Fogelberg, Dan - Love Gone By Lyrics

Try your best to see through the confusion
Seems the more you see
The less you try
You don't know what's real and what's illusion
If you don't know by now then how should I?

(I've been thinking 'bout the)
Love gone by
Honey, has the well run dry?
It's enough to make you cry
Thinking 'bout the love gone by.

Give me back my heart
And call it even
Ain't no use in figuring who's to blame
Once I thought this love was made in heaven
Now I think it's just a crying shame.

(And I've been thinking 'bout the)
Love gone by
Honey, has the well run dry?
It's enough to make you cry
Thinking 'bout the love gone by.

Winners never know the worth of losing
'Til the prize has slipped right through their hands
Love will take a heart of its own choosing
And break it if you try to understand.

(We're left with nothing but the)
Love gone by
Honey, has the well run dry?
It's enough to make you cry
Thinking 'bout the love gone by.

This is on the B side of "Part of the plan" 45. Practically bore a new groove on both sides.

This sounds very 'tinny.' Also sounds like it's playing at a sped-up rate. Not sure if it's just a bad copy that was posted or bad production values on the album.
This was not a hit for him. The 'hook' in the song just didn't hook.
    Gone way too young....
    R.I.P. Dan Fogelberg

compression removes the warmth of his music.
    washes out all the midrange.

Mona Bale I knew the CD version of Nether Lands long before I got an original promo copy on vinyl. There are significant differences (CD version of this song seems to be missing an organ track, for example). Still not as egregious as the remixed drums on the CD version of “Home Free” though.

Jackson Browne must have liked the arrangement, especially the slide guitar part (Dan used a lap steel), based on "Running On Empty."

It does sound tinny, but to me the hook always hooked.

I enjoyed listening to this song!
    I miss Dan.😢

  4. J.... H....

    This should've been a hit

This is easily one of his best tunes! Too bad people were stupid and ignored this song.......

Peoria Illinois produced some great artist ...Dan Fogelberg, Gary Richrath there are some older ones but these two I grew up with, living outside of Peoria, use to see R.E.O. live and Dan live at Bradley University.

    J.... F....

This song did not get the air play as "The Power of Gold." It's a shame!

  6. M.... F....

You don't hear rock like this no more.

What were these radio disc jockeys thinking? This song, and others like "Lost In The Sun", and "Stolen Moments","She Don't Look Back", Exiles", "False Faces","Face The Fire",and a dozen or more other Dan songs should have been hits! Sincerely,BobbyK

I have never understood why this wasn't a hit...it rocks pretty hard and has some great lines ("Give me back my heart and call it even...")

They were hits Fogelberg was not famous in every part of the country. Only certain areas even heard of him. Remember that music world was in full blossom during his popular years. The radio waves were FULL of talent. Not like now.... Rap music anyone? No thanks...

If he had joined the eagles before he went solo you probably would have heard this on the radio. But he went his own way. I think it was for the best. Look how divided the eagles were. Still he always sold lots of albums and those of us who bought them listened to them cover to cover. They always had such great nuggets of gold on them.

  8. B.... J....

I always liked Dans' songs that rocked. This is one of the best.

  9. L.... G....

This was actually one of my very favorites of his music.

  10. Y.... M....

Flopped as a single, but so much better than most of his later hits.

    Y.... M....

Agreed. His easy listening soft rock stuff made him lots of money though. And then he died young. Life is strange.

    Y.... M....

chalk it up to scarring caused by tonsil removal.

Apparently his record company had high hopes for the single, based on this ad:
