Flobots - Panacea For The Poison Lyrics

In my mind I hold the passion, panacea for the poison
My bruised and battered body washes up upon the shore
Sin flees from leaking wounds like rats from sinking ships
As I float off to forever with these words upon my lips
No I never asked for nothing and that's just what I got
As my pride dies before I do as I fall I'm also caught
I wasted many days chasing brightly gleaming streams
As I fold into your presence, do I now know what it means

We could get old
And talk at the same time when we tell stories
If we let go
Impossible names rhyme in elegant poetry
What I sample in everything
It inundates my small town
I refuse the offers extended waiting for God
Now I never asked for nothing audible
So when the walls fall down and spin like water wheels
I'll pray for something logical
So when we all drown
I can cover bald spots with yamakas
Drawn from extra dimensional sources
Like in comic books
Choose your own adventure
I'm obsessing like a drug fiend
Fantasies of actors clandestinely having sex in love scenes
But why not amateurs openly sharing joy in sex scenes
Stand clear while I soak in this treasure trove of a wet dream
I can't tell what my problem is
Or even if there is one
Sail the celibacies much sooner than commit one
Escaping minor shake-ups but keep bracing for the big one
To make the choices obvious and save us from decisions

In my mind I hold the passion, panacea for the poison
My bruised and battered body washes up upon the shore
Send fleas from leaking wounds like rats from sinking ships
As I float off to forever with these words upon my lips
No I never asked for nothing and that's just what I got
As my pride does before I do as I follow muscle code
I wasted many days chasing brightly gleaming streams
As I fold into your presence, do I now know what it means

I dreamt of whimsy
In a fire fight with the in-the-line-of-fire flies
Watch the dusk go indigo and blush into a silent night
Birth immaculate conscious from a pregnant pause
In the August of my righteousness just waiting for the fall
The greater and the small, all for one and one for all
For all the S.O.S and we will rise to the call
I've bitten the hand that feeds and found myself bleeding here by
I'll only need what I need
But need will get me out of my groove
So I move to different tunes
Sunning in the warm weather
By the light of distant moons
There's tape men in the nation bring the monsoon
Season with the spectacle of people finding tools
Aphrodite, grown fools, and buyers sown booze
Let's throw out the cravings and things with no use
People dropping jewels, gems can't shine like odd light
To air is human, so the sky is our birth right

In my mind I hold the passion, panacea for the poison
My bruised and battered body washes up upon the shore
Sin flees from leaking wounds like rats from sinking ships
As I float off to forever with these words upon my lips
No I never asked for nothing and that's just what I got
As my pride dies before I do as I fall I'm also caught
I wasted many days chasing brightly gleaming streams
As I fold into your presence, do I now know what it means

In my mind I hold the passion, panacea for the poison
My bruised and battered body washes up upon the shore
Sin flees from leaking wounds like rats from sinking ships
As I float off to forever with these words upon my lips

I finally found it. for three years I searched, and finally, I have found it again. this has been one of the most intense times of my life, I literally couldn't stop thinking about it, now that I found it again, I can enjoy life.

TheFlute InTheBack a man seeking forgiveness for a life lead of selfishness on his death bed

    Erick Orduno

Well the whole album takes on a huge metaphor of comparing the ocean/sea to the whole world and all of society.
    I believe in this song:
the chorus paints the picture of a sailor who is dying and is beginning to look back on his life with regret, and that represents a person who is on their deathbed doing the same. The chorus explains that life has left him "bruised and battered" and that he has made many mistakes, but in the end he believes in heaven (the Passion) and it's the only thing that will save him, as he calls it the "Panacea". The definition for panacea is basically an end all, be all cure that can fix all the problems of a situation or dilemma. He says that he's trading the poison of this world for the salvation of Paradise.
In the first verse, he explains the life he lived and some of his thought-processes. It explains how he held back from a lot of things, as he also chose to remain celibate his entire life since he never actually found a partner he could consider the one ("refused the offers, waiting for God..."). He viewed most intimate relationships like those of pornos, saying that they show passionate couples engaging in romance but they're not like the REAL thing. He questions, however, that maybe he's the one with the problem, but ultimately ops for his own personal fantasies about romance. He thinks being tied to someone intimately is too risky and would rather wait to commit at the last minute when the choice was "obvious".
The second verse has a lot of parts that trips me up still, to be honest, but I think it has to do with his ego. He calls it "the August of his righteousness". August is the height of the year, leading me to believe that this is him when it comes to his world-views. He sort of brags about seemingly guiding what he considers his world through to the beginning of an era. ("Watched dusk go indigo...") meaning that he brought his world from darkness and into the first light of a new day. The second verse probably takes place long after the "events" of the first verse. I think, though, that his ego began to get the best of him up until his dying moments ("... bitten the hand that feeds...").
But then we back to the chorus, where his life is ending and he's reminiscing.
IDK, that's my interpretation about it, I guess. I'm pretty sure I'm wrong in plenty of areas , but what do you all think?

does anyone have any clues as to what this song is about?

    Daniel Feldspar

From what I can tell, people can't even agree on what the lyrics are.

    Java Junkie

I'm pretty sure it's talking about regrets while standing on the edge of death - of things we should *do* rather than things we *buy* -that we consume ourselves with consuming rather than giving, staying away from relationships and judging others rather than building them up, forgiving our own sins while condemning others. Recognizing these things at the edge of death and realizing how many ills we could have cured during our lives. That's how I see it anyway.

    TyFighterrr

Its a song that lets you feel the meaning for it yourself. Universally.

    Jake Triet

It's about someone dying in regret because he denied his true inner passions in favor of seeking wealth (brightly gleaming streams) and approval of others. This song is based on the concept of self-actualization in psychology. Being true to oneself and following one's true passions rather than denying them is the panacea (cure) to the sickness that is living a shallow meaningless life.

The verse sung by Johnny 5 describes growing old living in fear and hiding one's problems, while simultaneously having big, unfulfilled dreams.

  28. Marcos Garcia

@DSPcantfindwork i dont know man..... people are into hip-hop and techno and scremo...... people who love the blues have died, except us man, except us.

    Java Junkie

I disagree - most of the young people I know, including my 25 year old son and the many of his friends that have stayed in touch with me since his high school days, they cling to songs with deep meaning as soon as they're ready to handle deep things. Have faith, Mr. Garcia, all we need is to show these young people what matters is the strength of your character, your dedication and loyalty to truth, family, friends, raising humanity up, etc. and they flock to music with meaning. It's the garbage on TV that's distracting them from anything with substance. The reality shows, the circus of the media, commercials and the empty people who are famous for flaunting their emptiness with the millions of dollars they made giving up pieces of their soul... Then their music is all about being drunk, shitty, and materialistic. Get them away from trash, teach them to search for truth and meaning, and music with deep soul (like most blues, and definitely *all* Flobots) automatically dominates their playlist. From my experience anyway :)

  29. multigunlover

@Shaneage its like im always finding a new song from them. i love this band
