitar

  24. T.... R....

When I first started taking finger style lessons, Dan Fogelberg was required learning. First song was "Longer", in standard tuning, although I believe he played it in an alternate tuning. Then, "Gypsy Wind". Back when music was music! I performed "Phoenix" awhile back at a coffee house, along with "The Reach". Last year I performed "The Reach", after giving a short lecture for a college course I am taking. Thank you very, very much for posting this video.

  25. R.... S....

Had to come back again to reassure myself you were still here.
I needed you then, i need you now.

  26. P.... M....

That's Dan playing electric guitar... very under rated

  27. D.... T....

Pure Awesomeness. Masterpiece of a Rock song. Thanks for the video & liner notes ☮️

  28. T.... N....

I played this over & over (the prelude) after the death of my best friend. 10/2/92
I just read the bio of the song & never knew it was referring to the heart!

  29. B.... C....

An incredible achievement. One could only hope to leave for the community art as significant as this song. Glad I got to see him in concert.

  30. G.... W....

    Wonderful

  31. P.... L....

This song & album was introduced to me by my older brother that tragically took his life a year ago. He turned me on to so much great music. I miss you Bob.

  32. A.... D....

This song overwhelms me with the importance of grabbing hold of one's Life. We can all bemoan our lack of good fortunate in this messed up World. I remember driving somewhere fun w/ my late wife and thinking I have EVERYTHING I can need to enjoy each day and be grateful to God! This is what this song captures & restores in my Mind & Heart. My deepest Thanks to the late Dan Fogelberg!!!!

  33. J.... B....

    masterpiece.

  34. S.... C....

    Fantastic video!

  35. S.... S....

Thank You for this treasure, JMEagle101, this song has been my anti-depression anthem since my sister, Cindy, first played it for me when she brought his Phoenix album home. I was 12 and we had lost our Dad to a heart attack a few months prior. This amazing song helped me recover and carry on. Towards the end, when Dan tears off those 5 Yeahs!! in a row, my soul just soars,..........gets me Every time. Thanx Again

  36. m.... ....

Yes I've been looking for a print or sculpture of a phoenix and see that you have several prints of a phoenix during this video. Can you tell me where you came about them and I would love to have one if you knew where the source is. Miss Dan very much thanks

  37. M.... H....

Both of these tracks are therapy for me. There is a ride I take on a vintage Kawasaki KZ1100 A-3 with this going in the headphones. Between the saddle time and audiotherapy I return home a much more settled fella.

  38. T.... M....

In the 70s I was obsessed with Dan's music. As I got older my music taste changed but i would still play my DF albums but somewhere along the road i stopped listening to Dans later music. The past couple of years I have been listening to every song Dan has recorded. I am in awe of his amazing talent, the great man he was..we are blessed to have these recordings of Dans music. What a gift thank you DF you are still my hero

  39. M.... N....

    Happy song!

  40. C.... R....

    Amazing multi talented man.
Had the pleasure of seeing him solo and with various Fogelberg bands through the years.
    I am grateful for that.
    peace...

  41. W.... C....

AWESOME AGAIN !! ................................... as I Suspected / Expected it Would Be !! MANY THANKS BROTHER !!

  42. M.... R....

Like a Phoenix I have risen from the flames...

  43. d.... c....

Dan Fogleburg is part of my heart . From the late 70's.. Love and miss you Dan. I wish I could have seen you live

    d.... c....

    yes !

    d.... c....

    Me too, man.

  44. C.... c....

Phoenix has an unusual sturcture. Sort of like call and response, however the phrases are repeated and by the same musician. Know the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" !

  45. k.... c....

I just wish you 'wannabe' producers would quit fucking with the original. This guy is not to be tampered with.

    k.... c....

    kevin cornell
    'wanna be producer' ?

    hats off to the person
that produced the beautiful scenes of nature video
    and also.
    'tampered with' ?
are you Dan Fogelbergs manager ?
did Dan Fogelberg tell you he did not approve of this video ?
    and also,
    Dan Fogelberg is NOT
    ' this guy '

  46. R.... G....

One of my favorite intros of all time! Miss you Dan

best lead in on any record I've ever heard.

    q.... 1....

