Flack, Roberta - Suzanne Lyrics

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

It's great but I don't agree with her interpretation that Suzanne is a narcissist.

    She was Canadian I think.

Flacks performance here is beyond sublime. Lol, I can see Roberta's take on the song triggered a few people who love the woman as goddess muse angle but chances are Flack probably knew Suzanne Verdal - maybe that had something to do with her hot take. After the song made Cohen famous he tried to bang Verdal when she was single ... and she said no! God, that must have stung lol. Guess the song just wasn't good enough ...

  25. P.... S....

Amazing song and amazingly done. Tears.

  26. M.... i....

Roberta Flack is just beautiful here. But my favorite version is Dianne Reeve's. It is jazzy, ethereal and adds even more depth to this lovely haunting song. https://youtu.be/eOVqly0s1No

  27. S.... B....

Have to agree with Nicole Gibb, two years ago. I never heard Suzanne described as self-absorbed and callous...

  28. G.... S....

A lady of class!!  Saw her perform in the summer of 1975 at red rocks amphitheater near Denver.  She captivated us!!! We were like putty in her hands.  Her soothing and lush voice just filled that place with so much love and serenity!!!  It was a night I will always cherish.

Roberta Flack is such an amazing talent. Cohen's 'Suzanne' is one of my favorite recordings by Ms. Flack. I listen to it often. My favorite song by her is 'The First Time..." and I believe Ms. Flack's rendition is one of the most beautiful love songs ever recorded. She does not fit into one kind of genre of music: she isn't pop, adult contemporary, r&b, soul, jazz...but she is all of these. I love that. I have so much love and respect for her.
    Thank you, Miss Roberta Flack

  43. M.... D....

    love love love her!!!

  44. T.... I....

    FLAWLESS!
Thank you for sharing it :)

  45. A.... M....

Wow, this live version is gorgeous! I prefer it over the studio version that is available .... The musicians are adding a very deep funky element here, and Roberta sounds like she is really feeling it! I wish they would make this available as a recording. I saw that the video itself is available though.

    A.... M....

    teknoid l))l

  46. g.... h....

    beautiful version

    thanks H.

  47. p.... k....

    Beautiful song!

  48. P.... B....

one of my favorite Leonard Cohen's songs alongside (priests)thanks,R.I.P.Leonard

  49. N.... G....

RIP Leonard Cohen. I never knew there were some many people who covered this song.
All due respect to Mz Flack, Suzanne isn't looking in the mirror, she is holding for the children seeking love, so they can see themselves and in turn, love themselves.

  50. L.... R....

No one brings this song to LIFE quite like Roberta Flack.  Sadly, the songwriter has left the building. There are but a handful of scribes who carved these sad-lovely ideas of being a writer into my psyche. Leonard Cohen was one of them. T'is true, I hardly knew ye. And yet I feel this urgent need to say: THANK YOU, Lenny. lmr

    L.... R....

I hope you have a chance to visit his home of Montreal. You'll see and hear and feel the deep currents that fed his creativity. He was, of course, a great individual, but that city is one of the world's great artistic cauldrons. I had the experience of landlords offering me reduced rent as a musician.

  51. m.... ....

My favourite version ( maybe equals with Nina's!)

    m.... ....

    Agreed!

  52. a.... s....

    ...and you wanna travel blind

  53. T.... R....

    Breathtaking....

  54. E.... L....

This is wonderful. Free. Wonderful god energy.

  55. D.... B....

    This is PERFECTION

  56. v.... ....

The BEST rendition of this tune.......LOVE her!!

  57. B.... S....

Best version EVER, but she sure understands differently than I do.

  58. E.... R....

I have never seen her sing this live and this is among my favorites of her recordings. THANK YOU for posting. What year?

    E.... R....

must have been in the eighties shot in Edmonton Canada for a TV show

    E.... R....

@H. Memo Rhein Edmonton? Wow. But no way it's the 80s, it's the 70s for sure.

  59. S.... ....

I met Roberta in the late 60's when she was playing upstairs at Mr. Henry's in D.C. We sat at long tables on benches and it was very intimate. Before singing each song, she would sit quietly at the piano until the room quieted. It was magic. I went to a party thrown by Robert Shirley (the manager at Mr. Henry's) that Roberta attended and we sat and talked. She said that a young lady had come to Mr. Henry's and heard her sing and went right back to her father, who was a record producer, and told him he had to sign her right away and she had just signed. Almost everything she sang at the club has been recorded but I will always remember sitting in that small room at the club, listening to her pure voice during that magical time.

    S.... ....

Thanks for sharing that magical time with us. This is the most incredible arrangement of the song Suzanne I've ever heard.....Roberta is a true Artist!

    S.... ....

"Pure"is the perfect description her pipes:ntocned, celestial, translucent, the Waterford of vocals

    S.... ....

Sharper4949 WOW, what great memories you must have.

    S.... ....

Those are the kinds of stories I cherish. Thank you!

    S.... ....

Wow..great that you heard her so early in her career...she's so special.

  60. A.... C....

    Lindaaaa!!

  61. W.... W....

Ahh... Mrs Roberta and Mr Cohen meet again.. would you feed me tea and oranges?

    W.... W....

what else did she sing of Cohen's?

    W.... W....

+David Snow - Hey, that's no way to say goodbye. xx

    W.... W....

    Danny boy

  62. M.... S....

    Wooo! I love RF! :-)

  63. S.... K....

wonderful - najlepsza wersja suzanne kiedykolwiek

  64. u.... ....

Mrs. Flack is the vocal Boss-tress. Nuff said.

  65. S.... ....

I don't agree with her explanation.

  66. k.... ....

This song is so much deeper than her explanation, but she sings it and plays so beautifully, I'm not even mad at her for not understanding her song. Truly a timeless beauty.

  67. C.... ....

Um, no. Love you Roberta, but that's not what this song is about.

  68. t.... ....

I've been a Roberta Flack since the 70's. Grammy Song of the Year winner 2 years in-a-row. Only U2 has that same distinction. Did you know she entered Howard University at age 15? Like Al Jarreau, she spent years teaching. Who says, "Those, who can't do, teach." HA!

  69. T.... m....

    oh my...ty so much...

  70. c.... ....

wonderful - best suzanne version ever

  71. T.... ....

This is one of the songs I remember that made me first fall in love with Roberta! And even today it still works its magic. Thank you, Roberta!!
