Flaming Lips, The - Us And Them Lyrics
Us and them
And after all we're only ordinary men
Me and you
God only knows it's not what we would choose to do
And the front rank died
And the General sat, and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side
Black and blue
And who knows which is which and who is who
Up and down
And in the end it's only 'round and 'round and 'round
"Haven't you heard it's a battle of words?"
"Listen son," said the man with the gun
"There's room for you inside."
Down and out
It can't be helped but there's a lot of it about
With, without
And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about
Get out of the way, it's a busy day
And I've got things on my mind
For want of the price of tea and a slice
The old man died

Flaming Lips, The Us And Them Comments
Like a car crash in slow motion, I just can't look away.
A monumentally poor interpretation of Us & Them...very much in keeping with the career of the Flaming Lips.
courageous to cover this album! this version is not really successful though, it misses the point: the very moment when the refrain starts and the choire enters: "forward he cries..." the tension is so beautifully built up in the original, just listen again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDbeqj-1XOo
It’s not supposed to sound like the original, it’s not to be compared to the original, it’s art, it’s interpretation, it’s a unique twist on a unique song, Flaming Lips are outside the box, they push the boundaries further & further, open your minds, it’s a short life, live a little you narrow minded androids
❤️❤️🍷
Not pink floyd,
FUKIN HELL
Boring. As if anything Floyd did needed a cover
shut up
People don't cover things that 'need' a cover. But thanks for the laugh.
if you dont like it your mind is closed
Such a closed minded statement
That sucked.
Was that Henry Rollins?!?!
"forward they cried from the rear and the flank whent down" not building energy there reallly hurt this cover
Wow, I like TFL, and I love Floyd. So, I'm kinda so unimpressed by this that I feel overwhelmingly annoyed. One word... BORING.
You, my best sir, have no idea what you are speaking of :)
This one or Poor Mans Whiskey? Life is full of tough choices.
is there an album for this? how do i get it all?
The beauty of art is it challenges us to think for ourselves. not everyone HAS to like it, :)
sax, from what i remember was syd barret's idea before he left the band. reading your comments comes to a conclusion that you are not ready to comprehend pink floyds music.
till then, be careful before you make any judgements about shit you don't know.
Good, but not even close to the original.
Floyd only put the sax in there as a traditional cover for their lack of ideas, imagination and inspiration. The sax solo sucks. Fished out of some MOR sample case. Should have given the sax player a field of disortion and effects pedals.
Rodney Ian Hatch pink Floyd is the greatest band of all time next the dead and zep are you kidding me?!
its the way Floyd would have played it ten years before. The angst and ecstasy are set off perfectly... Psychedelia is about simultaneously loving and knowing it's over. So be it. Floyd turned to total despair without considering any other options because they got tired. Flaming Lips aren't tired. They love and BELIEVE the message of psychedlia. Be sad! Be bliss! Be giggle!
Flaming Lips are students and masters of the true emotional content of the psychedelic. They play it the way Floyd would have played it 10 years before. Psychedelia is energetic inspiration, flashes of insight, soaring hope and happiness all seeded with sadness of understanding that its already dying as it begins. Hell, now that is funny!
Floyd had finished - were incapable - of being what they originally started out to be. A hard-edged, skeptical but still ecstatically psychedelic band. Their attitude was slipping and eventually they became that boring, biographical, slow noted pap. Inspiring? No way. The Wall sucks with ennui. who cares?
Yeah, well that's just like your opinion man
Such a good cover I cant help but come back for more
I quite like The Flaming Lips, and it's cool that they tried something different, but ugh this just doesn't sound good to me. Honestly though, even an amazing cover would still probably bug me since I've heard the original album so many times.
I think they nail it actually. I really cant understand the negative comments here. There is no sax cos that would make it sound too similar. Covering a song is a matter of capturing the atmos of the original tune/ track- and also, to add a little ingredient of your own. I think the vocals on this version are more haunting than the original. (double tracked with chorus)
couldn't have said it better. glad someone here understands what i mean. i think the worst one is "breathe" though. terrible cover. they shoulda just worked on original stuff rather than making this failed attemt
Very true. this is one fail of a cover. can't believe they actually wasted all that time to make this.
Endorfinas, ON!!! :D
To me, The Flaming Lips (and maybe Tool) are the only band that can cover Pink Floyd without completely crucifying the song. They did a pretty good job.
don't be silly
I love that lil David Gilmour imitation in the beginning. It sounded like an acoustic.
:notbad:
Just listen to their albums, albums are better then play lists :), I recommend yoshimi vs the pink robots
WOW!!!!!!! Now the Gods have something to think about..... Not that it matters....Such reverence.
This is beautiful, and I'm a huge Floyd fan
cool and everything, but I miss the saxophone
stardeath and the white dwarfs had a lot to do with this too
Nothing's better than PINK FLOYD.
Wow, how did I miss this?? I heard this for the first time last night on CBC radio, dropped everything and just sat enraptured....
@MCTheo3 i love their version
@shonenwarrior9550
2 words; Baritone Sax
Ok, just found an awesome way to listen, if you can spare the time to sync each multiple times...
If you sync each part of this and the original just right, it sounds pretty dang awesome!
If only they were closer, so you wouldn't have to keep screwing with the timing to either get the music or the lyrics synced for 30 second stretches... (or heck, just use one set of lyrics, if they have that somewhere...)
Outstanding. A great take on a great song. Hey guitar players, this version is a blast to play along with...tryitu'llikit! To all the armchair purists- shut the fuck up. If you don't like it, go listen to something else.
so weird without the reverb
magical.... i wish someone would post the anne bisson version which is also dreamlike.
So, so beautiful. This is a virtual crossing of the streams and our universe, as we know it, is forever changed.
Very phsicadelic cover :)
dunno why everyone is bitching, the flaming lips get a pass to cover a song however they want. they do a good job i wouldnt expect any less.
Rick would of been proud of the organ sound, but unimpressive otherwise.
@FivetimeRavage ..OKAY!
@sammyjsolocareer you wrote it!
@FivetimeRavage uhm.. I did.
@sammyjsolocareer who said that?
This is a good cover but for the people complaining, listen to between the buried and me's cover. It's pretty much note for note and it's good. I for one like that I can finally comprehend the banter in this song because of the American accent.
@sockpuppetmartinez You're right, when people cover a song, they should do it their way.
Except when you're covering Pink Floyd. Don't take chances.
@sockpuppetmartinez Fiiinnnallly, someone who fucking gets it. Every time I see a comment saying "why couldnt they just cover it note for note?!" or something along those lines, I just get so frustrated with everyones lack of creativity.
this is my favorite track off of dark side of the moon. this is a very interesting interpretation of it.
If you are going to cover something, cover it (as done here). Don't just copy it (that's what Kareoke is for).
Expand your horizons, the original is the same age as me (nearly 40). Get over it. Stop smoking dope, get up off your arse and go have a look at what else is out there.
That said, the original is one of those albums I keep finding myself coming back to, it gets a regular outing on my turntable/CD player/laptop/mp3 player
Is it only me, or did this song make more sense when The Flaming Lips covered it?
I'm not saying that this version is better than the orginal, but i feel the meaning of the song just shines right trough.
not that it's a bad cover, I just don't like it. thats just what happens when a floyd fan listens to a band he doesn't even like cover a masterpiece.
there's only one band i want to hear play pink floyd songs
@hupajupa The reason it ends "just like that" is because there's no break between Us and Them and Any Color You Like; it's all kind of one song. It's the same way on the Pink Floyd original. The MP3 included in this video was just ONLY the Us and Them one.
I love this cover but theres two things i really hate about it:
It stays soft the whole time
It just ends like thatD:
@VAWStudios Flaming Lips did something interesting, albeit it sounds pretty crappy compared to the original masterpiece but nobody expected anyone to recreate something so... perfect.
miserably
covering Dark side of the Moon? a daunting feat id'e say. However the flaming Lips seem to have...failed.
whats the name of album? wanna get it
Fantastic version of my favourite Pink Floyd tune!
Lovin' this shit.
Dang, there's something about the lyrics that i just love. They just sound so human in their imperfection, vulnerable almost. I never heard of the flaming lips before but based on this cover i'd say there hella creative.
@somesmartindividual Poor man's Neil Young.
Damn, those vocals are.... not good.
these guys are definently the pink floyd for this generation.
Well I mean, they're gonna kill ya, so like, if you give 'em a quick sh...short, sharp shock, they don't do it again. Dig it? I mean he got off light, 'cause I coulda given 'im a thrashin', I only hit him once. It's only the difference between right and wrong innit? I mean good manners don't cost nothing do they, eh?
sorry, but i have to go listen to the original before i curl into the fetal position, cry, and rock back and forth....
I can appreciate a good cover but one i just stupid its just a silent bum bum bum and the lyrics. So DUMB!
la amo en la voz de wayne coyne
okay, this is much better than the breathe cover. sort of redeems this but i still prefer the original.
la amo
yo te amo
@tbarrettl Absolutely. This "rendition" is a joke.
Very nice indeed
@sockpuppetmartinez exactly what i thought... why the hell i'd want to listen that crap? It's the pf version played worse.
This is a reinterpretation... and a wonderful one while we're at it.
Awesome
Try the Between the Buried and Me cover, it is far better.
Listening it too ti more and I like it more. Sweet song!
Probably my fave off PF's album. This sounds nice as well.