That soaring guitar really moves me too.........so clean and expressive. Under appreciated to be sure.

    J.... S....

    John S
    yes!

  55. J.... B....

Great tune and great guy, but why cut the ending off and throw the opener back on? Oh well.

    J.... B....

+Jeff Bluml I get what he was after, but the final ending of "Phoenix" is so strong, so heart-thumpingly uplifting, it hurts to return it to "tullamore Dew", which was, and remains, a better lead in, as the artist intended. But, as you said, "Oh well." Someone else's dream (to quote the author) of this piece. Pretty decent recording, however, and much-appreciated images for the video.

    J.... B....

    Sandra McIntyre
beautiful nature video and musicians video

    J.... B....

Yep, just the motivation to pull out the old vinyl and hear the majestic ending Dan intended for Phoenix.

  56. A.... C....

    DF the best

  57. R.... W....

Pheonix is such an inspirational song ...one of my faves of Dan...It lifts me out of the darkness and lets me "see the sun again" !

  58. c.... b....

Shoeshineidaho - try it on a 12 string!   12 string in dropped D sounds much fuller and covers botht eh guitar and synth parts in Tillamore Dew.  Saw him do a solo concert at the Anaheim Convention Center back around '78 or '79,  1 guy solo for a venue that big - ballsiest concert I think I'll ever see.  Grand piano, a chair, a mic, and a 6 string and 12 string was all he used for a few hours.  Ended up with EVERYONE doing Place in the World for a Gambler. Best concert I'll ever see.

    c.... b....

+climber bob Oh, how I envy your experience. What a time in the life of the world, those years, and what a gift this man's music was, and still is.

    c.... b....

climber bob I saw him at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. Ended up on the stage steps during “Gambler”. Best entertainer I have ever witnessed live. He lives on in my heart and mind. “Ever On”

  59. T.... S....

So amazing. Such a talent and what great lyrics.

  60. m.... ....

Regret all the other wonderful music he would have written, he passed too soon

    m.... ....

mandarinlearner - I sang longer to my bride @ our wedding as a surprise to her. Love his
    Good music.

  61. k.... s....

This song is life, chapin, cat, croce, all gave, to enjoy something that we all hold. Love, peace and friendship" a bond". Even in the quietest moments. One song we all forget, "There's a place in the world for a gambler"

  62. j.... m....

I remember when this first came out.. I was awestruck and deeply moved by this song,, I still am; to this day.
Try listening to this song during dawn's break. dance to it and move to its music,, it will transform your spirit...that is what I think he wanted for all of us.. to dance like children and reconnect with our inner child whenever we hear this song; and be so joyous in it's glory and spiritual awakening. There is something very transforming about this song; you will see it, if you just listen with your heart ! God Bless DF: we will always remember you whenever we hear this song; and keep you in our hearts. RIP.

    MEEEEEEE TOOOOOOOOOO!

    j.... m....

I’ve only just heard of him. I have been listening to a lot of old Steve earl and live his loose country rock style. The chapters of rock are so very deep and I’m on the look out for more of this music

  63. 1.... ....

what an awesome video to support two of DF's greatest compositions - nice stuff!

  64. J.... J....

Absolutely fantastic song and artist. He is greatly missed.

  65. M.... R....

Amazing song Dan is a national treasure.RIP

  66. L.... S....

    Ie,

I have cried too, I have cried too long.
I have cried too, I have cried too long.
No more sorrow, got to carry on!!

  71. b.... ....

Something interesting about this song, is that he used a sort of "blues structure" in the lyrics, repeating a line twicr than followed by a different one, but instead of accompanying it with blues music, he slammed some rocking guitars on top of it, a microcosm of the message of rising from the ashes that the song is all about!!! Did anyone else see that, or am I the only one who was brilliant enough to notice it?? I'm pretty proud of myself... enjoy!! :O)

    b.... ....

bookguitarguy I like you dude your funny. Blues and country is what I hear. but like 77 to83 county rock w/ it’s airy fly high licks and solos. Music like this makes me think of the western states . College kids from the middle west or east coast. Driving their muscle cars or thumbing all the way to golden California. But stopping off For a month to spend in Rocky Mountain national park to live off the grid. He looks like he was pissed at his parents . Was probably an amazing student (judging by the technical nature of his playing) but like the generation before him found it to be well.. bullshit. All of it. But his music lives . I’m actually in this dan fogelberg space because Garth brooks was a fan of his and elevated his name by playing this very song in a benefit concert . And yes I’ve been smoking beets and drinking weed

  72. b.... ....

Thanks for the one decent version of Phoenix on YouTube!! I guess you're aware that the end of the song is cut off though, and that Tullamore Dew repeats at the end?? Would it be a lot of trouble to upload it again, with the proper ending?? Either way, thanks for your uploads. :O)

  73. D.... N....

No better testament to Fogelbers musical and lyrical genius than this set of somgs!

  74. S.... ....

  75. S.... ....

"Mr. Fogelburg", oh lord, he'd get a kick outta' that! Don't get me wrong, he deserves the "Mr.", but I'm sure he'd be lookin' for the "Leader of the Band" over his shoulder- - Ha!

  76. S.... D....

So relevant to those of us who live with HIVAIDS. Lyrics mean everything...especially today. RIP Dan.

    S.... D....

Scott DeBerg good luck to you . ... we’re all just passin thru but go damn it’s beautiful anyway

  77. R.... K....

I wish to thank whomever posted this tune, Dan's skills were mystical and special in a holy way for me , this tune like many of his other recordings takes me back to friends that have passed away......great memories .......I miss the friends still

  80. J.... ....

Thank you Andrew, Dan is watching from above, and I hope I did his music justice. Happy Holiday Greeting for your family!!

    J.... ....

Hey JMEagle101, do NOT let these "purist" pricks that complain that you tampered with Dan's song get you down or stop you from doing your thang. I enjoyed the hell out of it. I know how it ends like everyone else, but I ended up digging what you did with it. If people want it pure, let them listen to their album cut, Right. Thanx Again for transforming one of my anthems into an audio/visual masterpiece. PEACEout, sps

  81. A.... Z....

Fantastic job! I wish Dan was with us to see your wonderful work you do with his music.

  82. J.... H....

    DAN ROCKS!

  83. M.... ....

I was 16 in Sam Ash when I came across an album with a guy who looked like jesus and had a really funny name. I was also really stoned at the time. But when I put it on I was amazed and 12 years later the Fogelchrist continues to stand against all the mundane shit that is being pumped out. He truly is amazing, under-rated and an amazing writer who I'd put on par with Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel. (Speaking of funny names.) Fogelberg & Garfunkel. Pardon, couldn't resist.

  84. Z.... ....

It was because of this song and the meaning of the Phoenix that my mom changed her name to Phenix many years ago. (It's also quite a catchy name.) Long live from the ashes!

  85. M.... ....

    Awesome track, awesome video!

  86. B.... D....

Picked up this vinyl for a quarter at my local record store, judging by this video I can't wait to listen to it.

  96. T.... O....

Fantastic song and video is wonderful! Great work on this! Saw him in Denver many years back, what a thrill that was!

  97. B.... ....

You can listen to this song everyday and it never gets boring. but you can also listen to it everyday and it doesnt really get interesting either ..and it shreads my ears ... geez it hurts THAT GUITAR IS UNTUNED

  98. s.... ....

This was my favorite song when I was 10....and it's still up there.

  99. B.... J....

@midstar1820 If you've concluded that no one cares about Dan Fogelberg, you have concluded incorrectly

  100. J.... H....

@DANSFANFOREVER listen to the treasure you now hold. In the lyrics you will find beautiful poetry with great depth and in the music great artistry, something of which most of today's music is quite bankrupt. If you still don't care for his music, that's fine. Your taste in music is different than ours. But don't insult him and us by placing your snide remarks on a page that is clearly for his fans.
